Price gets call over Huet for Panthers

Canadiens head coach Guy Carbonneau announced today that Carey Price will start tomorrow vs. the Florida Panthers at the Bell Centre, getting the nod for his good work of late.
Cristobal Huet, who backed up Price Saturday vs. Toronto, will fill the same role tomorrow, and he isn't overjoyed with the idea, having been widely believed to be getting the start. But Carbonneau wants Huet to get another few days of practice before returning to action, having sat out the past six games with a groin injury.
Guillaume Latendresse practised at Verdun with his teammates, but will be a game-time decision, having suffered what's reported to have been an upper-body injury last Thursday in Philadelphia. Defenceman Patrice Brisebois practised as well, rehabbing a shoulder injury, but left early and won't be in the lineup.

Leafs slayer Price starts 6th straight

The Canadiens are a fearsome 10-5-1 on the road - fourth-best in the NHL - and a frightening 5-6-4 at home - third-worst.
So tonight, they'll try their luck in a game on neutral ice (7 p.m., CBC, RDS, CJAD Radio-800).
It's always like this when the Toronto Maple Leafs come to Montreal, hundreds of rowdy blue-and-white supporters filling the upper reaches of the Bell Centre and creating nearly as much racket as Canadiens fans.
This won't necessarily hurt the alleged home team, inexplicably winless in six straight, two by shootout, on Montreal ice.
The Canadiens accurately point out that, technically, this is not a losing streak, with a point earned when teams are tied after 60 minutes. But in spirit, a defeat tonight would equal the Habs' record for futility, with the 2000-01 edition having lost seven in a row at the Bell Centre. No. 5 in that skid was a gruesome 6-1 loss to the Maple Leafs.
Not that any of this bad karma was felt in the dressing room yesterday after Thursday's feel-good 4-1 victory over the Flyers in Philadelphia.
Most hands were on deck for a noon-hour practice in Verdun, save Andrei Kostitsyn and Guillaume Latendresse. Both were taking therapy days after being dinged against the Flyers, Kostitsyn apparently by a bodycheck and Latendresse perhaps after a late-game shot-block.
Defenceman Patrice Brisebois also didn't skate, listed as day-to-day with a right shoulder injury.
Should Kostitsyn or Latendresse not be ready to go after this morning's optional game-day skate, it's possible Michael Ryder, not dressed for two of the last three games, will be reinserted into the lineup.
A body or two could also be flown in from the Hamilton farm, with Duncan Milroy, Matt D'Agostini and Jonathan Ferland on the shortlist.
Carey Price will make his sixth consecutive start in goal and will be backed up by Cristobal Huet, should the latter get the green light from doctors after missing the last five with a groin injury.
Price has beaten the Maple Leafs in the last two meetings between the clubs, allowing only six goals on 86 shots, but typically plays down the feat.
"Some guys play well against certain teams, but that can change in a hurry," he said.
The why-can't-you-win-at-home? horse was dragged out for another whipping yesterday, and neither head coach Guy Carbonneau nor captain Saku Koivu had the answer.
"It's hard to understand," Carbonneau said. "The perfect balance (of home and road) would be fun. Last year, we were better at home and this year, we just can't put a win together.
"Maybe not in all six (winless) games, but sometimes we tried too hard and made mistakes, instead of being patient like we were in Philadelphia. At home, we try to push things too hard.
"Against Tampa (at home last Tuesday) and the Flyers, we played five good periods out of six. For me, that's encouraging for (tonight)." Said Koivu: "If we don't score on the first power play or in the first 15 minutes (on the road), it seems we're willing to stick with our game plan. We're not afraid to see what will happen later.
"But at home, if we don't score right away, we kind of slip away from the little things that make us successful on the road." Koivu, who hasn't scored since Nov. 17, said: "It's a concern, and something you want to get out of as quickly as possible.
"On the positive side, there have been chances. You can't feel sorry for yourself. ... I've been in this situation before and I'm hoping there's a solution. Hopefully (tonight) we can talk about my goal." The Leafs arrived in town in today's wee hours, having blanked the Thrashers 4-0 last night in Atlanta. Tonight's match is Toronto's second in a seven-game stretch on the road.
The Leafs have won six of their last seven games, after a dismal stretch had so-called Leaf Nation calling for the heads of GM John Ferguson Jr. and head coach Paul Maurice, and massive personnel changes.
"Sometimes you need an absurd amount of pressure to get things going," Maurice told Associated Press this week.
"So absurd that you think the entire game of hockey will be called off based on the way the Leafs are playing. It helps put things in perspective." The Canadiens and Leafs have split their four games this season, all decided by a single goal - Toronto has won in regulation and overtime, Montreal in overtime and a shootout.

