No... best case scenario is Florida misses the playoffs and Calgary is picking 2nd overall

If Florida makes the playoffs, then Calgary holding the 11th pick post-lottery is the best-case scenario.  If Florida misses the playoffs, Montreal gets Calgary's pick if it's from 2-32.

Thanks folks this is confusing

Actually it clearer for me now than it's ever been. It's pretty simple, if Florida sucks (misses the playoffs, we want Calgary to suck). If Florida doesn't suck (makes the playoffs, we just want the Flames to be mediocre (not bottom 10, 11 is perfect post lottery), dlblair and commandant described it perfectly in one sentence. I thought I had it figured out before but forgot about the terms for the Florida pick transferring over to Calgary.

Yes, that is the absolute best case. That would be wonderful.

Actually the absolute best case is Florida misses the playoffs and Calgary gets the 1st pick overall and then Calgary gets the first overall again in 2026.    If that happens we get the #1 pick in 2026.

That is true, but I would very happily settle for the #2 pick overall this year.

If its transferred to 2026 they no longer have first overall protection.  It could be 1st.

2024 World Junior Summer Showcase: Who stood out on Day 4 - Daily Faceoff

#11 Aatos Koivu, C (Montreal Canadiens): After a couple quieter games earlier in the tournament, this felt like Koivu’s best game. He had some good looks before eventually getting rewarded late in the game after his shot hit off Joona Saarelainen and in. Koivu can be hit or miss internationally but he seemed a lot more engaged today.

If the Habs are drafting bottom 5 in 2026 then the rebuild is certainly a bit off the rails.

Not if the pick comes from another team.

Very good point indeed. Isn't it nice to dream about Calgary and Florida really sucking next year and both missing the playoffs?

They will finish 9th in the East but win the lottery.
