  1. I too desperately want to beat Ottawa. I have too many friends who are Leafs/Sens/Bruins fans and love to tell how overrated the Habs are... well, beating the Sens would probably cause a few mouths to shut up, wouldn't it?

  2. I don't think Zednik is a good finisher at all. If he finished even 30% of the golden chances he gets, he's be a perennial 40 goal scorer. He's adequate for now on the 1st line but if a big time talent comes along who has good chemistry with Koivu, Zed is getting a demotion. Simple as that. He might still lose his spot to Perez this year or next.

  3. Iron Lung, thinking like yours was one of the reasons that Cujo started as the #1 in Salt Lake City; I remember very smart hockey commentators saying that Brodeur was a risk as the #1 since NJ's D shielded him so well. Then Brodeur got his chance and showed that he's world class no matter where he plays.

One Olympic gold medal and one World Cup is nothing to scoff at. I say he's the #1 under he does something in Team Canada colours to justify getting demoted. If he bombs, I doubt whoever the coach will be (is it still Quinn?) will hesitate to yank him.

  4. I think Théo gets the #3 spot. Turco has also put up nice stats in the regular season before choking in the playoffs. I doubt the Team Canada brass looks too highly upon that.

Brodeur is still the #1. There's no reason to think he won't play well in Turin.

  5. Depends on his contact, and who we'd have to give up. But if someone were to give me Sykora for free, I'd take him. He knows how to play hockey. He's responsible enough defensively (Jacques Lemaire taught him well in Jersey) and he's a proven offensive player. He has a bullet for a shot. I think he used to play the point on the PP in Jersey, if we chose to go that route.

  6. True that. And by the way the lack of playing time for rookies is really much closer to the source of our problems (if you can say that with our record) than Dags in my book. Not only should they be playing, but also playing without fear that one or two mistakes will get them benched for a week.

Julien had most of them in Hamilton/Q, so he should have a good idea of how to push their buttons, but it's frustrating to see rookies around the league do great with the new offensive freedom, and our own just as talented kids playing negligeable minutes......

I couldn't agree more. We were much, much sharper with the kids in the lineup. We've become a slower team with Perez, Higgins and Plekanec playing reduced minutes - that's not a recipe for success in today's NHL.

  7. Oh, I'm not saying it's a perfect arrangement. But I'm not sure we have a better option on the PP at this point, especially with Kovalev hurt. I'd love to see the rooks play on the PP, but Julien evidently doesn't. Of the players Julien actually plays, Dagenais and Bégin seem the best options right now.

  8. Plekanec and Higgins can both play the PK and have done so reasonably well so far, so there's no reason they should have played so little ESPECIALLY since we were shorthanded for 26 minutes.

That still leaves 39 minutes of ES/PP time... which also doesn't explain why Perez only got 1:30 of ice time.

I'm just worried that Julien has been exposed as one of those coaches who refuses to play the rooks. And it makes no sense, because all of our rookies have been good this year - we looked a lot sharper earlier in the year when they were playing a lot more.

  9. Dagenais has played a total of 44:08 on the PP so far this year. Only Koivu, Kovalev, Zednik, Ribeiro and Ryder have played more among the forwards. So with regards to the PP, Dagenais is exactly where he should be - on the 2nd forward unit.

  10. I'm with Rooster on this one. Dags is a natural goal scorer, though I'd rank him behind Perezoghin in my own personal hierachy. There's a reason Julien keeps throwing him into shootouts. Of course, Dagenais also lacks any other discernable hockey skill.

Funny team we have. We have guys like Bulis who can do anything BUT finish, and Dagenais who can't do anything BUT finish.

    *Sigh* I miss Kovalev.

  11. This has kind of been discussed elsewhere, but I thought I'd start a new topic about it.

    Ice times from last night:

    Bouillon - 32:38

    Markov - 31:59

    Rivet - 27:05

    Dandeneault - 25:49

Does this scare anyone else? I don't want these guys to get burned out by March...

  12. Julien makes so sense. If Perezoghin isn't playing because of his D, then why did Higgins only get 6:33 of ice time yesterday? I know yesterday was an atypical game because of all the penalties, but still...

  13. Why even dress Streit if he's not going to play? Put him in the press box and call up someone from Hamilton. I don't want to see Markov, Rivet and Bouillon get burnt out by March.

I'm starting to get really pissed off at Julien's ice-time policy. Higgins, Perezoghin and Dagenais barely play, Plekanec plays for maybe 10 minutes... we're basically playing with 8 forwards! This is NOT a good situation.

    On to happier topics...

Anyone know where I can see a clip of Théo's shootout save on Hossa last night? The game clips on canadiens.com stop with Dagenais's goal and the clips on NHL.com are exactly the same.

  14. Kovalev can't come back soon enough. His absence is throwing the entire team into disarray. I don't even know who plays on what line anymore.

Sure, Bonk might be an option on the first line but I'd prefer to see one of the kids out out there. I'm not sure what Perezoghin did during his stint on the 1st line to deserve being effectively benched, but why not give him 15 minutes a game with Koivu? It's not like he hasn't shown the ability to score at the NHL level.
