Figure we could have a thread to discuss Olympic rosters.

Who will Cooper send to the pressbox in favour of Cirelli? Might be Suzuki...

Will Hutson or Caufield surprise us by making the USA roster? I personally think they should bring Hutson just in case Hughes gets injured, but I hope they don't! I'd hate to cheer against him.

Slaf's there, Kapanen and Laine look like locks, Texier too.

Kapanen officially makes Finland, Laine's not on the roster though.  I wondered if they might put him there as a 14th forward but his injury didn't help things.

As had been reported, Caufield and Hutson aren't on Team USA while the Habs didn't have anyone who realistically had a chance to make Sweden's roster.  (Yes, there's Adam Engstrom but their defensive group is stacked, there was no way he was making it.)

USA, like Canada, has a stacked enough roster that they can afford to make some headscratching choices.

At least there were no Rob Zamuner-esque selections

Cirelli over Scheifele is close, but chalk it up to nepotism. Zamuner is just inexplicable.

In much the same way that Montreal is close to Tokyo.

Guess Hockey USA is sticking to a strict profile ... Jones was projected as Werenski's partner, clearly the "defenceman" of the pairing ... in that SPECIFIC context, Hutson doesn't make sense as a replacement.

Is Doughty even good anymore?

Both the stats and the word I've heard suggest he is a shadow of his former self. He is obviously a "reputation" choice rather than one earned by performance this season. Much like that POS Binnington, who is basically on the team because of a single, awesome gold-medal game at the Four Nations.

That said, sometimes washed-up vets of high pedigree can elevate their game for short, high-impact periods of time. I've seen this many times in the playoffs. So maybe that's the idea.

Interesting lines

We're quite far from what I had predicted.

I had

Celebrini - McDavid - Marner

MacKinnon - Crosby - Reinhart

Stone - Suzuki - Hagel

Marchand - Bennett - Jarvis/Wilson
Jarvis/Wilson - Horvat

I wouldn’t have put the lines together the way Canada did but lines  look like balanced thinking.

Celebrini, McDavid, Marner would likely get matched by Tkachuk, Eichel, Tkachuk.

Speed vs heavy, grindy,

Wilson was put with McDavid, Celebrini to counter that IMO and Wilson has the skill to keep up with them.  Wilson creates space and is impossible to out hit, out grind him.

I do like that Suzuki gets to play with Mac Kinnon but I’m unsure if Marchand fits there.

I'm just happy Suzuki is being viewed as a major piece of the roster rather than an extra FW or a 4th line guy (not that there is any shame in being a fourth-liner on that team). He's outstanding and deserves to be treated as such.

Team Canada NHLers not enamoured with the Olympic Village

I'm guessing Suzuki is on the 1st PK pairing.

And the fact his GM is the GM of the team. Having said that, Canada is no longer a goaltending powerhouse.

it would be a major mistake if he is given too much rope to be the starter.

The need to have the Pat Quinn approach with Joseph. Very short leash and then yank him.
