  1. Kostitsyn seems to develop well. He's been an offensive treat against Buffalo and Boston. He's gaining confidence in the big league. We definitly have a future first line winger IMO. A future point-per-game player.

Don Lever seems to be a good development coach, even for offensive minded player. He managed to make defensively responsible players of Kosty and Gravbovsy, while letting them express their offensive instincts (they've been over a point per game since december playing together)

  2. The big fat idi0t Rejean Tremblay bashes Gainey again :

    http://www.cyberpresse.ca/article/20070303...5128/CPSPORTS01

Man I hate that guy. He was at "Au-dessus de la mêle" on Radio-Canada this week. Man he is so biaised against Gainey. He's pissed off because Gainey doesn't gives a $hit about the media. Previous DG were influencable, but Gainey isn't. If he doesn't want to talk to them, he doesn't do it, final. Gainey is showing those "know-best" journalist that he's the one in charge, no matter what they say or write.

  3. I blame Kovalev for the slump. He tried to do too much for the team by playing hurt and made himself next to useless by doing it. That void he created in the lineup hurt our team alot. Since coming back, he has played how we expect him to play.. he can turn, he can shoot.. he makes those moves that can get him into scoring position. He's exactly what the team needs... he just has to realise that if he's huurt and he can't do what we need of him.. then he's hurting us.

Yep Kovalev plays good hockey since he's back

  4. I entirely agree with The Chicoutimi Cucumber...

IMO Gainey often deliberatly gives vague answers to the media, like when he said he'd "probably give a call" to the Carolina GM to inquire about Jack Johnson...

I don't think Gainey has much respect for the journalists, who for the majority have their opinions guided by their emotions instead of reason...

IMO, it's in spring 2009 that we'll be able to BEGIN to evaluate Gaineys plan.

  5. Man, Kovalev considers Carbonneau as racist against the russians... I hope this is not the case... Or we'll loose Markov...

Nonetheless I consider that Carbo is giving Perezoghin alot of oppotunities to prove himself. So maybe this is just Kovalev's biaised perception...

Or this article was made up...

He also says that the team spirit is bad and people are selfish... That'd explain much...

What did Kostitsyn said that was inciendiairy??

  6. A lot of stars were not projected as such when they were drafted. Zetterberg (210th), Datsyuk (171th), Savard (91th), Visnovski (118th), Lidstrom (53rd) and Vokoun (226th) are good examples. Brière and St-Louis weren't even drafted.

We just have to hope that our scouts will do a nice job (which I think they do, seeing our low picks such as Halak and S. Kostytsin developing so well)

  7. I guarantee you that if Gainey said "we need to move in this direction" and made some moves...then some people would disagree and some would agree but they would be arguing about if we're moving in the right direction.

Not making a move was also chosing a direction: that direction is 2009. So the choice, IMO, was to not sacrifice prospects for immediate help, and not sacrifice players that might help us in the near future. From a developmental perspective, we have better chance to make the playoffs with Souray. Even if we make only one round and lose in 5 games against Buffalo, that means more playoff experience for the key young players like Komi, Higgins, Lats and others.

Moreover, most fans and media people saw the trade deadline as THE moment of crucial decision. IMO that crucial moment is this summer: the entry draft brings alot of trade opportunities (we have 2 first round pics!) and the free agency will be very important for us this summer as the players we'll sign will be with us for the fatidic 2009 spring.

  8. We need a good 2nd line center OR, as you said, a better 1st line center... but not because Koivu isn't adequate in that role.

A part of my point was that Saku's getting older... And all these injuries and sickness will claim their hold on him sooner or later. IMO he'd make a tremendous second line center.

If your first line center is Koivu, you're an 8-seed. If he's your second line center, then you have the depth of a cup contender (according that you have the same depth at the other positions - this isn't our case on the D)

Plekanec, IMO is a 3rd line center

That's what I tought this fall, but since january, he's been playing like a second line center. We'll see if he can keep putting up points for the rest of the season...

But still if Koivu is 2nd and Pleks is 3rd, we're in buisness!

  9. We will do better this time. We began to make good drafts in 2001.

Before 2001 very few of our first round pick became NHLer, but since 2001 its very good: Higgins, Komi, Kosti, Perez (Chipchura, Price and Ficher are still developing).

    I trust Trevor Timmins.

  11. Do we really need a second line center?

Next year we could have Koivu, Grabovski, Plekanec and Lapierre

And that Urquart is developing well and could be called in case of injuries (that's a guy with a huge frame!)

IMO, we have 3 second line center (Koivu, Grab, Plek)

The problem I see is that we don't have a FIRST line center. Koivu's getting older, and he's never been able to put up the points of a premier first line center - be it because of injuries, poor linemates or lack of size or whatsoever. I hope bob'll try to trade / sign a first line center, like Brière.

On the wings it's gonna be good. We'll have Higgins, Rider, Kovalev, Samsonov, Lats, Kosty, Perezhogin (I still think this guy is a late bloomer), Johson (that Johnson had over 50 points in the 2 last seasons with Phoenix...) and the always intense Bégin. I'm quite ok with that crew.

But there are IFs : Sammy needs to get back to what he used to be (a 25 goal scorer), Kovalev need put up points once more, Perez and Kosty need to show their talent.

Moreover, I'd not say no to another power foward, or at least to a gritty winger that ends seasons with as many bodychecks than shots on goal...

  12. is he better than ribeiro? everything considered? I'm not sure.

I'm inclined to think that he is better than Ribs. I've seen only 3 Caps games this year but I must say Zubrus impressed me. He plays with confidence, and has the will to put the puck in the net. I touht he was making is points because of Ovechkin, but in the few games I've watched, I've seen him create his own opportunities.

He's also quite bigger than ribs, and seems to have finaly learned to use that huge frame the North American way...

But he seeks a long-term (5 years) contract... so I hope we'll scout him very seriously if we're to sign him this summer.

  13. Sometimes a couple of ranks mean nothing. Last year the habs traded down to draft 20th instead of 16th because they knew that the guy they wanted, Fisher, would still be available... That 2nd round pick we got in return concretized in Mathieu Carle... :)

By the way, it was with san jose that we swaped pics. We also claimed Traverse from them and traded him for Biron afterwards, and the we sent them Rivet... Bob seems to have friends in SJ

  14. New rumor: Dainus Zubrus (who was just traded from Was to Buf) will be UFA this summer. He said he'd consider seriously signing with Montreal. He said his wife (who is from quebec) would be very happy to come back in Quebec. Zubrus also told the CP that he was told that the Canadiens inquired about him to the Caps GM a few days before the deadline...

Will Gainey try to land Zubrus? I guess he'd make a good second line center.

    He's 6'4" and 226 pounds...

The only problem is that he lacks consistency...

He's not a Datsyuk or Brière, but we need a plan B (or C)...
