  1. Did he have to actually play in the Cup-clinching game? Or just be on the roster?

Another question: Two Habs from the 1993 Cup-winning team were still playing pro hockey last season, name them. (Note that I don't classify the LNAH as a pro league, thus excluding Jesse Belanger who played there last year.)

Just on the roster. I feel like you have the answer.

  2. you mean the last Habs player who won the SC on his birthday ?

Yes, as long as it's clear that he won the Cup as a Canadiens player. Didn't want people to think I meant a Hab who may have won a Cup with a different team.

  3. Stastny is an upgrade in every catagory, cept PK maybe??

Stastny is 12th in league on face offs (which is one achilles heal of habs) Thomas is 54th and has been his whole career sub 50%.

Stastny has him in size, he is a NHL average 6'0" and 205lb, Thomas is not even average size.

Stastny has bout same points in over 100 fewer games.

    Stastny is 3 years younger.

Stastny has 3 years with 70-80 points out of his 6 years in league on a shitty team.

I'd respectfully submit a great big "who cares" for most of those stats.

Yes, Stastny's FO% was 6 points better last season. At an average of 20 face-offs per game, that translates into one additional face-off won each game. While it's nice that Stastny wins 11 out of 20 face-offs, I can live with Pleks winning merely 10 out of 20.

Stastny is one inch taller and 7 pounds heavier. Oh my.

As CC pointed out, their point stats have been very similar for the last 3 years, which seems more relevant than their career numbers

Pleks scores his points while also anchoring an excellent penalty kill. Stastny does not.

    Pleks is also significantly cheaper.

Beyond the fact that Stastny is 3 years younger, I don't see the value.

  4. Button's new rankings up. Murray and Trouba at 12 & 13 respectively... He's either or stupid or trying to draw attention to himself.

Are those the new rankings? That's where they sat for the April rankings and on TSN it says that his next rankings aren't due until tomorrow (May 15).

  5. All things being equal, face-offs are a nice skill to have, but I would hope it doesn't factor into any decision overly much. Unless you're comparing the best face-off guys in the league to the worst, the difference really isn't as great as it's sometimes made out to be. An average guy like Pleks takes about 20 face-offs a game and wins 10 (50%). A face-off whiz like Konopka wins 57%, which comes out to 11.4 on 20, or just over one extra win per game. So while I'd agree that one extra face-off win per game is not a bad thing, I would never want it to factor into free agent selection more than skating, hitting, or shooting.

  6. There seems to be nothing worse for the habs, at least in the past few seasons, than a road trip in December.

They had some bad Christmas seasons in the past, but that does not apply to the last two years. They closed out last year on a 7-game road-trip, winning 6. The year before finished with 3 road wins (though they lost the 4th road game in January).

  7. I don't see this as a defense. It just proves that Todd has no foresight and always forms his opinions based on what's happening at that moment.

I absolutely agree with this point. I've always disliked his reactionary style and his lack of subtlety or context. I was just making the point that him saying that he thought Price would be a star at the beginning was not an outright lie.

    I make no apologies for his flip-flopping or self-congratulation. I really don't like the guy's writing. :)

  8. This is exactly the situation I was referring to in my Media & Accountability thread. Price succeeds and now Todd flips sides just like that, says he was always on this side and then everyone moves on. Saying that he always thought Price would be great is not only revisionist history, it's a blatant lie.

I don't even read his articles anymore. The more people talk about him, the less likely the chance that he ever loses his job.

To be fair, he does spend much of the article calling himself out for trashing Price recently. And it is true that he used to talk up Price as being a saviour. A quick google search found this nugget from 2007:

"What the Canadiens need, then, is a three- to five-year plan. Build around goaltender Carey Price, who may turn out to have been the most brilliant draft choice of Gainey's career. If Price is the goalie he appeared to be during the world juniors, he could conceivably be another Martin Brodeur or Patrick Roy, a guy who gives you a chance to win it all every year, even when he's backstopping mediocre teams."

That being said, I do find Todd to be a vacillating blowhard with limited writing skills.

  9. And boy, can Weber shoot. We've known this, but it is still nonetheless impressive.

Does anybody have a recent number of his shot-speed? I know he hit 99.2 mph to win the OHL hardest shot competition a couple of years ago, but I'm wondering if he's picked up any speed as he gains muscle and experience.

  10. Your right it is still early to worry and that Gionta is a leader and goal scorer who will eventually find his scoring pace. I'm concerned that giving Gionta the captaincy may be distracting his focus. I also believe that Gionta and Gomez need to play with other players to renew their spunk. I would strongly consider calling up Pulashaj from hamilton and try him with Gomez.

