  1. Didn't Garon get drafted before the 6th round...I think he was a 2nd or 4th round selection for us. Not that I was looking for mistakes in the article...I just can't imagine that the Habs have NEVER taken a goalie before the 6th round.

  2. 1) Demitra - he's the best UFA on the market IMO...

    2) Murray - would be a perfect fit for our offense

    3) Zhitnik - our D could use a guy like this

Other then them and Kovalev there isn't really any other UFA that I'd even bother with. The rest of them aren't much better then options from our own system. We can find the d-men we need in our own system, we can find the offensive talent in our own system...IMO there are only 4 UFA's that are a definite upgrade over our own players...yes, I realise that some guys like Palffy would be an upgrade but they are never healthy enough to bother with the risk. JMHO.

  3. I wonder if the Selanne rumours are fueling Kovalev coming out of hiding...As soon as the Habs are rumoured to go after other UFA's Kovy finally comes out of hiding and says he's still interested in playing for the Habs. I think the Habs have offered him the best salary he's seen yet and he's afraid that if we sign someone else then he'll lose the biggest payday he has available.

Am I the only one who sees that something doesn't jive here? And they're going to miss a whole year only to figure out that they can't even respect the cap they were fighting for all along?

    Anyway...

And that's not even including the tons of bonus clauses.

The thing is though that the league wouldn't institute the cap with immediate penalties...there would likely be a 3 year grace period which would allow teams and salaries to gradually get under control.

So a number of salaries would be off the books by then.

  5. I can't believe the Pens just got Recchi for 3 million a season...3 years, 9 million. He had 75 points last year, is respected, solid at both ends. Sure he's 36 but that signing can't bode well for what someone like Kovalev wants to make...I don't see how the Pens can afford Kovalev AND Recchi. They're practically bankrupt as it is...and why would any player want to play in that atmosphere?

  6. LOL...just shut up...you're acting like an idiot on the Perreault rants.

Perreault did NOT perform well last year at all...he had 31 points in 69 games. LMAO...I'll take Bonk on the Habs every day of the week and twice on Sunday when Perreault is the other option.

  7. Hmmm...I think you are looking at things wrong.

Chipchura by all accounts is expected to have a long NHL career but just doesn't have a lot of upside. Especially in his offensive game. But he plays big, has leadership qualities and is strong defensively. He'll almost certainly find a role as a checker for a number of years...making him a safe pick. Edmonton likely passed on him because the kid they picked has more upside potential.

I am okay with drafting a player that most believe will almost certainly make the NHL as a 3rd line C at least. I don't see anything wrong with taking the "safe" pick when you are picking as low in the 1st round as the Habs.

  8. Until CJ says that Bonk will be his 3rd line C I will continue to believe that the Habs are best suited with him on our top line LW.

Gainey is the GM and CJ is the coach...last time I checked it was CJ who made the lines...that's not to say they don't talk about these things but it's a little early to say that it's set in stone.

If Bonk is asked to match up against other teams top lines and CJ likes to play our top line vs. other top lines then ask yourself where Bonk will play... ;)

  9. Bonk is just as effective on the wing as C...don't give me that crap.

I don't have a problem with the size of our C's...I can live with a small group of C's if we have big wingers...it's just about a balance of size IMO.

Besides...Bonk may have size but he doesn't use it well so I don't buy into that...it's about PLAYING WITH SIZE. And Bonk doesn't play big.

It's not about whats good for Bonk...it's about maximizing his potential production and thereby getting the most out of him for the team...I thought that was fairly obvious.

I'd like to see 2 good scoring lines(18+mins each), 1 good defensive line(14mins) and 1 energy line(10mins) that's solid defensively. I don't buy into this balanced line crap...your best players should be on the top 2 lines and should get more ice time then everyone else.

Moving Bonk to the 3rd line moves a guy who is already potentially our 3rd highest scorer off the top 2 lines and makes him potentially our 6th highest scorer. BTW, I'll take Bonk over Andreychuk, Francs and Newy everyday...not good comparisons IMO.

  10. Bonk is solid at both ends but he isn't a checking line C at all. He doesn't use his size as effectively as he could...and using 3.5+ million on a checking line C isn't a good use of those resources.

Bonk needs talent around him to excel...as a winger he'll have that...and he'll easily have more minutes as a top line winger. Especially considering how CJ matches top lines against each other.

Also, I think Dowd is a fine 3rd line C...

  11. First. Garon would NEVER have a chance to improve his worth much more then it is now...it just wouldn't have happened with him backing up Theodore. IF he turns into a good goalie it's a mute point...because he wouldn't have had the opportunity to show that here.

Second. I don't know why everyone thinks Bonk will be our 3rd line center...I think it's obvious that the team will use him as a LWer on the top 2 lines. He's played a lot of LW for the Sens over the years and can bring some size to the top 2 lines.

