As for skating speed, meh. Gallagher’d max skating speed is in the 78th percentile. That means he’s quicker than most of the league. Alex Tuch is in the 77th percentile, and he just signed a nice contract. Players like Ovechkin & M. Tkachuk are in the bottom half of the league, if not worse. But alas, they do have more skill. Having only watched the Habs in this century, I can't compare what I have seen to the players of the past, by Gally fought so hard to get to the top and has had a great career in Montreal. He gave it everything on every shift he played and set the platform for the team to follow as we have rebuilt. Great work ethic, outperformed his ability and lead by example. When he decides to finish in Vancouver, I hope he gets to sign a 1-day contract with Montreal and retire as a Hab. Edited June 30 by brindavis Quote

I wish you all the best, Gally! The issue is 1) hockey is not a game of max skating speed 90% of the time. Its rare you get to skate end go end in a straight line very often. Instead its a game of stops, starts, quick changes in direction, etc. 2) its also not a game of doing max speed a few times a game. Its about doing it throughout your 10-25 minutes on the ice. The NHL Edge stats give us some insights but there is a reason why 80% of this board and most analysts elsewhere are saying Gally has lost a step, cause its patently obvious when you watch full games that he isnt keeping up with the play anymore, especially on a team built on speed like the Habs. I dont think that is deniable in 2026 Maybe he does better on a different style team, but Marty, Kent and everyone else saw this season that it just wasnt working as a Hab anymore. 1 Quote

As shown in the EDGE stats, still faster than NHL average--and much faster than, say, McTavish. At this point, it wasn't really a question of the contract, but there just wasn't a roster spot available for him. Quote
