  1. Samsonov will help only if he plays with a finisher. He is not a finisher, and arguably has never been a finisher.

If he plays with Koivu we absolutely need a big forward driving to the net. The practise line as listed on TSN looked very, very interesting to me: Samsonov, Bonk and Latendresse. Bonk is an excellent passer and extremely responible defensively. Latendresse can keep his game very simple with these two: crash the net, crash the net, hammer along the boards, crash the net. Because Bonk can't be 100% ignored offensively and skates well; and if Latendresse skates hard and plays a more in-your-face game drawing a lot of attention; I think this will free a lot of room for Samsonov to wheel and deal, much like he did with the Bru*ns, constantly flying in from the blue line, ragging the puck, carrying it behind the net and exploding out the other side with other players streaming in.

This could also finally let us play Koivu and Kovalev together, but with who I have no idea (Pleckanec? Can he play wing?). That doesn't look like a well-balanced line, again with no finisher, unless Pleks is willing to take on that role. I'd make sure Streit and Johnson were back down on the 3rd line with Higgins - it would be good for Higgins to work with those two a while. Perez and Lapierre can combine with Murray/Downey for a high-energy 4th.

Ryder steaming hot dogs in the intermissions. Can he sharpen skates?

  2. I think we absolutely need a top line of Koivu, Kovalev and Latendresse. Hopefully, Lats' energy and enthusiasm, and Koivu's normal work ethic, will rub off on kovy. Plus, with those two Kovy can play more of 'his' game: cruising, hitting open skaters with precision passes, slowing things down & allowing d-men to jump in, sliding into open spaces on the weak/blind sides of opponents' defensive set-ups. He needs to be pandered to a bit, that's just how he is, so let's give him the extended time he needs on the top line, some studs to play with. Latendresse can just bang, bang, bang and drive hell-for-leather to the net all night. He seems a pretty good passer as well, maybe having two players who are constantly shifting and moving around would help him even more. Koivu has to get something back. Maybe this will not only take some pressure off of being the only playmaker on a line, but also will open up the ice a little more, seeing as teams just can't let Kovy float unchecked and will be forced to pay attention to Latendresse parked in front. Koivu is also responsible enough to backcheck/move to the top if a denfeseman rushes in. Plus, with Koivu and Latendresse back, Kovy won't need to be Carbonneau every time the opponents bring the puck at us. I think this combo should be given a bit of a run, 7 to 10 games, to get things going. It also would have a solidifying effect on the team.

Higgins can go to the second line and get his regular shift, increase his ice time, get healthy if he is in need of it. Who plays with him, I don't know. For sure Pleckanec.

Presuming none of the above get traded, of course.

  3. So is this a fluke? We've lost what, 11 of 17 or so, and are now 4 points - 4 - of being out of the playoffs.

Good teams make adjustments over the course of a season. Have we made none, and just hope that the 'magic' will come back? Or do you think it is a question of line combinations, work ethic...

Not being sarcastic, genuinely want to know. I'm of the opinion that this team is nowhere near contention and needs to be changed.

  4. The Heart of the team, for a team which most everyone says consistently plays with no heart.

Anyway, why Koivu is not a second line centre, or playing with Kovalev and a big, stong, go-to-the-net winger (Latendresse) is utterly beyond me. Why Higgins is not a second-line centre/winger is beyond me. Why Ryder is not shifting between the 3rd and 4th lines, banging around with his severely limited talent, is beyond me.

If Rivet is getting so much more ice time than Komi, it sounds like they are showcasing him - unless, of course, he is playing superbly over the last week and earning the time.

  5. Souray even said himself the team has to resign Markov before even thinking about him. Markov's movement, anticipation and positioning are grossly superior to Souray's.

Souray is having a fantastic season from the point on the PP. He is undressed at least once a night, plus is a sh*te passer from his own end.

But the way he attacked that punk b*tch from The Team With No Home yesterday really impressed me. And at least his offense offsets his poor defense to a large degree (unlike Rivet). He stated the obvious before Ottawa but no-one else was going to do it. I'm hoping that in some way the cap increases enough and we can resign him and Markov. But if it is a choice between the two, then there is no choice. Markov stays.

This is not considering Souray wants to be closer to his daughter in LA.

  6. Yes, the pejorative sense of the word is bellow average, however, the actual meaning is average, or rather, middle.

If you are interested in words, that is, if you are a logphile, make sure to consider the etymology of the word. It will always point you towards the intended meaning of the word in its origin.

you have made some pwogwess with the language of the infidels, comrade Kim...

but you must hit the books hah-dah. :P

I don't agree with pay cuts for p*ss-poor 'scoring' forwards. But I wouldn't mind seeing Samsonov and Ryder pulling a couple of punitive shifts at the hot-dog stand.
