  1. Mike's 3 Stars are now on the site: http://www.habsworld...cle.php?id=2439

Good piece, Michael. Had I written the article, I would have said the same about AK46. For him to be out in the final 90 seconds of the game speaks to both his level of play last night and J.M's confidence in him. Love how he got knocked down 2-3 times but didn't back down. (Although I wish he'd drive the net a touch more)

  2. Young ref screwed both calls. First, Subban for diving was a joke.. Then it was his call on the high stick. You could see McCreary (who was at the other end) if anyone saw it... they wouldn't reverse the call).

The quality of reffing in this league is awful. I am at the point I want a coaches challenge on plays that result in a goal.

He dove. Hainsey did not actually grab him, his hand was barely on his shoulder. Scott Gomez was even making fun of him in the penalty box!

  3. I really only focus on sections related to the cap. As salary forfeitures due to suspensions is relevant to the cap, I have to pay attention to that rule. Heck, I should admit I wasn't aware of that rule until this season when the person who runs CapGeek brought it to my attention; after a couple of back and forths, we figured out how it should be interpreted. Without getting into too many details, it's a poorly worded rule that gave me a lot of grief. A quick example is that the CBA states that the player forfeits x salary upon suspension, yadda, yadda, yadda. Pages earlier, it says that salary = cap hit...so why they didn't just say that the player forfeits x cap hit is beyond me. But I digress, I'm sure this isn't exactly riveting reading here (sure wasn't riveting typing...).

I disagree. The only thing remotely riveting about the lockout was all the learning it permitted about the CBA and its intricacies. Of course, as coverage has been more to hockey games and away from hockey business since then, my knowledge has slowly eroded. While I gladly digest books about hockey scouting and strategies, I'm not sure i'm up to stomaching a full review of the CBA. So having someone spell it out for me is, well, nice.

  4. The repeat offender 'definition' is actually only 2 years from the last infraction (for purposes of salary forfeiture), Bertuzzi doesn't fall under that. Of course they say they look beyond that but, well, you know.

And, once again, Brian you pop out some rule I wasn't even aware existed. Seriously, you should write 'The CBA and other NHL rules for Dummies'. I'd buy it, but i'd want a signed copy.

  5. An undersized forward group and a generally undermanned team that already sorely needed help at the wing when the season started. I know this a positivity thread, but really, how is any of this surprising? Granted, getting whopped by the Bruins stings, but beyond that, this slump had to be expected.

  6. Allow me to go off the board and suggest in a perfect world, Tampa Bay in the 4/5 matchup with Pittsburgh sliding to 6th. The Habs match up relatively well against the Bolts; they're not an overly physical team, Roloson (much to the chagrin of my pool team) is starting to falter, and their defence remains iffy at times. And for those who love media hype, there's the Lecavalier-Subban issue as well as the Martin-Boucher debate...though should the Habs lose, we'd be inundated with discussions of whether or not Martin should have been fired to make room for Boucher, despite last year's success.

I had thought about that matchup, but it seems too many variables have to fall in place for it to happen. Regardless, it certainly would be entertaining. Beyond the players and personnel who have worked for both organizations, It's also interesting to note how both teams are often attributed the same qualities: Fast, skilled, not overly physical, players who dive a lot.

  7. I think one answer could be that Recchi, Marchand and any of the other loud mouths are flapping their lips cause they like the sound it makes.

It's such an utterly ridiculous thing to say that there can't be any rational thought behind it.

Beyond that, I think they are a tad emboldened by the Boston media who, for the most part, seem to believe the Bruins can do no wrong. They simply will not call out Recchi for making such an egregious statement. And, with no players available to the media today, no one will have the opportunity to do so.

Believe me, If a Canadiens player had said something so utterly dumb, they would have been lambasted by the press. Mind you, we had a collective cow when Pacioretty said he'd rather play in Hamilton then be a bottom-six forward in Montreal.

