Good player, at a (distant) point in his career excellent.
The cancer throws a lot of perspective out the window.
At this point a second line centre - arguably always should have been. I have to think his age; the cancer battle; the eye injury have had a huge effect on his game and energy level.
Retire his number? 0%.

So what point is this Montreal Canadiens club at this season right now?
The shite point.
-
None taken - I think this will be only a temporary thing. They are old-school lads who will give the boys a chance.
The core is finished, regardless - unless they win the Cup, of course.
-
What do you expect from the Monkeyheads or their inbred 'fans'? Overfed civil servants who wouldn't know a slapshot if it ripped them a new a**hole.
Emery might get a suspension because the League hates the Canadian teams - especially us & the Laffs: with our guaranteed high attendance, we don't need to win any games! If he played for Atlanta or Nashville or Anaheim or Carolina or Phoenix or Florida, forget it - zero suspension, maybe some b.s. fine.
Running Emery next game...really would take some guts. Does this team have any guts?

Go CH!
I feel the team meeting will have done more than any call-up or trade. Tw ex-players who know how it is in a dressing room, I think Bob & Carbo will wait to see the response after this game.
We wn, Samsonov scores twice.

Yeah, the core is done. Koivu is in a weird way untrade-able, but must be moved to the second line. Probably should have been there most of his career.
The kids have to have a run-out, give them a very good shot, not a two-game call-up and a quick trip back on the Hambletonian Charter Express. Let them play and develop something together.
Kovalev would, I think, fetch a pretty high price. Rivet is a nice sweetner to a playoff-bound team (vet, defensive, depth, leader, blah blah blah). Ryder can be traded or at least busted down to a lower line. He scores in spurts, and maybe tonight will trigger another one, but he's in desperate need of some consistency. Samsonov untrade-able except in some kind of package. Bonk would fetch very high interest, but I wouldn't think of moving him until I was convinced we have someone else (Lapierre?) to fill his role. Someone might take a shot at Cube. And of course there is the ongoing Souray dilemma: say what you will, he would attract a lot of interest.
Be interesting to see what Bob does in the next couple of weeks - especially if we suddenly find ourselves in 9th spot.
Wait, is this a 'Habs-panic' post????
-
Besides, I have nothing to change it to.
-
PANIC!!! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm panicking, so my new first line combo will look something like this:
Kovalev-Koivu-Youppi.
Think about it: big, strong, looks good on skates, immovable in front of the net...probably not much of a backchecker, but with no centre line the new NHL is tailor-made for him...it...
-
16-20, unanimous.
BTH, can you please please please remove that horribly offensive avatar? Please?

Great to hear that Begin looked good. He sounded good - in fact that Begin-Bonk-Johnson line sounds pretty good.
At least Samsonov was buzzing around.
First line sounds like a f'n disaster. Carbo sounds like he's playing a few too many video games with his line shenanigans - though after reading KoZed's take I 100% agree with beching Kovalev.
Not too late for the boys, but there is little room for error now. Sens & Pens get a bit of daylight, we have to keep ahead of what's behind.
-
You don't think we got a shot at Anthony Esposito, do you? He'll be long gone by the time the Habs pick.
I was joking. Fun to write Espo over and over.
Crisse...c'est fini.

Kovalev back on the ice?????????????????????????????????????????????????

The refs obviously make a huge difference. The refs don't shoot at the net or play defense, though.
Intereting to see what happens to Kovalev after this. Did he start with Koivu, as rumoured?
-
Abby4life, it ain't just the refs either.
-
Notice how every goalie makes the saves of their lives against us? CKAC make it sound like Emery is Plante + Roy.
It ain't just the goalies.
Noyau pourri.
Kovalev benched for this period - maybe he's been traded already.

In a friend's apartment on St. Denis. There was a Laffs fan there & me and my brother taunted him so much he actually cried and went home before it ended. Then we were crying for joy.
Then we walked down to St. Cath & saw the 'mayhem' there - though a kid did offer stolen cd's around a bar later that night.
Have a vague recollection of trying to get into toe Blake's Tavern, but that might have been a different night, it might have been gone by then.
The follow-up question to this should be: do you remember anything about the following day?
-
Can anyone explain to me why Sergei Samsonov speaks better English than Michael Ryder?
Ryder's from the Maritimes. They call it English, but really it's Irish or Gaelic.
Ottawa can pog ma thoin. Go CH!

Go CH!
Begin back is maybe bigger than anything - the injection of some passion & desire, a no b.s. player who plays within his abilities and leads.
Markov, great to have him back.
Samsonov, we'll see. It's in his hands now.

Kovalev said earlier in the season the team should open up. Looking at our personnel, we are not really geared for a defensive Dallas Stars approach.
Singling out Murray is nuts. I think the core should - and will - be eased out over the next two seasons. Gainey is nothing if not patient, and he has a lot of assets down on the farm to allow him to be patient.
Problem is, c'est Montreal mon cher Bob, pas Dallas...
sorry Easy ryder, i just re-read your post, you didn't single out Murray. Focus is off, though.
-
To backtrack a bit to the Gainey-overpaying thing.
In the NFL, some teams have a cap-specialist on the staff. They are like a financial manager. The Vikings have Rob Brzezinski, whose job - his first duty - is to manage the salary cap and cap room. He negotiates the contracts, bonuses and keeps an eye on the cap. His scouting/talent duties are very limited: they have a GM and a Coach for those. Thus the Vikes always have huge cap space, and can pitch expensive free agents. Their problems were a tight previous owner and, now, a neanderthalic coach.
I'm wondering if the Habs have someone like that. Does anyone know? If not, they should.

Sorry, Ryder has had a lot of chances this year, especially from in close. He hasn't converted, end of.
I never meant waive him, but he - along with others - has simply not delivered this year. Maybe RobRock's idea of pairing him with Samsonov might work, especially as Plecks would draw a lot of attention on that line, and if Ryder could play off the puck, might find the opening he needs - and he need the openings - to unleash his pretty good wrist shot from the high slot. But Ryder has been awful. No-one faults his work ethic, but Downey works really hard too...
Anyone who suggests that Samsonov was not an explosive player with Boston never saw him play. He was the one guy I would cringe when carrying the puck on the rush against us, more that Thornton.
-
Look at that friggin gorilla-head logo. Let's destroy these goofs. Perez back in the line-up is a good thing. His hinger and motivation should be through the roof. As long as that second line shoots enough, it might be pretty dynamic.
First-line disaster again, it seems. Oh well, Carbo might learn...eventually...err...
Maybe they'll put Samsonov on the top line and drop Ryder?
GO CH!

I'd go easy on Higgins until next year. Probably not healthy.
Untouchable players on this team? Markov.
By the weekend we'll be on the outside looking in. Carbo is 'learning' in the least-patient North American sports market. No time or chance to learn.
The core, again, is aging and underperforming. I almost never agree with McKaskill's opinions, but he looks to have a very strong point in his editorial (which magically appears moments after another disappointing effort). They will be eased out, the kids brought up, the cap room increased. Gainey has tried - valiantly - to work with this core for a few seasons. He knows better than any of us that it will not work. He looks prepared to try a massive gamble: to possibly sacrifice a season (i.e. no playoffs) in order to rebuild the team. Of course he'll be delighted more than anyone if we are in, but...
I'd make it a high priority to resign Johnson and Markov. That's it. Everyone else is on the block - though Higgins, Plecks and Latendresse should get some slack.
On another note...who would be shocked to see Saks gone and Begin handed the 'C' next year?
