  1. I don't think Cote was hurt too badly. It looked like a pretty innocent hit to me. When he got up he seemed to know he might be out for a little while as he screamed "F*CK!" out before limping off the ice.

Isn't this the second Habs player Downey's injured in practice? What was that injury Latendresse received at the end of the year, was that a different Downey?

  2. Ask Pierre if TSN hired him as the token Habs dormat for TSN Leaf fans to laugh at or if he just discovered he was well suited to it after they hired him. He's a trojan horse trying to sneak into the hearts of Habs fans to break their love of the game.

Also ask him how sad he is that we traded Zednik and let Sundstrum go. No doubt Leaf fans were hoping we would keep these guys.

  3. It's going to come down to how threfs call it this year. It's all fine and good for a team like Carolina to go goonless when refs call the tightest games whenever they play. Montreal typically is on the opposite end of whatever the refs are dishing. Montreal has goons they will face the strictest refs, no goons Tie Domi will go and beat the shit out of Koivu.

It's always smart to have a guy that can contend with heavy weights even if he spends the year in Hamilton. Other teams know that he's there and they might get away with something once but he'll be there for the next game.

If refs decide to let goons take some liberties, even if its only for the first half of the year, we are going to wish we had something to respond with. Remember what Crosby put up with for the first half of the season last year?Or how well Ottawa was doing when McGratton was intimidating everyone? People are being naive, a team without a goon is incomplete. They might get away with it if the refs protect them but otherwise they're going to be harassed and intimidated. Don't look for any protection from the refs in Montreal.

  4. What a blockbuster! Old Zeddy had some good years but by the end of last year I never wanted to see him again. If he really was that bad he should of gone to retirement. People might have celebrated him then. If he isn't that bad and was justforcing the issue in Montreal the hell with him and good riddance.

Some people seem to think that we could have gotten more for him. Maybe some hockey fans that didn't see the way he played last year wold have made the deal but no GM with a clue was going to give anything up for him.

  5. TSN has reported that Brendan Shanahan has decided to sign with the Rangers. Montreal and New York made offers but Shanahan decided to sign with New York instead of Montreal.

    DAMN.

Probably the supposed interest is just cocked up TSN lies aimed at undermining Gaineys competence as a GM. Or maybe Gainey was interested in boosting the sales price for a rival team on an old player. Getting Shanahan now is probably like the Leafs getting Gilmour the second time around. His age is bound to show soon.

  6. TRADE SOURAY!

I could see Souray in a Leafs jersey sooner than Domi in a Habs.

Than again Gainey did bring us Downey. How many non-productive useless "character" players can we have on this team?

  7. Who cares what Bertuzzi did. The point is can he help this team? I firmly believe he can. Eventually Moore will be out of the picture and Bert will return to his competitive ways. If this trade is possible we shouldn't let moralizing get in the way. There is already too much of that crap in the game already. Figure skating is on the verge of becoming more dangerous a sport than hockey.

Where did all these Bettmans come from anyway? You'd think all these fans are millionaire NHL stock investors dreaming of the day Americans take over the game with their viewership.

Just change the channel to the basketball game and get it over with!

  8. But if it was Toronto, they wouldn't stop talking about the game.

True, you have to see CBC and above all coaches corners as the Leafs hockey channel. I'll have to admit I was surprised to see them following Carolina so eagerly, giving all the interviews to Carolina players. But Leaf fans want the Habs to lose just like I always have cheered against them in the playoffs.

If you can put on RDS or mute the tv and play the radio if the time delays don't mess it up too much.

Sucks that tax payers that aren't Leaf fans have to support this channel.

  9. Worst reffing, I tell you they are really turning me off hockey. Every underdog team is going to have to contend with Bettmans rigged games as well as the stastistical disadvantages. No penalty on Koivu getting speared in the eye and they go on to call every penalty under the sun. At the beginning of the game the impression was they put the whistles away, but I guess that was only for the Canes.

