However, while he has terminated his KHL contract with HC Torpedo, he will be assigned back to them on loan for the upcoming season. So the Habs reasoning for allowing him to burn a year of this ELC may be that they have reached an agreement that Montreal can terminate the loan once Torpedo is eliminated from the playoffs? Quote

It could be that. It's also a way to get him off the ELC rules a year earlier. Coming to North America is more enticing when you're not capped at an AHL wage that's below his current KHL salary.
