How has xhekaj been playing?

I have not watched the road games as they are not broadcast where I am. But from what is reported he is playing well centering the 4th line: the coach said last game that that line brings an element of intimidation that keeps the other team in check.

"...Finally, Logan Mailloux made a cross-ice pass to Alex Barré-Boulet who fired the puck past Houser to give Laval their first lead of the game, 2-1."

"Laval moves to 10-2-0 on the season, and are in top spot in the North Division. Their road trip continues in Syracuse on Friday night before returning to Rochester on Saturday."

I'm really excited with the success of the Rocket. It is the first time in close to 20 years that a Canadiens farm team has been having this kind of a season. (probably longer - they won the AHL title with Sherbrooke - mostly with Carey Price standing on his head - the team not so much) I don't think it can be overstated that the way forward for any team in the NHL is to have a successful farm system. Young players have to be brought through a system where the team is a winning one, and they can build their game while playing with confidence. I watched it for years here in Halifax with the NS Voyageurs', when the young fella's got called up they were ready to contribute. This IS THE WAY to progress!

Welcome maritimer.

Price played for the Hamilton Bulldogs.

They also used to play at the University i was attending in Fredericton for bunch of years in the 90s, but we didnt go see many games.

It was Hamilton, not Sherbrooke who won the Calder Cup with Price.

Hamilton also had a number of successful seasons after that, making the conference finals and other strong years.

A winning Farm Team does not mean that you are developing prospects though.  The Hershey Bears and Chicago Wolves have been very successful AHL teams in the last 20 years, and neither of them were focused on developing.  The AHL is a league where many journeymen vets (see Alex Barre-Boulet on this team) can dominate and lots of 20 year olds struggle.  The nice thing on this Laval team is that guys like Mailloux, Beck, Roy, Dobes... are key parts of winning.  But I don't judge prospect development by an AHL teams wins and losses.... that's just not accurate in recent history overall.

I am also excited to see how well the Laval Rocket is doing.

They have a couple of AHL veterans like Condotta and Bare-Boulet down there but the focus from coaching seems to provide a solid environment to learn how to win as a team.

I hope HughGort does not pick appart the AHL team by calling up prospects to sit or to play bottom line/pair minutes

Yes - indeed Hamilton. The memory isn't what it was - haha. I do agree with you that AHL team success doesn't necessarily translate to prospect development - but it certainly can and has. With the Voyageurs that I've previously mentioned Montreal always had some wiley veterans to lead the way. While many call for youngsters such as Roy et all to be called up right away is a mistake in my opinion. Let them continue to build their game, and confidence is all I'm saying. It is the first time in years though that we have had so many young prospects enjoying success at the AHL level, and that can only be a good thing.

At very least not Laval Top 6 to play NHL 4th line minutes ... which had been the practice under past regimes.

I would rather say that the common coaching wisdom is to have the prospects start in the bottom 6 and claw their way up unless they are “hot” at the moment.

That is how Galchenyuk and Gallagher win their spots, Mete and a ones or twosies every season

I do not follow other teams much, but I think that top prospects in other teams have sat or being used in bottom-6 lines in the near past… Michkov? Others?

I would differentiate between rookies entering the NHL and call-ups, which is what I was referring to ... also between "bottom 6" and the 4th line, which is what I specified.

Well, I am busy at work and that is the best I could come up with.

Go Rocket Go!

Not all prospects are the same.... not all follow the same path.

You can't compare Michkov (a top 10 pick) to Josh Roy (a 5th rounder), they are not the same and of course teams have different paths for different players.
