I wonder how much pressure there is now for SJS to offer at least that amount to Celebrini, or risk an offer sheet next year?

Posted

They are certainly able to match, but it will hurt their flexibility to build a contender. How much will they need to pay Gauthier and Sennecke?

It sure isn’t the Habs’ salary structure.

If I understand it correctly, if Anaheim matches, they are not allowed to turn around and trade Carlsson for at least a year, is that correct? I thought I heard the regarding the Hayten OS, so I'd assume the same rules apply here (if that was even correct reporting, in the first place).

If so, anyone think there's a chance Anaheim simply matches, waits the year then trades him for max value?

Don't think they match with the intent of doing so ... but how 26/27 goes could end with that result

Do you think Mintykov is a step up from Guhle?

Not in the slightest.  Mintyukov is another offensive guy, Guhle is the reliable defensive piece.  The Habs need more of the latter.

He has signed the sheet so it's a binding contract at this point.  Offer sheets get presented lots of other times but we only hear about them once they're signed and binding.

And people thought $14m for Robertson was too much🙄

$14M plus four first rounders for Robertson is too much.  Just because the Flyers were stupid enough to offer more to Carlsson doesn't change that.

Yes, if Anaheim matches, they can't trade him for a year.  I doubt they'd move him after that as he is their top centre and those aren't easy to come by.

That was my thought as well.

Couldn’t happen to a bigger asshole. Played hardball with all his players. Reap what you sow!

Verbeek tried to save a million or two in his negotiations when he had a chance to sign him, now it's going to cost an extra 5 or 6 million a year to match. Ouch! What's the old saying "penny wise, pound foolish"

Supposedly Ducks matching is likely to happen, got a week to mull it over i guess.

Yeah, teams always seem to wait the full week to try to pay the other team back and prevent them from moving forward with backup plans.

Speaking of backup plans, do we think Bedard or Fantilli gets an offer after Anaheim matches?

Philly might try but that doesn't mean the players would sign.  And knowing they'd be matched anyway, all they'd be doing at that point is making more enemies and setting themselves up for retaliation later on.

Mintyukov signs and extension in Anaheim.  5 year @ 7.2.

Still have Cutter Gauthier to sign.

Think they 'Get Their Ducks In Line' so to speak before announcing on Carrlson?

And yes, pun was definitely intended.

It sounds like the offer sheet was about to be signed, then Anaheim upped their offer.  I suspect it matched what the sheet was going to be but this time, they get out in front of it.  That price, meanwhile, is beyond crazy for what he has done so far.

That price does seem crazy, makes the Hutson contact look remarkable. Anaheim was looking so good down the middle a year ago with McTavish and Carlsson, now things are  a mess. Obviously some arrogance on the part of Verbeek.  How much does he give Gauthier?

... and they matched. Sure, they had space, but will they have enough space to also sign Gauthier, let alone Sennecke next year?

Verbeek has dug his own grave ... he has to find a way to make room to sign Gauthier long-term or get him to accept a bridge deal in the meantime ... the $64,000 Question is whether Verbeek has learned his lesson

Posted

My coworker (who is a die-hard Flyers fan) claimed that Carlsson had got the offer, gone to Verbeek to ask for $15M, and Verbeek had told him that no one would offer him that much. So he went back home and signed the Flyers' offer.

If true, that dismissal cost Verbeek $3M for each of the next five seasons.

I think Friedman already reported this. Although it may have been another podcast.

As always, he wasnt the only GM who made bad decisions.

What does Briere do now that he struck out?

Saw it noted that it came down to Briere or Hughes for the Habs GM job.

Not sure how Briere has done overall since his hire in Philly?

I personally think Brière is a dumbass so I’m very thankful that he isn’t with Montreal.

I do wonder if the offer sheet will sway Carlson to seek Philly as a UFA in 5 years

I think it was out there at the time of Hughes being hired that the three finalists were him, Briere, and Darche (the mystery candidate alluded to in the link below).

Local writer seems OK with Briere's GMing.

What’s next for the Flyers after the failed Leo Carlsson offer sheet? - The Athletic

But it still stings if you’re the Flyers, or a fan. Carlsson is not only the kind of No. 1 center that the Flyers will need to find at some point, but with him, the path to eventually becoming a legitimate contender would have been a feasible one — perhaps within a year or two, considering how well Briere has set the table in other areas, including finding a goaltender in Dan Vladar and keeping salaries in check for other key players on long-term deals.
