Habs aren’t going to be after this guy but I’m curious about his value

He's been available since Saros resigned.  The asking price supposedly a top-5 pick at the draft.  Elliot Friedman is reporting the current asking price is an established NHL player or a high ceiling forward or defence.

Why would the Sharks do this?

Maybe Grier thinks Ceci can help the Sharks D for a year? Perhaps not all GM's think Ceci is as bad as many here think he is. The Sharks should be much improved, added some good veterans plus Will Smith and Celebrini should be fun to watch.

For the right price, the Habs should be interested.

I expect a fairly high price for sure.

Habs have a growing and underrated Montembault and a super promising Fowler.

If Hughes is ready to spend big on a trade then I hope it’s for a forward

Montembault is an OK starter.  Fowler has potential but goalie prospects are voodoo, and Askarov is just at another level.

Askarov has the potential to be a future vezina winner.  He solves a lot of problems if he develops as expected.

Yeah so Demidov for Askarov…

No thanks

Didn't realize that he was at that level. You’re talking about Price level goalie

Potential for Vezina, yes. But goalies are voodoo, so no guarantees.

That's a big "IF" and as you have said and I agree goalies are voodoo. He hasn't proven anything at the NHL level yet.

Would you move Primeau plus that infamous Calgary 1st?

Mailloux and Primeau might get Trotz' attention ... but I doubt the Preds are looking for draft picks.

If goalies are voodoo, how do we know which one of them has future Vezina potential? 🤔 Can't have it both ways.

EDM pulled off some pretty slick moves to save the ship. I don't really get what either Vancouver or San Jose were thinking. In fact, I almost wonder if they regard the offer sheets as dirty pool and therefore went easy on that POS Bowman in order to make a statement about offer sheets.

Apparently the original Predators ask was a top-five draft pick, so it seems that picks are acceptable.

Askarov was an 11th overall pick for a reason, and since being drafted has dominated at every level including the AHL.  There are of course no guarantees, but some prospects are better bets than others.

The comparison was made to Carey Price, and I think that's fair for pedigree at the same age.  Of course Price would have his struggles in the NHL before becoming an elite goalie and it could have gone downhill in 2010 and he may never have reached the level he did.... that's all possible here too, but if Askarov hits his potential, it is that level.

The reason goalies are voodoo is that they develop later than defencemen and forwards.  You draft them at 18, but never know how they will develop between 18-25.  And while there is still room to go, Askarov has the pedigree you want, the athleticism you want, was darn good at 18, and now, 4 years later at age 22, has had four years of exceptional development where he's hit every milestone you'd want to see.

That was the 2023 draft though (Reinbacher not Demidov)..... the GM has changed since that ask, as has the Predators recent spending spree putting them in Win Now mode and not rebuilding mode.  We are a full 14 months since that ask and the situation in Nashville has certainly changed... through a few things, 2023-24 was better than expected for them, Saros has re-signed to a long term deal, and the team spent approximately a billion dollars on July 1st.

I'm talking about Price level prospect, yes.

That's not a guarantee of a Price level career of course.

They get a third-round pick for a guy they claimed off waivers and a chance to try to do a 'pump and dump' on Ceci.  He'll get a chance to put up some better numbers in San Jose which they'll hope will give him some standalone value closer to the trade deadline.

I recall that being the rumour at the 2023 draft, which was (technically) before Trotz took over as GM July 1, 2023 and definitely before he went all in and spent $111.5M in free agency this summer.

NOTE: I hadn't read Commandant's post (above) when I posted this.

Makes sense. And even though GMs have 800 games of Ceci, no doubt some GM will be dumb enough to think that somehow Ceci has "found another level" at age 30 🙄

I don't think any GM is expecting Ceci to "find another level". It is possible however that some GM's think that Ceci is better than some of the armchair quarterback's on this board think he is.

LeBrun reported Nashville was asking to move into the top-5 in last year's draft as well.
