shortcat1
RDS announced earlier today that Derik Brassard has come to terms with the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 3 years deals worth 850k + the applicable bonuses. I can already hear Michel "grande gueule" saying: Ben là, si Brassard est assez bon pour Columbus, jvois pas pourquoi Ti-Gui ne serait pas bon pour le Canadien. B.G. is in hot water. If he doesn't sign Lats, he will have to provide really good reasons to the press... AND to Gui Gui Gui who will feel really lonely in Drummond. and I'm certain that BG is losing an immense amount of sleep over this matter.... as with anyone in a position of responsibility and in the 'public arena', it doesn't matter what he does, there'll be someone who'll be disturbed, disappointed, upset, upheaved... so.................................. Go Bob Go! You've got the helm, you guide the ship despite what the guys on the shore are saying. :king: :hlogo: :king:

habsfan88
I haven't seen Latendresse play a whole lot yet, but I have heard tons about his play. He made the World Juniors team Canada, and the only reason why he didn't get alot of playing time was because coach Sutter didn't like him. Nothing to do with skill. If Bergeron can start playing in the NHL at 18, I think after hearing all of this Lats hype, he could play at 19. P.S: Even if he only gets 10-12 mins of ice time a game, playing with better players makes you better. I think Lats can still develope even if he makes the squad and doesnt log the minutes that he'd do on Drummondville.
Zowpeb
@Zow : why compare? the question is: Is he ready? yes he is! Can he play on the habs? considering that IMHO he's 2 X the player Perez is, YES he can. that's it. The original post compares Lats to the Brassard. And no, Lats is not 2x the player that Perezhogin is...could he be? Yes. Is he currently? No. Your comparing the two players when Lats hasn't even played a pro hockey game...and all you've probably seen are Perez's games against NHL level competition. For the record, I am not comparing Lats to Spezza in terms of talent. Just pointing out that letting guys develop with proper playing time and low pressure is crucial...AND that we don't need to lose the kid to UFA before he even hits his peak. Ottawa was VERY smart in how they handled Spezza...if they had brought Spezza up when everyone wanted they would be paying boatloads for him now and probably couldn't have re-signed Redden this year... alexstream
Oh, my bad then. In the inial post I didn't mean to compare, I said that Villeneuve would compare. In the intial post, I'm stating a fact that BG is in the cooker because of that signing. In the following posts, I'm stating a personal opinion that Lats is the most ready of our prospects... and that he's already ahead of some NHLers or "call-up options" (Ferland, Lapierre who'd be ready if we didn't have such good 3rd and 4th liners as Begin, Murray, Johnson, etc) IMO, not only he totally tossed Perez (and I was of that opinion last year too), he is also endangering guys like Michael Ryder who besides their inconsistent sniping skills, cannot bring that much to the game... and I'm a big fan of Ryder. But face that, regarding all the guys with moderate offensive talent: Kovalev : Gamebreaker Koivu: Leader Sammy : Gamebreaker, PIM generator, Dynamo, playmaker, juice drainer Higgins : absolute BEST two way guy on the team Plek : 2nd best two Ribs: no comment before I can see what he can do during the season... if I was to rely on last season, he'd be in Hamilton with Milroy. Ryder: Sniper... aka improved version of Brian Savage Perez : hasn't proven anything despite playing one full year with the habs ... was supposed to be AHEAD of Higgs and Pleks in our depth chart... among other drawbacks, he cannot keep possession of the puck. Kost : could be on a level playing field with Lats depending on what he shows... from what I saw of him in NHL last season, Perez would already be traded to give Kost more playing time... In my biased opinion, he has the best hockey sense in the team > Kovalev. Latendresse... : has EVERYTHING these guys do NOT have : Size and willingness to use it. Chip on the shoulders. Strenght, Power. He doesn't fight for the puck, he just goes through the players and grabs the puck (no kidding they were THREE around him in game one... THREE... and he went out with the puck and created a scoring chance)... and again, in my biased opinion, his shot is right next to Ryder's. He's the ultimate PF the guy to stick in front of the goalie during the PP, the guys to make room for all our smallish forwards, the guy to injure the opposition dmen, to give concussions to the Justin Williams of this world. Chuko
Great post alexstream. It seems Carbo agrees with you as well and that Perez is on the bubble. Latendresse had a great camp last year and almost made the team. When he was sent back to junior, he disappointed. I had my doubts about him, but now he seems right back on last year's track that he laid in camp. He looks like the kind of player that is more effective at the NHL level than he is in junior. If he has another good camp, I think he'll stay, and I think he'll have a good camp. As far as him being quebecois and that helping him, I say great. Don't take him just because of that, but when you have a guy with his size and talent and who is just dying to play for the Montreal Canadiens, take him. Give him a shot. He's not a sure thing, but if we don't try him, we won't know. The rest is all speculation. Let the kid earn his spot.
CoRvInA
No no no Tenderness can surely play in the NHL there are worse cases out there... the thing is that there are other players (rooks) in front of him! Only way Tenderness is considered to be playing in the big team is that he scores at least one goal vs TO tomorrow and then 2 the next game and 3 the next and so one! NO WAY he's in if he doesnt! simonus
I don't think the Habs have to provide answers to anyone if another NHL squad signs a JR player's teammate. That's just silly. maybe we should sign Ribs' linemates from juniors to help him out.... I hear this Pierre Dagenais kid is available... It is a tough decision and I am happy he is making it that way. I do believe if he has one or two more good pre season games he will at least get a 10 game tryout! bbr93
It remains to be seen whether he could be better than Ryder on Saku's line... Whoa, easy there! Better than Ryder on Saku's line? I think not. I mean, I know Ryder is "the most overrated 30-goal man in the NHL" but come on give him some credit for what he's accomplished so far. I wouldn't even consider for a second replacing him with a rookie straight out of junior. He has led the team in scoring over the last two years. And do you really want to destroy the chemistry on the Koivu-Ryder-Higgins line by putting an unproven 19-year old on it?
BTH
I don't think the argument thta he'll only play 12-15 minutes a game is very valid. I think even when he's definitely ready for the NHL he oculd very well end up on our 3rd line. It's very possible he'll be getting 15 minutes a game for his whole career. Though I think he oculd be a boost for our special teams and could definitely fit in on a top line. But I owuldn't mind one bit if he gets sent down to Juniors, as I expect will happen. hankhab
No Matter what we, or the media might think, if Carbo and Gainey don't believe this guy is ready, then he won't play. My opinion? If a guy has the skill, and has learned everything he has to in junior, then giving him 10 to 12 minutes a game in the NHL, spending time with him in practise, and gradually giving him more and more responsability, is exactly the way to speed up developement. Doesn't work, will ruin the kid, some of you may say? Look back at the early careers of Owen Nolan, Joe Thorton, Patrick Marleau, etc. Guys can really develop this way. Despite what many think, if a rookie doesn't score 30 goals in his first year, it doesn't mean he hasn't developed.
