Habs sign Connor Hughes

Recommended Posts

I like this signing.  It is a mix of the best first name in the game (McDavid + Bedard)  and the best last name in the game (Jack, Quinn, Luke).

Don't like that whiff of nepotism.

Sorry, was 100% kidding.

He's 27, this is a Kasmir Kaskisuo replacement more than anything with a plan to have him be part of the big team.

He's a veteran with pro level experience (in Switzerland) to team with Dobes in the AHL.  Also if one of Primeau/Monty get hurt, he can get called up and sit on the bench, while they leave Dobes in the AHL to actually play games and don't interrupt his development.

Also, an interview with Hughes (link below).  Apparently the Habs reached out during the Swiss League finals to indicate they were interested and had one of their scouts meet with him.  Then, a couple of weeks ago, they said they wanted to sign him and the deal came together fairly quickly after that.  He also mentioned his goalie coach was former Hab Cristobal Huet.

Marc-André Godin has a good article on Huges. He makes the parallel to Hut who he talked to for his article

Apparently, he was also coached by another ex-Habs alumni David Aebischer.

Hughes did great in the Suis league this year so it seems to be an interesting singing with potentially high reward.  Hughes is the same age Huet was when he left that league.  How long did Huet take to make the NHL when he came over?  Can Hughes possibly replicate that?

In the next few years the Habs could have quite the goalie competition going on.

I'll be happy if he can be effective in Laval and share his pro experience with Dobes this season
