Hughes said in an interview yesterday that it's not possible to do everything in one summer. Dobson and Bolduc are both long-term additions to the Habs' core, and Dobson, in particular, elevates the Habs' D to near-elite level (and maybe elite depending on Reinbacher's and other young defenders' development).

The loss of Armia and Dvorak ($5.4M AAV!) hurts the PK but this is a short-term issue that will be addressed through either internal development or through the addition of another forward.

Excellent post, agree 100%. There just wasn't the right 2C available so why waste assets on a center that will make you marginally better. Hughes used assets to substantially upgrade the defense and this will pay long term dividends.

Rome wasn't built in a day but we are getting closer.

I keep saying it but there are no Cs there this summer.

Keep looking but I think this is a trade we can make at American Thanksgiving if someone has a bad start ala Carrier and Nashville last year.  Someone will be terrible and look to move NHLers for picks/prospects at that time, especially with Gavin McKenna in this draft (once a team decides they are out, they might tank).

I am not disagreeing, just stating that the whole point of doing a reconstruction is to get close (and win) to a Stanley cup; lots a good work has been done, some additional work is necessary.

subtracting the elite goaltending of Price and significantly improving the goal scoring capability can be judged to having a team  at similar "bubble team" level from a few years back. Habs need a top-2 center and a PK specialist to become contenders.

Also, the context of the conversation was tradable assets. I don't consider Reinbacher to be a tradable asset. Especially with Mailloux out of the system.

EVERY prospect is tradable in the right deal.

Anyone else notice that McTavish has yet to sign in Anehiem? Makes ya wonder what sort of package it would take..?

Its not that unusual for RFAs to be yet to sign

Prominent player, no arbitration rights so the only leverage is to delay.  Contracts for players like him usually get settled in mid September when training camp approaches.

I wonder if Beck + Anderson would get the trade done ? I know Hage would get it done but if i’m montreal I would make Hage untouchable.  I would trade Beck over Hage, .

For a 23-yr-old, 50% faceoff percentage after only three NHL seasons, who was their second leading scorer in 24/25

Thanks ... I needed a good laugh ...

Honestly, I would be shocked if Anaheim traded McTavish. If they were to, it would probably start at Guhle. To put it in context, I think Crosby to Montreal is a pretty big stretch (and that's putting it mildly), but Crosby to Montreal is probably far, far more likely than McTavish.

McTavish is very intriguing to me, and I'd love to get him, but this is a move that will come with significant pain in terms of the trade assets required to get him, if he's even available which I find unlikely.

Guhle does sound like a likely ask from Anaheim.

Yes, McTavish won't come cheap. It will hurt, don't want to mess with the young defense.

So then the ask is likely Slaf or Caufield ... or Hage and the Habs 2026 first rounder (unprotected).

Guhle, unprotected 1st, Kapanen For McTavish?

I would do it and then extend Matheson.

2C solved for a generation

Likely a fair offer ... and with the Matheson extension option, and Reinbacher in the offing, a tempting one ... but of course, like Dobson, it would have to be a sign&trade deal (5 year minimum) ... might be worth trying to add Gudas to the equation (10-team NTC) to give Reinbacher time to "finish cooking" in Laval; maybe Trouba (12-team NTC) if the Ducks agree to future considerations (i.e., Price on September 2nd)

It’s not a bad offer, but I doubt Anaheim bites.  They should be at the same stage of a rebuild that Montreal is, so trading a young promising NHL player for a pick and a player that’s a couple years from the NHL is more of a setback.

They just traded Zegras for essentially the same type of package, so anything is possible.

They did trade Zegras but his marketability is far lower than it would be for McTavish. I just don't see Anaheim trading McTavish. He is a building block

I just dont see any other fit on this trade.  Anaheim has good young talent at all positions.  I just think realistically Guhle has to be their starting point.  And then add from there

That said i dont see him traded at all.

Thankfully our GM is not so rash. There is no way that HuGo are trading an unprotected 1st. Also, why is Anaheim trading McTavish?

Rumour is;

Mctavish wants a long term deal and Ducks dont.
