Nilan25
I am mystified as to why the Habs are penalized so much. They don't seem to be dirty, their skating is pretty much as good as any other teams which should cut down on holding and hooking. Their coach is known for discipline. Is it a plan by Carbo to improve the PK by experience? He seems to be using everyone as well.
Chris
I would disagree with you about the skating. I think they don't skate in their own end, lazy, they are really bad at positional play, don't know how to use their body. Hockey intelligence is low. Some Habs continue to make the same mistakes over and over.
cfposi
One thing is definitely bonehead passes by the D. A. Markhov is definitely the best defensive passer, but when anyone else tries to pass out fo the zone, it results in turnovers and bad penalties to stop goals. The offence needs to work on communication as well, bad passes by them also results in turnovers. If we combined our good skating with better (smarter) passing, i bet you would see less penalties. Theberge43
I think that with Dandenault and Bouillon back in the lineup it will bring down the penalties. They both are good skaters, Bouillon is probably the best position dman on the team and they are both decent passers. It should result in less turnovers ... Athlétique.Canadien
They're getting caught down low

Dandenault out of all the defenseman gets a lot of calls down low, he is generally outhustled and out muscled in the corners. I am looking forward to having Bouillion back for his ability to carry the puck up ice.
KoZed
Here's the Habs ranked on numbers of minor penalties (the red number)... Then Bonk (our checking C) and Markov is at 7. So 5 of our regular 6 d-men are in the top 7 more often penalized players on the team. Yes, that does points out to penalties coming from problems starting in our D zone. Defensemen loses 1-on-1 battles and resort to hooking, holding and tripping to catch up. I dont think mobility here is an issue, Dandy has 3 penalties in 4 games. I would think the forwards are not helping out enough. If forwards would be there to help out D-men, there would be someone to cover when battles for the puck are lost. BUT the most often penalized forwards are actually those who helps the most: Bonk and Begin. The guys that got caught less often are Higgins & Johnson. They help out too defensively too. So I can't figure this one out.
huzer
Personally, I just think all of the other teams are just good at diving. The Habs need to practice that a little more. Has anyone else noticed how slash happy Koivu has been lately? He hasn't been getting called a lot, but he's a a lumberjack when he's back in the defensive zone. I'm always expecting him to get called, but luckily he doesn't.
RobRock
It was mentioned during the game last night that Carbonneau likes to "talk" to the refs, and that might cause some refs to call a tighter game. The other unmentioned reason thus far is simply a lack of discipline. Not supporting the defencemen in their own zone, missing assignments, and when playing from behind, just playing too aggressively in their own zone in an attempt to get back in the game. I mentionned that last night, because Ron Fournier gave that as an explanation. Supposedly Carbo -like Gretzky- has a reputation for talking to the coaches alot during the game, and refs dont like it. Phoenix is 5th in the league for most often on the PK, so maybe there is something there.

We allways seem to cough up the puck and then take a penalty as a result. As good as Souray and Rivet have been in some areas, they are terrible when attempting the pass out of the defensive zone. And Ninnima is the worst, he doesn't move his feet, and seems to be called for hooking at least once every game. I think we'll be better when Bouillion and Dandenault get back. johnnyhasbeen
....or it could be the number of officials from Ontario... We need more French Canadian refs!
JMMR
Well a lot of it is how much the habs get out hustled in the defensive zone. Janne is playing his off side and looked much better with Dandenault, so I would like to see him have a chance playing his correct side again. I also think Streit is playing well although not getting enough minutes. The more he plays the better his passes get as well as his shots. When the habs are struggling in the defensive zone watch the wingers they tend to get sucked in and out of position. This results in the defenders not having outlet pass options.
