He forgot to mention BEGGING the municipal, provincial and federal governments for money/tax-breaks ... I will only be convinced when shovels are in the round ... the Sens partners are in it for the commercial/residential development ... for them the event centre/Sens are a "necessary evil" that gave them an edge when bidding for the rights to develop the parcel of land. Max-term contracts for player extensions will be reduced from eight to seven years, while max terms for players signed as free agents or extended without being on that team’s reserve list as of the most recent trade deadline will go from seven years to six years. The second big change will be tighter rules on how money is distributed throughout a contract. Teams will have less flexibility to create large salary swings from one season to the next, with a 20% limit tied to the first year and a 71% minimum compared to the contract's highest-paid season. The third major change restricts signing bonuses to no more than 60% of the total value of an NHL contract over the life of a deal. Quote

Although I don't like the longer season. Frankly even 82 was too long. But of course shortening the season will mean less revenue, so it is unthinkable for all concerned. Quote
dlbalr Posted August 18 Posted August 18 These are going to take away some of the advantages Montreal had in terms of their willingness to front-load contracts and go bonus-heavy. The year-to-year structures given to Demidov and Hutson, for example, won't be valid moving forward. The Habs can still max out what's allowable with the new rules but it will create a bit more level of a playing field overall. Quote
Peter Puck Posted August 19 Posted August 19 It will help level the playing field in one manner but tip the field even more from another point of view. Teams in jurisdictions with higher taxes are using signing bonuses to offset the extra taxes. This will reduce the effectiveness of that. Quote
