John Ferguson Sr. has passed away at the age of 68.
The five-time Stanley cup winner succumbed to his second bout with cancer on Saturday at his home in Windsor, Ontario.
''On behalf of my entire family, I'd like to thank the many friends, professional colleagues, medical personnel, and hockey fans who have supported us through this difficult time. Your expressions of sympathy have helped bring comfort to us. Your kind words have helped strengthen us.'' John Ferguson Jr. said in a statement.
''My father battled cancer with the same spirit in which he played the game of hockey. He showed courage, strength, class and tremendous character. He had deep appreciation for the support he'd received from so many people beginning with his initial diagnosis. My father's spirit will continue to live on in all of us whose lives he touched.''
As a player, Ferguson skated in 500 regular season NHL games, all with the Montreal Canadiens. He scored 145 goals and added 158 assists.
He developed a reputation as one of the toughest players in the NHL, collecting 1214 penalty minutes over his career.
Ferguson enjoyed great playoff success with the Canadiens, capturing Stanley Cup championships in 1965, 66, 68, 69 and 71. He netted 20 goals, added 18 assists and recorded 260 penalty minutes over 85 games.
Ferguson remained in hockey after his playing days were over. He spent time as both a coach and general manager for the New York Rangers and Winnipeg Jets. He also served as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the '72 Summit Series.

I'm still bitter towards Souray...maybe that will change over time because after all...he did play some good hockey for us and he did stick up for his team mates while he was here....one of my favorite Souray moment was when he went after that gutless little puke Colby Armstrong......it was so funny because you could see the fear in Armstrong's face....I thought for sure he was going to sh*t himself.....even though I'm bitter towards Souray...I will miss him.

I like to thank Sheldon for the lies he told all season long....you know the ones I'm talking about "I love playing in Montreal" " I want to retire a Montreal Canadien" "I want to resign with the Canadiens" etc, etc......thanks for getting my hopes up Sheldon...you sure are a piece of work.
I couldn't agree more. If he wanted to leave fine, but then don't feed all that crap.
Class A Asshole
what did you want him to say, "I hate it here and want to leave"?. he's more than half a country closer to his daughter, bringing home way more money on a post tax basis, got an extra year, AND IS MOVING HOME. saying he wants to stay does not mean he had to take a crappier deal to stay.
you guys have absolutely no clue what happened in negotiations (think maybe, just maybe, Bob was an a**hole?). in any event, he played and acted like a man.
the truth would have been nice.....he could have said "thanks for standing by me for the past 7 years but I think its time to move on." I would of at least respected that.
-
and btw, When Souray returns to Montreal as an Oiler...I hope he gets the same treatment Theodore got when he came back to the Bell Centre as an Ave.
-
trade the only sniper we got and the first one we've had in years???? smart move.

Today McDonald's Canada announced the signing of UFA Sheldon Souary to a one year $8.50 per hour (40 hours a week) contract. A McDonald's Executive said that "we are proud to have Sheldon as a part of our team...he will provde some much needed leadership and toughness for our weaker employees who have trouble dealing with angry customers." When ask about the signing Souray said "its was never about the money....I will take pride in wearing the uniform of a great organization like Mikey D's.....btw, I can flip an awesome burger."

:can:

I can't get over the fact that the Souray camp never made a counter offer to Gainey...after all, the team and fans stood by him when he missed a full season due to injury and on top of that the team and fans stood by him when he was having trouble in his personal life.....so this is the thanks we get!!! to hell with you Sheldon.
-
Babs must have been drunk or high (maybe both) when he agreed to that contract.
-
Yeah then we could give Souray 6million and we could watch that clown bumble and stumble his way to another -28 (or whatever it was)
Markov is a franchise defenseman, you don't get that quality of player for nothing and you certainly dont keep one for nothing.
$3.5 Million a season ain't nothing...where I come from thats a damn fine living. As for Souray...I didn't say he should get $6 Million.....I would offer Souray $4 - $4.5 Million a season.
-
$5 million a season for Markov is way to much IMO......if it was up to me I would have offered $3.5 - $4 million a season...if he didn't want it then he could hit the road.
-
I would like to thank Carbo for mishandling and mistreating Perezhogin....Carbo didn't like Perezhogin for some stange reason and now hes gone...I hope hes happy....Rivet pooped in Carbo's corn flakes and he got traded away for next to nothing.....I don't know about the rest of you but Spidey is starting to think that Carbo is the next coming of Mario Tremblay.
