  1. Jokinen would bring a different set of problems, of course.

Plex-Jokinen-Koivu. 3 centres, who plays where? Obviously Plex on the top line; then Jokinen with Higgins and S. Kost? Koivu with Latendresse and maybe Streit?

But yeah, Jokinen's skill set is fantastic. I'd imagine the Panthers would want a lot. Didn't he just sign an extension with them recently?

Jokinen also plays wing. I believe he is good friends with Koivu and they could be a very good fit together on the same line. Also, he could serve as the Koivu succession plan.

  2. When you add Higgins after all-star break stats he has about a half-season being on pace for over 50goals and one of the top scorers in the league. So Plekanec has not yet shown us as much as Higgins at NHL level. At one point some people were calling Higgins a franchise player. But I think Plekanec out-scored Higgins in their last AHL seasons, and I agree he looks very good on top two lines currently.

  3. Last year Mike Ribeiro had 16 goals, 51 points. This year, he's on pace for 16 goals 57 points. And he plays primarily on the power play. Why would we have gotten more out of a trade by waiting?

By trading him in the preseason, Gainey may have found someone willing to take a chance on the upside of his "new attitude" and summer of skating lessons. But it turns out, his stats are the same - there's been no "breakout". And in Montreal, he would have a horrible plus minus playing with Kovalev and Samsonov.

  5. Well I was pretty skeptical of Lats being on the first line yesterday, but I'm ready to admit I was wrong. Begin did also play a gutsy game, but Lats did more offensively. And its not just RDS claiming Lats was our best player - Sportsnet West (Edmonton broadcast) gave him the 2nd star after Smyth. If you call it down the middle, I think you have to admit that Lats played a great game on the first line. He did not look out of place at all.

I also did not agree with Carbo's choice to put him in the shootout, but I disagree with about half the shootout choices anyways so I guess the coach can get the benefit of the doubt for a hunch, espescially if we end up winning.

  6. Are these people at Cogeco and Center Ice idiots....they list teh game starting at 7:30....I'm gonna be so pissed if this doesn't turn on soon.

you're getting the game on center ice? i thought you need versus? i couldn't set my dvr to record the game because i have dish network which has a contract dispute with versus. if its on center ice im ditching work right to go watch the game right now!

  7. It says In the article that Striet co-leads the team, what does this mean?? because I know he never wore an A last year, or was he just a silent leader in the locker room who is are 7th defense men

I think they're referring to his 3 preseason points at the time the article was written.

Anybody know why Streit hasn't dressed yet this season? Why has Carbo not gone with 7 defensemen? It sounds like Streit had earned a shot based on pre-season, and it would be nice if he wasn't coming in cold against Calgary.

  8. I don't think it was a panic move, just not Gainey's first choice. I don't think Gainey really makes panic moves. Yes, he clearly wanted Shannahan and possibly Elias and Arnott over Samsonov. But still, signing Samsonov takes the pressure off of rushing Kostistyn/Perezhogin and adds a veteran right-handed shot to our 2nd line.

Personally, I think Samsonov will find a niche in Montreal. But worst case, if he really doesn't work out, and Perezhogin/Kosty step up, THEN I would see Gainey "dumping" Samsonov to make cap space so that we can keep our defense core together next year.

  9. Beating the crap out of him might fix it, but it might be more civilized to give this guy some penalties. No call on Koivu, then again on Markov next game, and now this. It seems the league is turning a "blind eye".

  10. Has Souray ever said that or is that just what everybody assumes? Every quote I've ever seen is that he wants to stay on this team. Even more recently he was talking about how NJ is so great because they kept their core together for 10 years and that's what he'd like to see the Habs do. Is there actually a record of Souray ever saying that he wants to play anywhere else?

  11. He does seem to thrive on big games. He's been a key contributor to whatever modest recent playoff success we've had - that alone puts him in a different league than Ribeiro. That and the fact that he has talents which clearly make him more effective in the new NHL.

Though, I wouldn't build a team strategy around Kovalev showing up for every shift - which is another reason why hard working Plekanec may end up complimenting him nicely.

  12. I agree that these analysts are lazy. I wonder if some of these guys actually follow more than a couple of teams. Based on the preseason, I would have thought there would be more concern about whether or not Montreal will get steady goaltending, and not Saku's health. Actually, the Koivu line is the least of my concerns right now.