Anderi Kostitsyn and Guillaume Latendresse skipped practice. Kostitsyn took a therapy day after banging up his R knee Thursday in Philadelphia. Coach Guy Carbonneau would not disclose Latendresse's injury. Both will try to skate Saturday morning but if one or both cannot play, Carbonneau says Duncan Milroy, Matt D'Agostini and Jonathan Ferland are on standby in Hamilton. Carey Price will make his sixth straight start Saturday against Toronto. He has beaten the Leafs twice in a row and will face them for the first time at the Bell Centre. Habs call up Sergei Kostitsyn
MONTREAL – The Canadiens announced Wednesday that forward Sergei Kostitsyn has been recalled from the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League.
Third-leading scorer among AHL rookies, Kostitsyn leads the Bulldogs with 22 points (6 goals, 16 assists) in as many games (22), with a plus-2 rating, 18 penalty minutes and a .180 shooting percentage.
A seventh round pick by the Canadiens in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Kostitsyn tallied 131 points (40 goals, 91 assist) in 59 games with the OHL London Knights in 2006-07.
Kostitsyn will join the Canadiens in Philadelphia for Thursday’s game against the Flyers.

Struggling Habs work on special teams
The Canadiens have been awful at home. Perhaps a one-game stint away from Montreal will help.
The team had a quick practice in Montreal on Wednesday before heading off to Philadelphia for Thursday's matchup with the Flyers. The Habs took care of a little housekeeping before hitting the road as they recalled Sergei Kostitsyn, brother of Andrei, from Hamilton of the AHL.
The younger Kostitsyn leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 22 points in 22 games. He is expected to join the team in time for Thursday's game against the Flyers.
The recall was an attempt to shake up a complacent team that is mired in a six-game losing streak at home, with the boobirds at the Bell Centre coming out in full force.
Even with the team's 9-5-1 road record, the Canadiens know the crowd isn't going to be any friendlier at the Wachovia centre.
"We've had struggles at home, and it's definitely not easier going on the road," centre Kyle Chipchura told TSN on Wednesday. "Especially in Philadelphia where they (the fans) are a boisterous group. But we just have to get our focus on the game tomorrow."
The Habs are coming off a 3-2 shootout loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning - a game where they looked flat until the last 20 minutes of regulation. Chipchura, like his teammates hope to use that third period as a template for the full 60 minutes.
"I think we've made some strides on our game last night but we should keep building on it," he said.
"Philly is a tough team and tough to play against, so we just have to be prepared."
The two teams met at the Bell Centre on Nov. 1 in a game that the Canadiens dominated. They played a complete game against Daniel Briere and the Flyers, scoring two power play goals and a three-on-one shorthanded goal in a convincing 5-2 win.
That being said, the team devoted 20 minutes of Wednesday's practice to the power play and penalty killing. The latter of the two was especially the focus as the Canadiens started Tuesday night's game in 27th in the league. They have given up nine power play goals in 25 chances through their last six games.
Making things worse for the Habs is the fact that two of their more versatile and defensive players will be missing. Centre-winger Bryan Smolinski is out six weeks with a sprained right knee, while winger Steve Begin will miss two to three weeks with a separated left shoulder.
Defenceman Patrice Brisebois is also nursing a shoulder injury and did not accompany the team to Philadelphia. He is day-to-day.
Forward Alex Kovalev skipped practice on Thursday for therapy. He said he hurt his wrist in Tuesday night's loss to the Lightning but is expected to play Thursday in Philadelphia.
Goaltender Cristobal Huet will also travel to Philadelphia, even though he is not available to play. Head coach Guy Carbonneau said Huet needs the practice time, and Carey Price will get the nod in goal.
"He's not available for tomorrow, but he needs to practice and I think he can have a bteer practice with us," he told reporters on Wednesday.
"But he's getting closer - I was on the ice with him yesterday and he looked pretty good. So he'll be ready in the near future. I don't know about Saturday, but soon. Carey's in net tomorrow."
Price will be making his fifth straight start in goal for the Canadiens.