It was fun but this game was set up for the Canes to get back in. I really got a kick out of Stillman saying that they were waiting for their power play goal during the intermission. This just after he elbowed Markov in the face and wasn't penalized.

Way to go Habs it was a good game all things considered.

  10. Bulis also has that kind of follow my example leadership. He always throws hits and I never see him coasting around. It was frustrating at the beginning of the year when he'd keep putting us on the edge of our seats, but he has made up for that now.

I agree 1-1.5 mil is fair. Anything more an we'll regret it.

  11. Agreed to everything you said, except the Ribeiro comment, but hey, everyone has their opinions.

Just like to lay out a few stats about last nights game :

    Penalties:

    MTL - 12

    TOR - 6

4 Out of the 4 on-ice officials were from Ontario. Every game Montreal has lost to the Leafs could be blamed mostly on officiating. Coincidence? I think not.

Rivet has been a bit off for the last couple of games but lets not forget he's been our most consistent defenceman for the year

  12. The NHL is owned by the Leafs. Don't expect reffing against Toronto ever to change. Furthermore, we're in for it really bad because Toronto has such a bad team this year the reffs will follow us everywhere we go. We're going to be playing the refs right to the end. Hope the guys are up for it.

As a point of principle NHL refs should not be allowed to officiate a game like this when there is a potential conflict of interest. We should get refs from Europe or even possibly American refs not both from Ontario. If there is a ref from Ontario there should be a French Canadian ref too.

i don't know how it works in Europe but I seriously doubt they would have refs from England officiate a game between England and Scotland.

Lets face it, you can't take a person that has cheered their whole life for a team and against another and then throw them into the game and expect them to be unbiased. The bias will probably come out at a subconscious level.

The league sucks! This must be why Molson sold the Habs, no justice.

  13. Dandenault not progressing? What does that mean? he has been the same kind of player for years. He is a good 5 or 6 Dman. How about not progressing, Souray and Rivet. The pair of Markov and Komisarek have been playing very well lately. Possibly even the top pair. Dandy and Bouillon have been playing better since there minutes have gone down some. Yes i agree with the earlier poster who said Bouillon is a #7 Dman. Other then playing tough on the boards what does he do that is above average. I would say nothing. I would like to see Cote and Bouillon split that spot the rest of the year. Then the habs will know if Cote is a keeper.

Rivet has been the best Dman all season for the Habs. I've even seen Markov go through spats of screwing up this year but Rivet has shown his game face even in the worst of the slump. If the guy had a little more talent I'd put the C on him tomorrow. Every year this guy improves. His skating this year has seen a vast improvement. His passes are better and smarter. He takes the occasional stupid penalty but so has every player on the team this year. This guy should be a franchise player, not because he's great or because we plan on giving him a huge stupid contract, but because he bleeds for the team and that inspires all that see it. In our worst games he is usually the only redeemable thing.

Dandenault is a versatile player. His versatility is seen in his ability to be useless up front and on D. He has looked better over the last 10 games, but before that putting him on was like playing a man short, almost as bad as Zednik. It seems Gainey is commited to his decisions even when they aren't looking good at the time so we'll see what Dandy can do. The only D I'd easily part with are Dandy and then after Souray. Souray we'd have to get something in return.

  14. That being said, money is not always for the present and the future. Its often a reward for the past as well. I think this is what this contract represents. Saku's been in Montreal through the very lows, often been the only forward worth the ticket's price and came back from countless injuries. And dont forget that Saku always agreed to short and inexpensive contracts.

True, lets hope that fans can all keep that sense of perspective for the next three years. A one year or even maybe two year reward contract for past merits could be sustainable with low production. If he doesn't pick his game up throughout that time its going to get hard to stomach.

I also wonder if the addition of Kovalev to the team has dimished Koivu's leadership. If he no longer motivates and loses his offense skills and grit, what else will remain?

Now I know that I've gotten too pessimistic, only trying to present the down side. He might bounce back and then this whole debate will be useless.

