As we enter May, so do the Habs who are playing meaningful hockey during this month for the first time in 5 years. The excitement is palpable and Habs fans are constantly refreshing ticket resale websites, hoping to find a better deal than $500 per ticket. Keep dreaming my friends, as the prices will only continue to rise.

Storyline:

The Habs enter Friday’s game with the opportunity to clinch their first round 1 playoff series since they defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs after being down 1-3 in the series 5 years ago. That same year, they compiled a 13-9-0 record, having defeated Winnipeg 4-0 in round 2 and Vegas in the conference final 4-2, before falling in the final to Tampa Bay in 5 games.

IMG_5165.jpeg

This year’s series has been a seesaw battle with each team trading wins throughout the first 5 games. Will the trend continue in game 6? Or will the Habs finally put an end to the trend and finish Tampa Bay off just like they did 12 years ago during Cooper’s first playoff experience? Since 2004, The Habs and Bolts have faced each other 4 times in the playoffs, with the Habs claiming that lone victory.

IMG_5176.jpeg

Throughout the series there have been individual playoff storylines. Most recently highlighted by the return of Brendan Gallagher into the lineup who had an immediate impact, as well as Jakub Dobeš’ performance in game 5 and throughout the series. The unlikely trio of Texier, Bolduc and Dach, all of which came into the series as borderline healthy scratch players, have been important to the team’s success. While Demidov has been quiet, Hutson continues to impress. Overall, the Habs have had many players who are contributing to the team’s success and have the possibility to be heroes in game 6.

IMG_5167.jpeg

On Tampa’s end, Hagel has been a monster, though the Habs were able to contain him for the first time in game 5. Kucherov is always a threat, and Guentzel has not so quietly continued to have an impact in each and every game, as he rides a 5 game point streak.

IMG_5168.jpeg

On the other end of the spectrum, Vasilevskiý hasn’t quite been his usual self throughout the series, despite stopping the Habs on 4 breakaways during the playoffs.

IMG_5177.jpeg

With all the individual storylines in place, as of last game, we have seen the importance of coaching and the impact it may have on the outcome of this series.

IMG_5178.jpeg

During the second half of last year, the Habs used a lineup built on chemistry. For months, the lines remained intact and we only saw lineup adjustments due to injury, like when Heinemann got hit by a vehicle as a pedestrian in Salt Lake City. When players like Pezzetta were inserted into the lineup, one could really see the difference between our well oiled machine of regulars, and the newly inserted player.

This year was similar, however not to the same extent. The Habs have more depth. This season, we did see stretches where players like Slafkovský were moved to the second line, and the last few games of the regular season were used to mix the lineups in order to find alternatives that may work during our playoff run. In game 5, knowing how much Cooper loves his matchups, the blender came out and Tampa Bay’s players had to face new matchups that they weren’t accustomed to. In addition, it looked as though the Habs players all had chemistry, regardless of who they played with.

IMG_5169.jpeg

While fans were still able to identify certain combinations that they didn’t like, the result was more meaningful as the Habs came out with the victory. One example where fans were quick to chime in was the use of Josh Anderson on the top line. While it wouldn’t have been my first choice to use him in that position, I have no problem with the Habs at least trying to use Anderson in a Tom Wilson role, where the talent clearly isn’t at the level of an Ovechkin, but he does have the ability to produce points and more importantly be quite physical, with the hopes of opening up more space for the star players on the line which can allow them to perform. In addition, St. Louis often double shifted Suzuki, so it wasn’t the only line combination for our star player. While things may change for game 6, I also do not believe that 1 game is enough to declare it a failed experiment.

IMG_5170.jpeg

Turning the page on to game 6, the Habs will need their best effort of the series in order to finish Tampa Bay off. With that being said, if Dobeš can continue to outperform Vasilevskiy, the Habs have a great chance to end the series as they have been the better team overall throughout.

IMG_5171.jpeg

Here’s to looking forward to a rocking crowd, a valiant effort and a positive outcome in our next game. The Habs can continue to prove the doubters wrong as they did in game 5 and transition from a “young team that is learning a lot” to an eastern threat with cup aspirations.

Marty deserves a lot of credit for the line  changes.

I'm luke warm to Anderson on the first line but Marty double shifted Suzuki and Slafkovsky at times.

Gallagher only played 6:48 but his goal and just his presence were a big boost.

Caufield and Demidov are smothered and ineffective - I hope they figure it out

Great summary. I have little hope for Demidov breaking out, at least in this series, but CC is a proven commodity who has it in him. We need him to do so.

All the momentum has swung back to us, but it would be a classic ‘young team’ mistake to start looking past Tampa and lose focus. The Lightning will take advantage of any faltering or opening you give them. Habs need to show up 100% ready, focused, and hungry for Game 6, and play that way every second of every shift.

