  1. I liked White too, but a team can't keep everybody in the line up. There are a lot of players like Ryan White in the NHL, management should be able to find a replacement rather easily. We need better players for the first two lines to become a real force. It's a lot harder to find. Let's give MB more time.

  2. The last trades made before the deadline were not really productive for this team. I include the one for Petry, because I believe we were already strong enough at that position with Gonchar, Beaulieu, Pateryn and Tinordi.

Same thing with guys like Smith-Pelly, Mitchell and Lynch. No improvement what so ever, and we gave draft picks and a good hockey player (Sekac). I understand the idea behind the trades, but the results are disappointing so far.

IMO our real weakness was at the top six level. If there was nobody available to help at this level, MB should have sit on his hands. We would still have Sekac in the line up. I bet that he would make a better option than Smith-Pelly on the first line. MB could also have made an offer for Jagr. He might not be half the player he used to be, but it's still a lot more than a Smith-Pelly.

Having said that, I still like MB a lot. You can't blame him for trying too hard. Let's hope that he will learn from the experience and this year's mistakes won't be too costly.

  3. I suspect that's a message being sent. Speaking of messages being sent, Weise hasn't played since taking the two penalties.

Without getting into the whole debate again, every coach has a system. No coach just draws a giant question mark on the white board in the room for a game plan. Some nights it may seem like it but perception isn't reality in that regard.

We would not stand where we are if we had not a system. That's for sure.

  4. Bossy also explained that in the NHL you can't take your time to shoot. If you do, the goalie has the time to cover the crease or a defenseman will interfere somehow with the shot. Your release has to be real fast. It's more instinctive than anything. Some players have the ability to hit the corners, but they have incredible ability and therefore are very few. Most of the guys in the NHL, IMO, should concentrate on shooting fast and hitting the net.

  5. Mike Bossy was the guest yesterday night at Dave Morissette's show, after the game. The best scorer of all time IMO had some very interesting comments about the Habs and the game in general nowadays. He said that the goalers and the systems in place were the main reasons for the low scoring in the NHL. It's very difficult to score, because five players are defending the net almost all the time and that a large percentage of the shots are blocked or deflected.

The most interesting point however was that in his time his main objective when he was shooting was to hit the net. He did not really aim for any particular point, except maybe between the legs of the goaltender which is in the centre of the net anyway. He was extremely frustrated when he missed the net altogether.

Well, IMO Bossy has a good point, and one the coaches could learn from. Yesterday night I don't know how many shots missed the net, but it was a lot. I think it is highly unproductive and that the coaching staff should address this lack of efficiency. Of course, goaltenders are hard to beat, but a shot that they don't have to block should be counted as a mistake, as much as a turn over IMO. The Habs are certainly not an offensive powerhouse, but they would do better if they hit the net more often when they have a good opportunity to shoot. That's not a very a complicated message to send to the players. Stop trying to hit a small spot, just shoot on the goal, and fast.

  6. I love how the announcers talk about Price. Everything he does becomes magnified through the prism of his supreme excellence; just as every pass from a Crosby is framed as a manifestation of his supreme skill, so is every save from Price. In short, they talk about him in the rarified way they reserve for bona-fide superstars. It's great to hear a Hab be spoken of that way, after 20+ years of it not happening.

It all depends if the team can win a Cup or two while he is in his prime. If it does, there is no doubt in my mind that the odds are good that one day his jersey will float in the Bell Centre. I sure hope that this day will come.

  7. Nine more games to go. If all goes well, Price will finish the season with 43 to 45 wins. Right now he is in the lead on all statistic fronts. The Vézina and Jennings trophies are very realistic achievements. I also believe that the Hart is almost a lock, and the Ted Lindsay a strong possibility. But I wish of a better reward for Carey: the Connie Smythe to go along the Stanley Cup.

Halak was good, but Gainey and Gauthier knew what they were doing when they drafted that young man and chose to keep him with the team when he was not playing yet to his full potential.

    What a player!

  8. Well so far I am really glad MB didn't pay any of the crazy prices out there. Although I still see him pulling off something.

My feeling is that MB is done with his shopping. And I believe that it's the best course.

IMO the only trade that would make sense would be for a top notch centre, and those are not available. I would like to see Eric Staal in Montreal, but it won't happen. I would be ready to give Plekanec or DD, with Eller and a draft pick anytime for Staal.