My point is more that I don't think anything really has to change, at least for Gionta to get going. He's getting a ton of good shots. Some times they just don't go in. The last NYI game was a good example of the power of a random deflection. So Gionta only has one goal in his first 36 shots. As an 11% career shooter, he's just as likely to get 5 goals on his next 36 shots and see things average out, without changing a thing in his game...

  11. Regarding the G & G line I believe that they must be split up.

I'm not particularly worried. Gionta has shot around 10% for his career and is currently below 3%. I don't believe he has forgotten how to shoot. Goal scoring is streaky and he's taking good shots. At some point soon, it'll likely average out with him scoring two goals in a game and another couple over a five game stretch. And just like that, he'll be back on pace for 30+...

  12. Hello forum members!

I have just moved to Ottawa for work and, of course, one of my more pressing concerns is finding some good spots to watch the Habs games. In spite of my new geographic location, I have no plans on rooting for the Sens.

So, what are some good bars, pubs or other spots for Habs games in Ottawa?

    Thanks!

I'm a displaced Montrealer who's been in Ottawa for about 10 years. I haven't made a point of looking for bars that give priority to Habs games, as I don't expect to have much success and every single game can be found in HD on TV. That being said, as long as the Sens aren't playing, most bars will automatically default to Habs or at least be willing to put them on if you ask. It may have been a joke, but VanWhelan is right. You'll have much more success if you cross the river and find a bar in Gatineau. It's only a 5 minute drive from downtown Ottawa...

  13. If you ask me, taxes should be exempt from the cap hit. Why should teams suffer because of their jurisdiction's tax policy? Such an exemption would one of those sensible policies - like legalizing drugs, or charging violators a per centage of their income rather than a flat penalty for traffic violations - that will never happen, alas.

More generally, those who condemn Montreal for 'overpaying' on contracts do need to consider the tax hit. Indeed, taxes factored in, even Scott Gomez is not nearly as overpaid as he appears to be...I don't know the exact numbers, but if you're right that Halak would pay an extra million in taxes, say 1.5 for Gomez - that drops his tax-adjusted salary down to 5.5, something like that. Scary to contemplate. But this could also account for Gainey's willingness to take on that contract. He may have simple shrugged and said, 'well, in THIS tax jurisdiction, that's what we'd have had to pay Gomez anyway.'

I've always wondered about the comparative tax rates, but never really checked. So I did now.

The US tax rate on high income earners is 35% -(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Income_tax_in_the_United_States#Year_2010_income_brackets_and_tax_rates)

The Missouri income tax rate is 6% (http://swz.salary.com/salarywizard/layouthtmls/swzl_statetaxrate_MO.html)

For Quebec, the combined federal & provincial tax rates net of federal tax abatement (not sure if there's an abatement in the US) is 48.22% - (http://www.taxtips.ca/taxrates/qc.htm)

So, my understanding would be that in Montreal you're paying 48.22% , while in St.Louis it would be 41%. That would come out to about a $500,000 difference on Gomez' salary and half that for Halak. Still pretty substantial, but not as bad as it's sometimes made out to be.

That doesn't factor in anything else like sales or property tax, cost of living, or a thousand other variables. So it could still swing pretty far in either direction...

  14. For those of us residing in Ottawa - beware. I just had an e-mail conversation with Rogers and they said that they currently have no plans for picking up RDS HD. Obviously there is some political demotivation here as their Ma Bell competition is a significant sponsor of the Habs. If you are a Rogers subscriber, it is in our best interests to pressure Rogers as soon as possible. I subscribe to full package with Rogers and told them point blank that I will switch very quickly if they don't respond positively very quickly. The more Habs fans that pressure, the better the odds that they will bend.

After years of (not so patient) waiting, I let out a little shout of exultation this afternoon. Scanning through the list of August channel changes for Rogers in Ottawa, my eyes fell upon RDS HD. My 743 day hunger strike can finally end...

  15. Why not Lang with Kovalev? I believe those two along with Straka were a unit on the Penguins back in the day, during Kovalev's best season.

    A.Kost-Lang-Kovalev

    Tanguay-Koivu-S.Kost

    Higgins-Plekanec-Tender

    Laraque-Laps-Kosto

Either way, we are officially 3 lines DEEP.

I like Lang with Kovalev, but I see it shaking out like this, taking advantage of existing chemistry:

    Tanguay-Lang-Kovalev

    Kost-Pleks-Kost

    Higgins-Koivu-Latendresse

    Laraque-Lapierre-Kosto/Begin

  16. Go check Detroit "The Stanley Cup Champion's" consistency. The consistency they SHOULD be striving for.

An 11 game bad run is significant. I agree that the Habs really were the most consistent team last year. Unfortunately, they were consistent at a lower level than Detroit played when they weren't tanking it.

  17. If these people had known anything about hockey, they would have put Beliveau at the Top of the list.

I didn't realize that Beliveau started playing in the 21 years since Yzerman joined the league. That's the criteria they say they used...
