The Chicoutimi Cucumber
Big picture, this was the same old same old: Caufield and Suzuki generate the only real offence Habs are substantially outplayed Defensive coverage is a mess Goaltending keeps us competitive Leafs lose, LOL Looks to be another long season. Two good things: Hutson. Yep yep yep The PP did pretty well. If special teams can pick up, that might move us out of the bottom 5 of the standings. Montembault, meanwhile...his rebound control has been better, but all the guy does is deliver. It won't be too much longer before people stop fretting and concede that, yes, he is a bona fide #1G. I would like Heineman to take Armia’s spot on the second line to take advantage of that shot. Armia has one of the best shots on the team. He's probably third behind Laine/Caufield in terms of power, Suzuki has a better release though. Reporters and players say he is a great shooter in practices. In games, he just doesn't use it enough. If Dach can set him up to shoot more, he might score even more than last year, and remember he scored a few after getting recalled last year. Commandant
Given the state of Canadian Goaltending, Montembault could (and I think should) be one of the 3 guys going to the 4 nations and Olympics.

I would have liked to see Dach generate a bit more tonight, myself. I noticed Newhook more. Random side note: I loved the Leafs' goalie's mask. Looked sharp. I think you give Armia a good 10 games with Dach to see if there is any chemistry there. You can't be making too many changes based on one game or players will be looking over their shoulder all the time, not good for confidence. I'd also like Dvorak out and Kapanan in and that's who I'd like to see on the second line, or even BB. But for god sake Marty - put Hutson on the first pp unit. Armia and Newhook had good chemistry last year, so lets hope he can get some with Dach too.

Armia scores a lot of his goals by snipe shot off the rush so I can see that. Shoot the puck Armia!
DON
Thought Dach did some good stuff and looked OK. 0 /4 on faceoff, but Habs were 12/36 overall.

The highest? 52 saves against Chicago on 13 November 1955--by the great Jacques Plante!
Commandant
And the NHL has even adjusted it now to 48 shots.
DON
Seemed Barron looked a bit overwhelmed again. Mikey had another egregious giveaway for golden scoring chance in front of own net, that Monty stopped. But, was 1st game so likely still some rust for lots of players. Who cares they beat the Leafs!, just 2 more games vs Leafs to go this year (1 in Nov and 1 in April).

Barron made me nervous every time he touched the puck in his own zone. Hutson, with his 2 NHL games of experience, looked far more competent in his own zone than Barron.
