I guess can kinda say, 29th place is where these guys predict Habs to finish.

Interesting piece on UFAs. We suck at FW and don’t have a ton of up-and-comers banging on the door, so I don’t know why we wouldn’t take a swing at at least one these names. Personally, I’m down with MaxPac, if he wants to return; nothing run with adding a veteran leader with possible upside on a cheap deal. There seems to be a bit of chatter about Sprong, though. I wonder if the Habs have been kicking tires on him.

I think there is a reason Sprong is still available and has already played on 5 NHL teams. Apparently his attention to the defensive side of the game is lacking somewhat. That might not endear him to Marty. I think they will pass BUT on a cheap deal you never know. He has scored 39 goals the past 2 seasons.

I'm not a big Sprong fan but this is a team that needs more firepower.  He doesn't bring much else but he does bring that.  I don't think he's on Montreal's radar but I'd take a flyer on him.

For Pacioretty, something like the deal that Ryan Suter just signed with St. Louis was what I was hinting at in the column.  A low base salary with some achievable bonuses, most of which will be hit by the trade deadline so that if he wanted to take a final shot at a Cup title, he'd be easier for teams to afford.  (He turned down a chance to do that last season so my scenario is hardly a given to happen.)

"3. Kent Hughes
In Montreal, it’s hard to be underrated since every move, every detail of the franchise, is amplified. Kent Hughes is doing a great job with the rebuild and everyone knows that. The moves he’s made have put the Montreal Canadiens on track to compete sooner rather than later. Yet, it seems like Hughes doesn’t get enough credit for how well things have gone in his tenure."...

I definitely agree with that assessment. He is doing a great job. Piece by piece Hughes is getting it done

Hope he has nice rookie year in Laval.

Stu Cowan: Canadiens think prospect Florian Xhekaj could be special | Montreal Gazette

Top 100 drafted NHL prospects ranking: Celebrini, Michkov lead Wheeler’s summer 2024 list - The Athletic (nytimes.com)

"The San Jose Sharks, Columbus Blue Jackets and Montreal Canadiens lead the way with six ranked prospects, followed by the Washington Capitals, Detroit Red Wings, Utah Hockey Club, Seattle Kraken, Chicago Blackhawks, St. Louis Blues, Winnipeg Jets and Anaheim Ducks with five apiece. One team doesn’t have a prospect on the list: the Florida Panthers (the Edmonton Oilers didn’t until they traded for Matt Savoie)."

Among the final cuts on D were Luca Cagnoni (SJS), Leo Sahlin Wallenius (SJS), Ethan Del Mastro (CHI), Ryker Evans (SEA), Jayden Struble (MTL), E.J. Emery (NYR), Cole Hutson (WSH) and others."

It is a decent question and I agree that it's way too early to tell what his ceiling is, 8 years is out of the question. He needs a couple years to prove what he can do. I predict he signs a 2 maybe 3 year deal with an AAV of around 1.75M per year. Just guessing here.

Last year Jordan Harris signed for 2 years with a 1.4 AAV

With a bigger cap and that Arber has some unique traits.... 2 x 1.75 seems fair.

I say the Ducks likely will give him $3/yr, sound about right?

I think the Habs will match at $3 contract. Not sure if Xhekaj would sign - I think he was making more at Costco😁

Assuming you mean $3M as $3 is below the NHL minimum.

Taking their time if that is their plan ...  what would you expect the term to be?

One Xhekaj is traded to the Ducks, who cares what his contract is.

Since you didn't mention a trade, I assumed you meant the Ducks would give him an offer sheet.

I know, kind of kidding.

But Xhekaj likely has more value in other GMs eyes in trade, than a Barron, Harris, Struble and is a LH-d so kinda expendable. Is my thinking.

Newhook was noted to be just 26 days older than Caufield and name on cup already.

Canadiens' Alex Newhook Looking To Achieve Bigger Things With Montreal In 2024-25 - The Hockey News

"Much of the optimism surrounding Newhook is due to the fact that in his final 13 games of the season, he posted five goals and 12 points. Almost as importantly, Gallagher notched five goals and 11 points, while Armia, who was twice sent to the minors this season, scored six goals and nine points to finish with a career-high 17 goals."

If we had Dach, Roy and player-to-be-acquired on the second line, Newhook-Armia-Gallagher would actually be a very nice third line. An expensive one, yes, but can't change that.

I don't think there is any question he has more value in other GM's eyes than a Barron, Harris or Struble because he has a unique skillset. I don't view Arber as expendable because I want to see what his ceiling is before I make any decisions. Of course if Hughes gets an offer that exceeds expectations than he has some thinking to do but I don't think Arber is going anywhere in the short term.