I have confidence that the top line will become a potent threat again once we get past tis Tampa series. But need one more win first!

This is a great situation ... chance to advance to round two ... or ... another chance to advance to round two AND gaining Game 7 experience

Any chance we see Hedman?

🤷‍♂️

Cooper keeps saying doubtful for this series but who knows.  Really, there's a piece to the puzzle we don't know here as it shouldn't take this long from a player coming back from a few-week leave to get ramped up to return.  A few practices, sure, but not two weeks, at playoff time no less.

Was at work in my office at lunch reading our forum and thinking about the possibility of our beloved team clinching tomorrow.

So many thoughts and memories of the joy and happiness the Habs successes brought me during my childhood.

Kept thinking of my first playoff game as a 10yr old in 1986. Game 5 wales conference clinching game against the rangers. My dad surprised me with tickets to after I got off the school bus that day.

Little did I know it would turn into such a core memory of my childhood and I’m eternally grateful to my dad for taking me.

So ran home, packed our bags, got my kids off the bus, threw them in the car and started our 6hr journey from Connecticut to Montreal.

Now get it done boys 💙🤍❤️

The missing piece is WHY was he off?  Without that, it is impossible to figure anything out regarding his possible/probable return

Even if he were to play ... it's hard to imagine him making a major impact in the first game or two back, given how long he has been out, and his performance early in the season.

Enjoy the game my friend.

Let’s hope the Habs get it done for us.

If it’s anything like the Minnesota series, and I think it is… They will.

This series reminds me of some of the old 80s series we had against the hartford whalers. I may be over exaggerating because i was young, and everything is better when youre a kid. But the back and forth. Stalemate. Battle of wills. Its the most stressful series ive seen in a while. Not counting 21, because i had low faith in the final. Maybe 2011 bruins 7 game?

Battle of wills is right. These two teams are evenly matched and fighting for every inch of ice.

The funny thing is, they don't really hate each other as far as I can see. No one is giving an inch, but there seems to be massive respect on both sides. That's different from the Bruins series in 2011 or 2014, when the two teams were rivals of the highest order and it was personal. While the added element of hysteria brings drama, I am really enjoying the way these teams are pushing each other to the absolute limit within that framework of respecting your opponent.

This series is the perfect training ground for these Montreal Canadiens when it comes to learning what it takes to win in the playoffs. From a 'developmental' viewpoint, you could not have scripted it better.

That said...they HAVE to win tonight. Shut. It. Down.

The Whalers analogy is interesting and I do recall (hazily) those series as similar in the sense of being a gigantic heap of one-on-one battles in which every player gives everything, every shift, in close quarters.

Stress-wise...well. All close playoff series are stressful as hell, LOL. I'm not sure I find this one more stressful than those series in 2021 - e.g., losing the first round would have meant losing to the vile Leafs; losing to Vegas would have meant not going to the Final. Those stakes made things insanely stressful for me at least. Similarly, those series against the especially loathsome Bruins teams of Chara/Lucic/Marchand were next level precisely because of how much I hated those dirtbags.

A chance to make some new and happy core memories right here.

GO HABS GO!!!!

So much nervous energy to deal with today...7pm can't get here soon enough.  I had a mad scramble to distract me this morning (opportunity to go to UFC328 popped up last night), but now that I'm done rescheduling the latter half of next week and planning for the trip, all I can think about is the game.  Praying for lights-out Dobes, better situational awareness from our Dmen, and the powerplay to strike tonight.  We need to finish them.

This is 100% pure awesome parenting.  Can't put a price on a great memory that will last a lifetime...worth it 10x over.  Hope you have a great experience.

I got no expectations, just hope Caufield has 8 shots and buries a couple.:gohabsgo:

Canadiens vs. Lightning Round 1 Game 6: Preview and how to watch

It will be a desperate Lightning team the Canadiens face, and that will be a double-edged sword for Tampa Bay. They will be using their potent offensive weapons to push for offence, but like we saw in the third period of Game 5, that will also open them up to counter-attacks. The key for the Canadiens will be to play smart defensively without just shelling and hoping to survive, but staying aggressive enough to turn the play the other way.

When I read BC’s post the other day, in terms of stress level, I can remember the 2010 series against Washington but I didn’t really mention it because it wasn’t really an evenly matched series, despite us coming out on top.

Ovechkin and Washington just kept bombarding us rush after rush and despite having confidence in Halak, I just couldn’t take facing the intense pressure over and over.

With that being said:

1) I pretty much always feel the pressure, nervousness and intensity during the playoffs regardless of the series or year.

2) I couldn’t pass up mentioning the series after I saw this today:
