    We've all probably heard the expression, "sometimes the best deals are the ones you don't make". I think that can apply to the Canadiens over the past while. Personally I'm very glad we didn't make two trades, that if the insiders were correct, we were at least close to making. The two deals I'm talking about were for Vincent Lecavalier and Iyla Kovalchuk.

    Based on his numbers this year and his salary I would not have wanted us to give up young players or picks for Lecavalier who may be beyond his prime and we'd be trading for someone who may have started on the downside of their career. I think that happened when we traded for Dennis Savard. We gave up future potential for a player whose best days were behind him. As great as Lecavalier has been in the past, at this point in his career, I'm glad we didn't give anything up for him.

    Regarding Kovalchuk, I heard Elliot Freedman say on the radio last week that the President of the KHL, Alexander Medvedev, told him that he wanted to build the KHL around Kovalchuk next season when he became a free agent and that he could earn $10 million tax free in the KHL. In Freedman's opinion there is a very good chance that Kovalchuk will play in the KHL next season. So for us to have given up young players and picks for a rental, to me that is a total waste unless we were a strong contender for the cup.

    So, while Gainey may still make some deals, I'm glad we didn't make these two. They are both great players, no doubt, but I don't think they'd be good long term choices for us right now.

    i agree...i would like to bring in a couple young guys like Patrick Sharp..i just dont think chi trade him till the off season..

    I tend to disagree - I think Komi took some extra dough and ran - but I'm not gonna argue about it. It's looking more and more like Komisarek is a decent but basically overrated defenceman, so the Leafs can have him.

    komi is so over rated..my brother was a big komi fav and we would fight about him every game we watch..he loved him and i said he was ok but over rated..now that he ran to T.O he agrees..but the funny party is he hates OB but i think he looks alot like komi but better..his more of a play maker, better shot, and learning to fight and play like a big man..the only thing he does do as much as komi is go for the big hit that as cause komi to f*ck up when he miss or look great with a good hit..

    but my brother like most habs favs only see what they what and loves highlights...komi could have a bad game but all they recall is the one big hit that replay of sportdesk all day..and love him for it..

    OB problem is the goal he score on his net...people here his name and recall this play and dont like him because of that..

    i feel OB well be just as good as komi and more useful..

    Yeah, just like that one :

    Sources tell me that a deal will happen someday between two teams in the NHL, this deal will see players exchanged from one team to the other and one of the team will get a defensive player while the other team will get a more offense focused one. My source tells me that this deal could happen at any moment soon, but if it doesn't happen in the next day or so, it just might not happen at all.

    GUYS STOP PAYING THAT GUY. YOUR TIME, YOUR ATTENTION, YOUR CLICKS ON HIS PAGE IS PAYING THIS GUY, HE'S GETTING RICH ON YOUR BACKS, STOP, PLEASE STOP!! (yes I'm just jealous, but I also think he's no better than Maddof!)

    I really don't want Hemsky or Moreau. The only safe oiler to pick up is Gagner and I doubt if he is available.

    We really need to sign Pleks - the guy does it all for us, PP, PK, 5-5 he has been our best player. We NEED to sign him, not trade him to the WORST team in the leauge unless we are getting Edmonton's #1 in return.

    he might not what to sign and if so we MUST TRADE HIM.................

    Moreau would bring some toughness up front, especially on a line with Cammalleri and A. Kostitsyn. If we're going to lose Plekanec (via trade or free agency), I'd like to see some grit added to Montreal's top two lines & some scoring punch on the third. Here's what I'm thinking:

    Pouliot-Gomez-Gionta

    Moreau-Cammalleri-A. Kostitsyn

    S. Kostitsyn-Cogliano-Moen

    White-Pyatt-Lapierre

    This would also give us some breathing room - $3M+ (minus all the UFA's we don't sign; Metropolit, Mara, Bergeron). I see Carle joining the team in 2010-11, while players like Pacioretty, Maxwell, Weber & Subban will challenge to make the team.

    I just read this as well. I'm thinking that Edmonton has their sights set on Price & Plekanec. I speculate the Habs are definitely asking for Hemsky and more in return. Perhaps Cogliano and Brule & a draft pick/prospect as well. Moneywise it works since you can send D'Agostini back down and release Metropolit. This trade is basically for next year (since Hemsky's hurt). That's why Montreal's waiting, to see how they do in the next 3-4 games.

    Sources tell me the Canadiens/Oilers situation is coming to a head..."There are some key players involved..Edmonton Loves this deal. Montreal is waiting. We are hearing the Canadiens also received the best offer yet for one of their goalies, but in doing this deal the Habs would be setting themselves up for an issue with their backup. However, down the line they would be far, far better off were they to make this deal."

    The attack on O'Byrne is symptomatic of how Habs fans treat all young players. The kid is learning the game and the Habs are doing the right thing by pairing him with Markov - putting him in a position to succeed. He may never be a top-4 guy, or he may become a heavy-hitting 4th defenceman. But whatever happens, public crucifixion is NOT the appropriate fan response.

    he looks like komi type player to me..komi pair with markov work great for him..

    Idea being kicked around by another fan on a different board.... if Plex can't be re-signed, does anyone think a deal with Chicago could be worked out where we send them Plexo and we get Sharp back? Sharp is signed long term at $3.9m, plays both C and wing (shoots right). Chicago has to shed players from next year's payroll, but get a guy to help this year's team that is actually playing better than Sharp in Plekanec. We get a long term solution for our top two lines that comes a little cheaper than Plekanec (we think Plexo will get more than $4m). He's also a superb PKer much like Plekanec.

    Worth a thought. There would probably be other pieces involved, but that's the starting point.

    that would be a great trade for both teams..i think it works for both teams...NOW IF ONLY BOB COULD PULL IT OFF...

    i think bruke pull off some good moves for next year...but you cant blame bob because bruke is doing his job..their 28 other gms in the nhl other then bruke and bob...i think the flames made a bad move...i think they could of got more...the ducks move is not bad..it works for both teams...i cant dream how bruke got the ducks to take blake..but the ducks need to drop some cap and it works for them because they got to sign bobby ryan..

    This Phaneuf deal is absurd, it reminds me of Gilmour for Leeman.

    The Canadiens trying to acquire an older player making $10M per, on a team that has massive money problems

    still have to give up Price and Plekanec, yet the Leafs acquire a 24 year old for a UFA, two 3rd liners and a 4th liner?

    That is a franchise altering deal, the cap concerns are little to none, because they can dump any of their other 3 D for

    picks or expiring contracts.

    this well be a big for T.O..and only the start of moves for them..iam not happy..

    To be honest I didn't even feel the need to watch this game. For me it's crystal clear that this is a poor team and that Bob Gainey really goofed up by putting this team together during the off season. This team is inconsistant,childish,lazy,small,careless and much more I care not to write about. I beg the Molson family to rectify this situation quickly and speedily and hire someone sufficient to put together the right chatacter of players who will jell and compete in this new NHL. We the fans have had enough of this garbage!

    half the teams in the league is in the same boat as us if not worst off..if it would only be so easy to put together a cup team every year..if you know how..let us all now..i think its fun that people thinks this team was going to win the cup this year..

    we had a five year plan that went to sh*t..we finish first one year and then the next year everything fail apart in the dressing room..the coach lost the team..our C could get them to come together..our vet could rise to the job and the kids couldnt live up to what fans what..

    so we blow up the team and now we must give them time to get back on track..this is a 3 year plan at least...you do get it that there 30 teams in the nhl and they all have the same goal..this team really need a few more changes and a little luck of all our star players not getting hurt..

    i really think with a few more plays that we are going to be a really good team..

    we need one more top 6 foward..a much better 3rd and 4th line and maybe one more top 4 D..but it take time to get these players..

    at least we got a pt...and OB looked good today and seems like his getting better..

    i dont know why anyone is losing their mind..i for one knew we wasnt going to be that good this year and that we were missing a few players to be a real good team..

    with all the guys we had hurt this year, i think we are doing pretty well over all..

    i what us to make the playoffs as a habs fan but it be close..

    i was mostly hoping that the guys we pick up would learn to play as a team(win or lose) and then we get a good draft pick and hope bob would make a couple of trades and bring a few more good players in the off season..

    i really think we are on a 3 year plan..

    God WTF, how stupid is Martin. This game is on the DAMN COACH. WTF is Bergeron doing on D in OT???? First He is a pylon for Spezza then after that screw up he is back on with Pleks and Markov. If you are going to have Bergeron, you may as welll have Gionta or Pouliot with Pleks.

    God I don't think i've seen more incompetent coaching in my life :wacko::angry::angry::angry::angry::angry:

    we got great pp and good pk...its 5 on 5 we really suck and that is mostly do to the third and fourth lines not being that good..we need better depth plays..i dont think you can blame the coach..Markov didnt even look good in this game...

    Maybe what Komi became, but not what he was at his best. He should be playing ahead of Mara, though.

    Penalty here on Gill. I'm starting to wonder if Gill should be the D that plays forward 5 on 5 and gets shifted back to D for special teams (the PK). I've never seen a D so defined by his PK abilities.

    i aways thought that komi was way over rated by montreal fans..most only see it now because his with the maple leafs..
