Prime Minister Koivu
There are maybe 5 top forwards in the league who make over 6M. 3 years at 3M, 2.5M, 2M would be best. Or maybe a 2 year contract of 3M, 2.5M and then the year after resign him until the end of his career for a cheaper contract. I think that is okay. How about 2 years at 3 million with a team option at a third year?
simonus
I think that is okay. How about 2 years at 3 million with a team option at a third year? well... that would be perfect, but I doubt he'd sign it.
sbhatt
I don't think that the Habs can afford to pay Koivu any more than 3-3.5mil at the top end of whatever contract they offer him. There are too many other voids to be filled to invest too much into a guy who is realistically a #2 center. If they can get Koivu at 3, then have 4 or 5 left to offer for a real #1....the team would only need one solid stay-at-home no frills defenceman to be a serious threat. BTH
well... that would be perfect, but I doubt he'd sign it. Then don't sign him at all. If this guy is such a Captain then maybe he should take a bullet for the team and get paid ONLY 3 million dollars for a change? With the cap in place, every extra dollar who snatches is putting the team he "leads" in a worse position. He let his team down last night and if he's going to let his team down for 3 years by signing a big contract than he's no captain - he'd be the start of many of our problems. I constantly hear about "Koivu the Person" being so great. I'd love to see him be great but putting his team in a hole (just like he did last night) is low. I want to keep Koivu but he's gotta want to stay with us.
johnnyhasbeen
How can you be so ignorant? Koharski is from out East loser...and if your from Halifax, you should know he's from Nova Scotia. Don't be blaming Ontario for donut eating fat ass..... Sorry, I don't have the time some losers do to follow refs. Keep it up so I can be informed. He felt guilty about being injury prone and knew the team didnt want to invest 4-5 years in an injury prone player. He has been relatively healthy (knees arent much of an issue anymore) aside from a nagging groin injury that 20% of the players this year have had. He is not a greedy player who will sit out an entire year for 500,000. I think its time management repaid the guy for being so loyal his entire career. Sign him to a long term deal and let him retire a habs. Then offer him a front office job. "If he's such a captain"

These guys are overpaid. St Louis only makes 5.5M. That leaves 8 players. Big difference from my five now stop trying to be smart. At your other post: "He felt guilty about being injury prone and knew the team didnt want to invest 4-5 years in an injury prone player." How the heck do you know what Koivu is feeling and what he thinks? And like you said he knew the team didn't want to sign him long term. The team didn't want to. It's not that he wanted 1 year to make the team happy - it's that it's what the team wanted. "He is not a greedy player who will sit out an entire year for 500,000. I think its time management repaid the guy for being so loyal his entire career. Sign him to a long term deal and let him retire a habs. Then offer him a front office job. "If he's such a captain" " The thing is that management doesn't want to overpay him and give him a contract he doesn't deserve. The Habs don't want Koivu on a 5-year contract and the Habs don't want Koivu making double what he deserves. It would be great for Captain Koivu to retire a habs but just like all the other 600 players in the league, he's gotta negotiate for his salary and 5 years is one negotiation talk he will not win. You seem to have a problem with me saying "If he's such a Captain." When put into context it's saying that a Captain should be the most valuable player on the team, not a liability. If Koivu gets a 5-year huge contract than he's a liability and his presence is only hurting the club no matter what his output is on the ice. Gainey is better than that and won't ruin our team so that he can overpay one of his good players. Something you're forgetting is that Koivu most likely WANTS the 1-year deals. He is most likely going to retire at an early age and it can be at any time. He doesn't know when he's going to quit so he wants to keep his options open. You think Koivu wants his future locked up and decided for the next 5 years? If you were negotiating Koivu's contract he'd fire you for ruining his life. Why don't you let the Saint decide and stop using your telekinetic powers to tell us what people think.