IF(I know a big if...) the team re-signs Kovalev or a similar RWer then we have:

    Bonk-Koivu-Kovalev

    Zednik-Ribeiro-Ryder

Higgins/Begin-Dowd-Ward(or Lappy if the rumoured interest is true)

I won't bother with the 4th line 'cause we've got lots of players to fill it.

Seems to me that Bonk's best fit with us is as a LWer. I don't see any reason why Dowd shouldn't be our 3rd line C...

  12. I can't see Kovalev signing for that little($4M) until the CBA is done and, hopefully, some sort of cap is in place...at which point he can negotiate with everyone. If he's not signed by July 1st then he won't be a habs IMO.

I'd love to see Dowd back with the team. I wouldn't mind Langdon back but he's not a priority IMO.

    Perreault, Dykhuis, Traverse, Sundstrom...gone.

We really need to get Kastsitsyn over here playing in the AHL and have him go through a training camp. It's unfortunate about Perezhogin because I'd have liked to see them play together in the AHL for a year to see if they could develop some chemistry...and so Zhog could help ease Kastsitsyn's transition.

I can't wait to see if Locke can play in the AHL...he could be a steal. I know lots of guys can score in the CHL and don't pan out but this kid wasn't just a one year wonder.

I'd sign Souray and Zednik...but I'd be looking to move Souray. His value is as high as it will ever be and he could net the return of a player better then he actually is...

I agree about Matvichuk or a d-man like him.

I hope we can draft some good d-men because I don't like much of what we have in our system currently. Komisarek and Hainsey aside...and it sounds like even Hainsey is a stretch.

  13. I agree about the D-men. We need at least 1...maybe 2.

Garon is only a year younger then Theodore so I gotta think that Theodore is the present and future.

Trading Ribeiro is risky business...Koivu can get injured easily and our depth at C wouldn't be great. However, I agree that I don't see Ribs getting much better then he already is...hope he proves me wrong. I just think a 65 point type guy is all he'll be...not that this is a bad thing by any means.

I hope to god that Dags is gone...

  14. I agree that generally speaking guys need to have a long career with the Habs to have their numbers retired but Esposito and Mahvolich are exceptions to the rule IMO. It's not often that players are ever as good as them...although I can understand the opinion otherwise.

And comparing LeClair and Langway to them is just wrong...your mother should send you into a corner for even implying that.

  15. I'd like to see the following numbers retired:

    Dryden

    Robinson

    Roy

There are a few others that are worthy of consideration but these 3 names are the most deserving IMO.

Mahavolich, Lach, Geoffrion, Esposito, Vezina and even Gainey could all have their place as well...but the other 3 guys are probably more deserving.

I like the fact that it's damn near impossible to get a number retired with this organization...if too many get retired it cheapens the meaning of it.

  16. There is no way in hell Maltby deserves to be on this team. I've watched Maltby play a lot since he's from here in the KW area and there are industrial league guys as talented. I don't even understand how he's made it in the NHL. If he is a sample of the top "checkers" this country has to offer then not only are we supposedly falling behind in our "skill" players but now it looks like we can't even find good checking line guys. I don't buy into the whole "chemistry of the Yzerman line" story either. That single training camp selection makes me think this whole process if a ######ing joke...

  17. It's kind of pointless to go back this far to figure out where the team stands on a deal it made almost a decade ago...

How about we analyse the Gretzky deal that Edmonton made and see what they ended up with...it's not like the gains from a deal run on forever.

Yes, we didn't come out well on that deal. However, it's not like Roy left the team with much of an option...no one was going to offer us much for a goalie that didn't want to be here...and if Houle held on to him, and let him sit at home, the press would have ate him alive.

I didn't like Houle at all...he totally screwed the team up. No direction, overrating francophone players for the media, and couldn't trade his way out of his house. But I don't fault him too much on the Roy deal...it's everything else he did.

  18. I think he can still play for the Habs next year if he was to make the team out of training camp...I don't think the NHL honours AHL suspensions.

Now if there is a lock-out next year it just means he furthers his development in Russia and comes back to try and make the Habs the year after.

It's a ridiculous suspension when taken in the context that Stafford only got 6 games for the EXACT same action. The ONLY difference between what Stafford did and Perezhogin did is this: Perezhogin has better aim.

I'm sick and tired of the results of an action being weighted soo much more then the intent. Yes, the results need to be taken into account but 6 games vs. 1 year??? That's just too much...I guess they didn't want to appear to suspend someone who was supposedly a "victim". Perception is everything I guess...I really hope they appeal this and it comes down significantly...but I don't see how it would.

  19. I disagree because Perezhogin plays a different style of game from Kastsitsyn. Kasts is pure offense...and without the need to be as defensively minded he should have an easier transition.

I think his skill level can be as high as a guy like Kovalchuk...THAT'S how good I think Kastsitsyn can be in the offensive end.
