Storyline:

Welcome to Super Bowl Sunday Habs fans where the Habs hold a 16-14-1 (tie against Philadelphia in 2002) record since they began playing their Super Bowl Sunday matinees every Sunday in 1990. There were a few exceptions where they didn’t play due to things like lockouts, etc. They hold a 21-14-1-2 overall on Super Bowl Sundays including games they played prior to it becoming a yearly thing.

The Habs enter the contest amidst a rough patch within their schedule and hope to gain a crucial win for the team prior to a 2 week layoff for the 4 Nations Cup.

A few weeks ago, the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning to gain a 2-0 season series lead against their modern day rivals. After the match, Tampa coach John Cooper referred to the division as being much closer than it has been in the recent past and that the days of having easy matches within the division are long gone.

The Habs have been shutout for 2 consecutive games at home so they will need to find some offense from some of their top 6 if they look to stand a chance.

The Lightning are entering the game after en extremely solid week, having defeated Ottawa twice and Detroit once both of which are teams that they desperately needed to beat as they are in direct competition for the final few playoff spots. In fact, while Ottawa entered the week with the 3rd playoff spot from our division, Tampa Bay now holds the spot after a very successful week.

Finally, Kucherov is a late scratch today due to an upper body injury.

Hopefully the Habs can take advantage. :habslogo:

Slaf was not great on either goal, 1st was dumb turnover and 2nd he was coasting back from Tampa end last man back and watched Tampa score with a 2 on none.

For sure.  Bad pinch by hutson too.

I can’t watch games this early in the morning, especially not when I have heaps of papers to grade. But the Sportsnet highlights from the first show:

1. Comical, ridiculous defensive breakdowns on the two TB goals

2. A brilliant stretch pass by Hutson and a ferocious shift by Anderson

I infer that we really miss Guhle, but what we miss even more is playing the cohesive team D that led to us going 12-3.

Cant score moreso this weekend.

Only gave up 6 shots and had 12.

He has potential ... but I think we (all?) can agree that he's not ready yet.

Save percentage (I'm too lazy to look up GSAx by game)

First four games: 1.00 .957 .882 .970

Next four games: .857 .909 .885 .861 (today's game not included)

I expect a big part of this is that there are now scouting reports and video on him, so teams can better exploit his weak points (similar to Primeau's glove hand).

He'll need to work on those to solidify a long-term NHL career.

The game thread is officially finished

I only started posting it during the first intermission because there was nothing up yet. It took me awhile to find the Super Bowl stats, and then the broadcast mentioned it as well, and I didn’t post much about goaltending because Dobeš had already been pulled by the time I finished writing.

Oh well, at least they have scored a couple goals.

Anderson 6 shots.

Quick pull of Dobes it seems.

GO KC!

I wasn’t able to watch the first period either but watching the highlights of the goals, that’s what I noticed from the two goals against us as well. Players left completely alone in front of Dobeš.

When I was a 10 year old playing peewee hockey, I used to dream of receiving the puck in the same situation that Noah Paul found himself in for the first goal.

1 goal game after Gallagher scores his 2nd of the game.

Relief goalie in, Kucherov out.

Let’s do this.

Well the poll question was a tough one today as Girgensons scored the game winner. It was his first goal of the year.
