His main asset is the physical defensive presence. We're starting to see physicality become a bit more important and he profiles as an old-school third-pairing guy. That's not bad at this stage. But I'm curious to see how much the offence will go up with a full season in a more prominent role though I agree, that's not going to be his calling card. Yes, you need some physicality on the D and its a fourth round pick. I'd have preferred a RHD given our pool, but again, fourth round and I don't know that there is a RHD of this caliber here so I'm fine taking the BPA and figuring it out later. dlbalr
Pick 130 - Tyler Thorpe, a big right winger.
Commandant
Tyler Thorpe. HUGE.... 6'5" is the first thing that stands out. He gets to the net and uses every inch of his size to screen goalies and cause havoc. Decent hands for deflections and pouncing on rebounds. Further out, he's got a good shot. He will hit, but I'd like to see him use his size even more. dlbalr
Pick 134 - Mikus Vecvanags, a Latvian goalie
Commandant
Mikus Vecvanags He's a goalie... Goalies are voodoo.
dlbalr
HW has six scouting magazines and I have half a dozen or so other rankings page bookmarked. Not a single one of them has anything about this goalie.

Commandant
Ben Merrill Sorry guys, got nothing on this one.... US High School system, hard to get tape.... Big Forward is all I know.

dlbalr
Pick 210 - RW Makar Khanin
Commandant
Makar Khanin. Talented playmaking winger who took a step forward after not being drafted in 2023. He has skill but plays a bit too much on the perimeter for my liking. Still a good gamble in round 7.
dlbalr
Pick 224 - D Rasmus Bergqvist
Commandant
Rasmus Bergvist another player who was skipped over in 2023. Defensive defenceman with decent skating and positioning. Can make a good first pass and start the breakout but doesn't get too involved in the offence. Left Hand D.
dlbalr
Interesting - sounds like there's an agreement in place for Blainville-Boisbriand to draft Vecvanags in the upcoming Import Draft and he's expected to play for them next season.

Not a single one of them has anything about this goalie. He played a bit everywhere this past season: Latvian league, Latvian second-tier, Finnish U18, Finnish U18 second-tier, plus the U18 world championship. The previous two seasons he mostly played in Swedish U16 and U18. Really difficult to find even complete stats at that level, though! I did find his Latvian league stats here: https://lhf.lv/lv/subtournament/549 I did find the game results for the second half of the Finnish U18 season: https://tulospalvelu.leijonat.fi/serie/?season=2024&lid=81&did=9&stgid=4458&lang=fi&page=sarjataulukko But all you can really get out of these are a few stats. I assume the Habs' scouts saw the kid playing either in Finland or Latvia and decided to give him a shot.

Sir_Boagalott
The Goalie pick seems interesting, but not sure why they picked him. The Habs went to town last year picking 3 G's and 2 of them seem to be top G prospect's that are not in the NHL or AHL. Plus, they recently picked up Connor Hughes, and its not like Monty or Primeau suck either. It sounds crazy that's he's 6'3" but only 159 lbs. i.e. he's got 7" on me yet he weighs the same amount. If he becomes an NHLer it seems like he'll have a hell of time trying to prevent players from pushing him into his own net. I definitely like the size of numerous of the other picks. That's exactly what I've wanted to see the Habs do for years. Height is an advantage and so is strength and they picked up several guys with the right size and weight this draft. i.e. other than Florian and Tuch their prospect pool are basically all 6' and under 200 lbs so in that sense they are almost all the same. The guys they drafted late this year are unarguably different.

Kind of stood out to me. I’ve never seen that word used before to describe a tough player. Ya, thats an odd yet great explanation of his style: Quote When Protz steps on the ice, he holds a monopoly on violence – smart violence. He steadily angles attackers to the outside, lining them for a bone-crushing hit. He eliminates the attacker’s options on the cycle, then slams them to the ice. He’ll shut down rushes, move the puck, and activate in the offensive zone. -EliteProspects 2024 NHL Draft Guide I cant help but wonder if their plan is to eventually pair him with Sobolev? Quote He picks up checks early in defensive sequences, boxes them out from high-danger areas, and pinches on them hard in the neutral-zone as they receive passes, knocking the puck away. There is a physical element to Sobolev’s game, but it’s his overall engagement in the game that defines him. -EliteProspects 2021 NHL Draft Guide They are both 6'1" 215+ lbs and seem to have the same physical style of play and they also sound like they could have somewhat similar qualities as Savard. They could be a great 3rd pairing. Quote A defensive defenseman, David Savard is a hard guy to play against. Competes, strong along the boards and comes often as a winner out of the most battles. Stands his ground and is hard to knock off balance. Savard is a shot-blocking machine and will sacrifice his body in order to help the team. I hope they both block a lot of shots too. Commandant
Sobolev? We aren't even going to keep him, he's a failed prospect who will walk on June 1st next year. sometimes a guy just doesn't develop and doesn't earn one of the 50 contract spots. Given our prospects, I see no way this guy is signed.
