Habs Fan in Edmonton Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 The Oilers GM has done a fantastic job this summer getting some great deals and getting some key guys resigned. However they still have to sign Broberg and Holloway. I really think Broberg can be a stud defensemen in the NHL. If a team offered Broberg a 6 year, 4.1M/year contract what would the Oilers do? The compensation would be a 2nd round pick which is minor for a player of Broberg's ability. I know the Habs wouldn't be the team making an offer as they don't need a young defensemen and likely a lot of teams might be afraid to do it but an offer like that would really mess with the Oilers and provide a great opportunity for a team with cap space if they wanted to build their defense. In that case there's not a whole lot Edmonton can do. They can't match, as it's over the allowable cap overage, so the only other option is to panic trade about $4m of cap just to match and still have to deal with clearing about $2m more just to be cap compliant without Holloway signed. The compensation would be a 1st and 3rd round pick. The compensation formula is (Total value of contract) divided by (years to a maximum of 5) So your contract would have an aav of 4.1 for cap purposes, but for rfa compensation is 4.92. Quote

Thanks for the clarification. So if they offered a 5 year deal at 4.1M then it would only be a 2nd round pick? Quote

A 2nd round pick seems stupidly cheap compensation for 6' 3", 200 lb. defensemen who is a terrific skater, just turned 23 and is perhaps on the verge of breaking out. I think his play in the playoffs had to have teams thinking about an offer sheet. I think a lot of teams don't want to start a war like MB did but I think this is one of the best RFA opportunities I have seen for a while. Quote

The issue is the Oilers will match like Carolina did with Aho. 4.1 isn't a number they can't absorb. There are rumours that Kane is going to be LTIR'd and even if not, they could likely match the offer sheet and move him. Quote

I am not looking at the 2nd round pick as a problem as I am looking at this from the point of view of the team making the offer, it is a wonderful opportunity for the team brave enough to make the offer. The problem with Kane is the uncertainty with his health, whether they can put him on LTIR is something they likely won't know for a while. He will be difficult to move if they can't put him on LTIR as teams won't want to take on his baggage and salary without serious sweeteners especially as it's for 2 more years. An offer sheet causes all kinds of problems for the Oilers as they can't afford to lose Broberg right now but they also can't absorb the potential salary without some magic but maybe Jackson has some magic left. It seems like Kane's a safe bet to land on LTIR. How long he'll be on there for is in some question. There's some speculation that Ceci could move at some point, freeing up the flexibility to sign Broberg and make it a bit easier to work Holloway in as well. Quote

I dont think it would be that hard to move Kane. Yeah theyd have to attach a pick or something but thats something a team in their position can do Quote

Dalhabs Posted July 15, 2024 Posted July 15, 2024 Maybe they learned from Bergevin that the payback for offersheeting can be hard. Quote

If you look at the offer sheet in isolation, I'd rather have the first-round pick (without that Dvorak trade) than Kotkaniemi. That turned out to be a disaster of a season anyway, and, in retrospect, missing a centre wouldn't have made it any worse. Quote

It's a challenge for GMs with the salary cap and I don't think GMs like to be seen as taking advantage of others in RFA situations. Teams don't forget. But if some GM doesn't mind being a prick, a 2nd round pick is cheap for Broberg. The Oilers would probably match but it would cause them a lot of grief (ie. overpaying for Broberg and overpaying to get rid of Kane). However I don't think it will happen. Quote
