2024 NHL Entry Draft

Recommended Posts

Scott Wheeler ranked the Habs’ drafting (relative to position) as the best for the day:

Quote

I can’t think of a better outcome for the Habs. We know where their young group of defensemen is at. Now, they’ve added two of the best forwards in the draft, one of whom is an elite skill guy and one of whom is a center with length, skating (Hage is one of the best skaters in the draft), skill (he gets high grades in this class here, too) and a profile that I love.

I believe that Demidov is the second-best prospect in the draft and is a home run for the Habs. A true game-breaker is the one thing it felt like their core was missing — the kind of player who can challenge for 90 to 100 points if things break right. There’s no guarantee that he will become that, but I see that kind of upside and he feels like a 70-to-80-point player at his floor. I think he’s going to make magic happen in the NHL and thrill one of the most passionate fan bases in professional sports. It’ll be great for the league.

And Hage might be my favorite prospect in the draft. I think he’s got a legitimate path to a long career as a top-six player. I comped him to Jordan Kyrou and I think that’s within reach.

This is a big day in the Habs’ rebuild and they had the best Day 1 of the bunch. One to remember.

That's great to hear. It was a good day for the Habs and Habs fans. The more I read about Hage the more I like him. Likely wouldn't have got him at 26, good job by Hughes moving up.

Habs dont pick till 70, barring trade.

i see at least 25-30 names left of intriguing kids;

Basha, Badinka, Hutson, Richie, Mews, Mustard, Misa, Stiga, Elick, Masse, Howe,...

Chernyshov, Pulkkinen, Wallenius, Freij, Miettinen, Kiviharju...

Moving up; Minnesota wanted Buium for sure and i think Hughes said he wanted Hage (Would he of passed on Eiserman?)

2024 NHL Draft: Best players available on Day 2 - Habs Eyes on the Prize

"Six players remaining had a first-round grade in our consensus rankings. The top player on the board is forward Igor Chernyshov, who was ranked 18th. The other players in the top-32 are forwards Nikita Artamonov (25), Andrew Basha (27), Ryder Ritchie (28), and defenders Alfons Freij (31) and Dominik Badinka (32)."

Hughes said he wanted Hage but every GM says that they wanted the player they picked.  They never admit they wanted someone else.

Im sure they are happy with Hage.

More telling though is that it was reported on twitter the Habs had one jersey on their table and moved it underneath the table and grabbed a different one when Eiserman got taken.

I think if that's true, the first jersey was Eiserman and the second was Hage.

I mentioned that in the thread.

That is exactly what happened as I was watching the table from my seat.

Gotta give McCagg credit for his draft analysis. He was name dropping Demidov before the Michkov draft. Third year in a row calling the Habs pick. Was right about Senneke rising late as well. He's obviously well connected with scouts.

Name dropping Demidov as a top prospect isn't hard.  Lots of people can name drop who will be the top prospects in 2025 today too.  Heck 2026 top 5s can be name dropped two years out.  Positions will change and people will rise and fall, but the names are out there.

The other stuff I do give him credit for.

He said Michkov wasn't even the best prospect in Russia (in reference to Demidov) a few months before last year's draft. Hopefully he's right about that one!

In fact, I think Beck will end up a fourth line centre or maybe a third. Partly due to Hage leapfrogging him in short order and becoming a three or two Centre.

We shall see ... we have Suzuki and (hopefully) Dach as 1A/1B, and then we have additional possibilities for 3/4 in Newhook, Evans (for now), Beck, Kapanen and now Hage. Not all of them will make that, and some may end up on the wing, but I'm not really concerned about C depth--as long as Dach is OK this coming season.

It's not hard to know who the top prospects are one year out.

Gavin McKenna is probably as good or better than Macklin Celebrini.

Anyone worth their salt in scouting knows these names.

Again the other stuff he gets full credit for.... but I was in a mock draft with like 20 guys this week and I guarantee you every single one of them could name the 2025 top prospects.

Just now, Peter Puck said:

Wow.  Sergachev traded to get a pick to choose Cole Hudson.  Didn't see that coming.

They're not related, the announcement just came before that pick.  The Hutson pick was acquired from Buffalo for Beck Malenstyn.

Oh that makes more sense.  My bad.  Thanks for the correction.

Booo?

Have you ever even watched him play, a single time?

I love when people have strong opinions on players they have never even seen play.

Only seen Sawyer at the WJAC and he looked good there... creative playmaker and good speed and work ethic were my notes.   But didn't see his BCHL/AJHL footage.

He's joining Providence in the NCAA next year.

Mateiko goes at 90.  I thought someone might take a flyer on him in the late 2nd; I had brought him up at 57 in the HW mock but we dropped him to 70.

Owen Protz a LHD who is more defensive than offensive minded.  He's only 6'0" but is very, very physical, I've seen him throw some huge hits.  The offence is somewhat limited in the OHL, so I don't expect it to develop, but you need to play in your own end too.

His ice time went up by nearly 10 minutes a game after a midseason trade.  I suspect they're expecting a pretty good jump from him next year.

Yeah, I just don't know if the offence will ever really be there at the pros, might score a bit more in the OHL.  His main asset is the physical defensive presence.
