Caution of course that its just a rookie game and no telling that will translate to NHL.

I watched the first and caught the end of the 3rd/OT/shootout ... with the highlighted context, none of our top players impressed me as much as I would have hoped.

I caught the last half of the third.  Hutson looked like he lost a couple of foot races I would of expected him to win.  Was that pretty normal all game long, or was it just the 3rd?

2 things

1) you'd have to know if he was at the end of a shift and the other player was at the start or what the situation is.

2) What makes Hutson's skating so great isn't the 200-foot race.  That's something that rarely happens in a game anyway compared to his lateral agility and edgewok and the fact he can get around a man in a one on one situation. Its like Subban.  He was never the fastest player, but his changes of direction and his side to side movement is what is the real elite factor.

I know you guys have had disagreements before and I should probably stay out of it but I really enjoy these boards, especially now with the excitement of training camp upon us as there is a lot to discuss so I hope you can move forward. I didn't think Commandant's reply was condescending at all, just providing some additional context. Cheers

I watched more of the highlights and I thought Adam Engstrom was really really good. He has major league mobility and is so smooth out there. He probably has to work on his defensive game a bit like most young defensemen but I definitely see him making the club in the future although the left side is a little crowded.

Adam Engstrom looked good IMO

Knowing injuries will always crop up and most teams need to dress bout 9-10 different d-men in a season.

If he looks much better than Trudeau in Laval, maybe getting paired with Reinbacher/Mailloux there, would be a plus?

Don't know. What time is the game?

Same 1pm EST, i assume.

I dont get RDS anyways and just watch youtube version of game later on.

Canadiens' Engstrom steps out of the shadows in Prospect Showdown vs. Maple Leafs (sportsnet.ca)

“When you run a drill, as a coach, you want to see who understands. We don’t do a drill just to do a drill.” Vincent said. “Most of the time, except for shooting drills maybe, it’s component teaching, it’s a little piece of your game that you’re trying to teach, and [Engstrom] gets that really quick. Those little details—[for] some players, it takes a little bit more time, and it seems like with him, he’s getting that really quick.”

The hypocrisy is strong with this one.

Both of you, please stop responding. Now.

Lots of talk about the game today....

Let's stick to that hockey talk. I'd much like to hear impressions from someone who had a chance to watch today's game.

How did Mesar play?

Big thing is how he will do in Laval this season. But, safe to say that he hasnt stood out like Hutson has.

(again condensed replay of game on youtube if want to see how he looked)

"Yes, on Sunday, we felt he was a little more confident with the puck. His nice breakthrough between a few Maple Leafs players, at the entrance of the zone during the second period, is proof of that. However, in a competition with young people of his age, he should have been a little more visible."

Not quite satisfied with his weekend, Filip Mesar wants to do more | JDM (journaldemontreal.com)

Stu Cowan: Owen Beck focused on earning a spot with Canadiens | Montreal Gazette

And Beck impressed the coach anyways;

“First of all, I got the results from the (fitness) testing,” Vincent said after Sunday’s game when asked about Beck. “He’s way up there. His conditioning is off the chart. I think with his smarts, I think with his ability to skate — I think he can play centre or wing, I think he would have the ability to play at both positions. I think he’s in a good position right now. But he’s done the work. He’s in really good shape physically. Mentally he’s involved, he’s asking questions, he’s vocal. So I think he’s got a lot of things going on for him.”

On 32 thoughts, Friedman says a Habs player texted him saying the vets are amazed by what Hutson is doing in the captain's skates pre training camp and saying hes gonna win the calder.

That's great to hear, one thing for sure, he will be fun to watch.

If Guhle is planned partner for Matheson, seems like a Savard Hutson 2nd pairing is gonna happen.

See how next couple weeks play out 1st i guess.

I noticed Mailloux man's was left open for a goal yesterday, will be interesting how well he defends in pre-season.

Imagine he will start in Laval, given crowded d-core and wont want him platooning as 7th or 8th d-man.

I think so, too. Mailloux might be ready for the NHL but I think he'll need to wait for the trade deadline (Savard) or the inevitable D injury to get the call-up. In the meantime, he will benefit from the plethora of ice time in Laval.

Anybody have  thoughts on Tyler Thorpe? Could he be a diamond in the rough, certainly great size and a really good shot.  Big guys usually take longer to develop.

Slim chance long shot with poor skating, is 1st thought.

Love to see this; 238 to 230 to now 223lbs,