Here's to hoping for the best

  15. i dont know what this means. This is the first yr of the cap. They were spending more than 39 million beforehand and I think they were top 10 of spending. If they dont spend to the cap it is mostly for breathing room.

Yeah I was a bit off on that one. I know, obviously, that this is the 1st year of cap. What I was wrong about was the player spending pre-cap years. The 2001 player budget was $51 mil so there will still be money and cap space to play around with if the cap goes up as assumed. This does trivialize the issue a bit, but the fact remains that even with the 2001 player budget and an additional 7.5 million to play around with the fans still booed Brisebois. Play that doesn't match the salary will always get the scorn of the Bell centre. How do you get out of that pressure cooker once its singled you out?

  16. Why?

That's nonsensical. He really wanted to be here, and didn't have to settle for less! I suppose you would have said, "No, Bob, I don't want that much - pay me less."

It's absolute common sense, for the no trade clause and his aging years he accepts a 3 year salary at the same rate of pay he was making before(even though he is not going to play at that same level nor is he expected to). This frees him from the boobirds by lessening their expectations.

Bob has a say in what's offered and if this was the first offer he threw across the table we're in big trouble. Koivu also had the choice, one can assume, of hard bargaining for a contract like he got or settling for one that takes into account his advanced years and the effect that has on small injury prone players.

Its all fine and good to be sentimental over players, but you have to maintain some perspective.

As for Kaberle, he's a skilled D-man and there is a general shortage of D in the league right now. Also, who cares about what Toronto does. Just because other teams make mistakes doesn't they justify ours. Personally, I think Kaberle is worth every penny and I would be happier signing him at that price then Koivu.

Make no mistake, I like Koivu, only not enough to justify this contract. One fan/arm-chair gm's opinion. Hope you guys that are getting all defensive about this don't come around yelling about his money and play over the next three years.

Very nice post KoZed very well said or should I say typed.

This will indeed make Saku more accountable if this team does not progressively get better over the course of his contract.

Agreed, and what do you do if this doesn't work? No trade clause! 3 years with thumbs up our asses that's what.

  17. Forget Ribeiro, French media, salary caps and whatever else lame bullshit that can be brought to the floor in justification of Koivu's contract. He is not a great player and not worth that much money with a no trade clause. Thank you all of those whom pointed out the comparison between Sakic and Yzerman.

Everyone likes Koivu for his past glories and his love for Montreal, but if he really wants to be here he should have settled for less with the no trade clause. At the salary and duration he's signed for we can't exactly shuffle him under the rug. And once fans turn on him we won't be able to trade him away. He looks like a tired player, his body language no longer communicates leadership and he is slower and takes bad penalties. Right now is the time to make the appraisal of his true value and future, giving him a fair deal or letting him go. You don't wait until the cracks come apart and become so glaringly obvious that all can see. That's how you wind up stuck with the Perreaults Audettes and Theodores, counting down the years till you can get rid of them. I would have been far more impressed with Bob had he given Theodore the brass taxes and the same is now true of Koivu.

This team has never spent up the cap level of 39 million to my knowledge and will not likely go that high even if the cap goes 100 million. Unless the Habs have found a windfall of money and are prepared to throw it at another star forward and a first rate D, we are looking at many more years of frustration (God only knows what we're going to do about goaltending. Huet's great but how long can he last?).

We would have been better off looking for a great player, whenever one becomes available, at an even higher price than signing Koivu at this price. A new wave of Doug Gilmour types are already out there and Koivu will bit by bit pale by comparison. Once people get annoyed of his age slowing him down and start booing, Koivu will be in the unenviable position of finishing his career on a bad note. Not the way I would have wanted to see this great human being finish up. His greed, like Theodore will be his undoing.

  18. while I was checking some Canadiens' stats @hockeydb, I noticed Steve Begin is playing semi-pro from time to time, when he has nothing else to do. Even on Habs game days (25 november Montréal played in Buffalo).
