  1. While searching in my library today, I found Jean Béliveau's memoirs, a book my father had in his own library when he passed away three years ago at the age of 95. I had read the book and wanted to read it again, but was astonished to discover something I did not recall having seen on my first read: a personal signature of Jean to my father in the opening page of the memoirs. I guess that I simply did not remember. Anyhow I am glad I still have this book. It's a great souvenir of both my father and Mr. Béliveau.

  2. You must be off your meds if you compare Beliveau or Mario to a McCarron?

More like a Ian Shultz, Andrew Conboy or a Turner Stevenson.

I see that you don't understand what I meant. You obviously are not aware that, on a rhetorical basis, sometimes it is good to exaggerate a comparison, to make a point. Let's forget about it. Not important anyway.

  3. One thing the US team will not lack is size and grit amongst forwards. They will likely have the biggest, heaviest forward group of any contender with guys like Tuch, Hayden, Fasching, Erne, all in the power forward mould.

That said, I pencilled him in for a fourth line role in my WJC US preview.

McCarron is also 6'5 225 now. Don't know where the 6'6 came from? but the 225 is part of his slimming down last summer and you can see that he is faster and more endurance this year. He also actually has more strength at this weight, and more balance. I think fitness was a huge thing he was lacking last year.

6'5 or 6'6. Will you discredit me for one inch over 77 or 78 for the whole package???
  4. You think being bigger = better?

If playing defense it can be moreso, but up front skill and speed trump size; but, do hope he can make team and be the 'bull in a chinashop' type wrecking ball.

Remember Jean Béliveau, Mario Lemieux, Eric Lindros or Jeff Carter? With a bit of speed, good hands and strenght, a big hockey player is like a tank. Very tough to play against. McCarron is not there yet, of course, but he has the potential to become a very effective hockey player. Don't worry about him. He will make it and you will like him. A lot.

  5. For myself it was numerous others (like about 30 kids) who I would of taken before McCarron. And still dont have warm fuzzy feeling he will ever dress as a regular Hab.

I have seen him a couple of times at the Habs training camp. Against other NHL teams too. I don't have the shadow of a doubt that he will be playing with the big club. He is the kind of player who will look a lot better once he plays with professionnals. His size is such an asset. And contrarily to what a lot of people think, he is fast, has good hands and very acceptable hockey sense. If he remains healthy, he is a sure bet to make the team. Maybe as soon as next season.

  6. Most, if not all of their invites, have been nothing short of impressive with their respective teams this season. I still wouldn't give him good odds of making the team. Just glancing at their roster quickly, I think he'll be vying for a fourth line role which would make him far from a lock.

There aren't too many 6'6, 235 lbs guys among the other players. His size should be considered as an asset for the team.

  7. This one may be a bit of surprise considering he was cut from summer camp but Michael McCarron will be at the USA WJC camp. 17 forwards were invited.

He should make the team. He has been nothing short of impressive with his team this season. What is very good is that he looks comfortable playing centre. What if he became the big centre we have been craving for so long?

  8. Sad news for sure. He was my hero. I remember when I was a kid, I wrote him a letter to have his autograph. He sent a B&W picture with his handwritten signature. I wish I still had it. A classy man if there was ever one. Thank you for everything Jean!

  9. I don't think Bourque earned a place. Hell, the habs should have tried hard to move him at the draft or the summer, instead of hoping that Bourque's playoff performance was anything but a mirage. In the summer, someone may have been stupid enough to trade for him.

He clearly earned his place in the playoffs. Same think with Moen, who got an extension from MB. The coach is not an idiot. If he wants to keep his job he has to give a fair chance to those who are already signed for serious money. They got their chance, they blew it. MT has gotten rid of his deadwood without much of a fuss. Somehow you have to concede that he has been strategic with a delicate situation.

  10. I don't really get all the hate on Eller. Is there really anything wrong with what he is or will turn out to be? Yes, we all want him to be that big, scoring center prospect but if he is just a 3rd line center who can play some defense and chip in with a bit of offence, then that's great. Just because someone plays on the 3rd line and isn't putting up certain numbers doesn't mean he isn't an effective part of the team.

I agree with you. Eller is at his place on the 3rd line. I suspect that the Plekanec Army is trying to derail the discussion about the no. 14 ability to centre one of the first two lines by blaming either DD or Eller. Let's face it: we are weak at centre. Eller and Malhotra are doing good at their position, but we are asking too much of DD and Plekanec.
  11. Whoooo! putting cart before horse there Sparky.

Don't get too excited because of 2 weeks of good play vs pimple-faced teenagers.

But, yes is nice start to season and encouraging.

I have seen him twice, last year and this year, at training camp against an NHL team, and liked what I saw very much. Not much of a doubt, in my mind, that he will be all right when he will play with better teammates.

  12. He's going to be in Hamilton. There's no room for him. He may be fast, but that's honestly it. Did he even get a point in the last 30 games of the year in MTL.

He is not only fast. He has got good hockey sense, is a decent playmaker and understands very well the defense. He is a big upside on Moen IMO. As for Sekac, I firmly believe that he brings a lot more on the ice than Bourque. It's just a matter of time before both of them get more ice time. The reason: even though we have a god season so far, Therrien and Bergevin are no fools; they know the stats as well as we do. We simply don't score enough goals. Let's make room to faster, skillful players.

  13. A bad end to the first with Gilbert blowing a tire to allow the Oilers goal. Then Hall dives and the refs give PK a penalty. Then there was. The Patch goal which should have counted. Habs outplayed the Oilers though in the period.

The ref is trying to steal the show. Doing a good job so far.

  14. From what I've read, the team thinks Eller and Bourque have just been really unlucky.

They had a few goals disallowed and haven't been lucky so far. It's still very early in the season and we are winning. Last year, MT was very patient with DD and Pax. No reason not to be a bit patient at this time.