  8. Wow. How do you embellish unconsciousness and a damaged vertebrae? And I am sure Dr. Mulder and company were embellishing when they intervened, as they were obviously solely caring about having Chara suspended. Give me a break.

Beyond that, whatever happened to not stirring the pot. Why would Recchi intentionally light a fire under his opposition? Why give Montreal any extra motivation? Personally, if I am Claude Julien, I am none to pleased with these comments from one of my supposed veteran leaders. I would tell him in the future to, well, shut (use your imagination here) up.

  9. Now Recchi is claiming that the Habs were embellishing the injury to get chara suspended. "yeah, he has a broken neck, but he was at the movies 4 days later, so what concussion"...

Wow.. what class... now I am watching TSN interview all the Bruins players about how unfair it is that chara is being made to look bad by the Habs and the Media in Monteal, when it was clearly just an accident and Chara is a saint...

    Source?

Greetings from Switzerland and of course go habs go !

Salut SwissHabs, bienvenue sur notre forum. Toujours content de voir des francophones s'ajouter à notre groupe.

  11. The NHL is being widely praised for the Cooke suspension, and I agree they got it right. But on the other hand, it's just more of a smokescreen to disguise the pathologies of their disciplinary regime. The whole thing is predicated on presuming to have psychic insight into a player's 'intent.' What this means in practice is that if a player is a good old boy, respected around the league as a basically decent fellow (Chara) then he gets a free pass. If a player is actively disliked, why then he gets nailed.

I can't wait until PK Subban inflicts a controversial hit on someone. Judging from the essential arbitrary nature of such a system, where 'justice' is based on personal likes and dislikes, I would expect him to get a fairly stiff punishment, supported by the same pious media frauds who assured us that Chara is a saint and therefore obviously undeserving of even a token suspension for nearly killing someone with a reckless hit. Subban is a jerk, so he deserves it, see?

The entire system works like Don Cherry's mind: axiomatic biases and personal likes and dislikes, dispensed as some sort of Code and Moral Truth.

It will continue to be so until the league defines clear punishment guidelines for certain infractions. I mean, how does Marchand get two games for an elbow behind the head and Cooke gets 14-17 ? The fact that he is a repeat offender cannot fully explain away the 700% longer suspension.

In short, until such guidelines are put in place, it will continue feel like suspension lengths are picked with about the same randomness as lottery balls. And, unlike the lotto balls, there is no charming young lady on TV picking the numbers.

  12. Notwithstanding the Bonneau note as it's already been mentioned, there is that little thing called the 4 Recall Rule that prevents teams from doing just this...heck, we may have finally found a positive for this rule. Assuming the Habs didn't botch the Dawes, Palushaj, and Engqvist recalls, they have 3 recalls left, why burn them on 1-game goons when they may actually need better players later on?

    Ever the pragmatist, Brian.

  13. No offense taken. I posted the link, not because I care about what Marchand thinks, but rather the irony. Kind of a pot calling the kettle black situation.

    Thought it was interesting.

I think it's also a good look into how hypocritical the mind set of the Bruins is. Their game is dirty but they'll keep on playing it.

    Suspensions won't even deter it.

Hey Brenn. Sorry, did not realize you had posted the link to the Marchand Story already.

As for the Bruins opinion on respect and league discipline, all I hear is white noise. Lost of noise. Perhaps they should concern themselves more with not getting whopped by Montreal on a regular basis or not choking 0-3 series leads. But, of course, I digress as usual.

  14. Brad Marchand on Matt Cooke's latest hit: ""He needs to be taught a lesson. He's doing that stuff left, right and center. " (http://sports.espn.g...tory?id=6243524).

Well, that's about as credible as having Cheech and Chong tell teenagers to 'Just say no', isn't it?

On an unrelated note, I wonder if she's had her teeth whitened.......

  15. John Madden, 37, will miss the playoffs for the first time in his career. Sick.

It's unbeliveable that he has never missed them before. Speaks both to him as a player and the organization's he has been with.

There will be an in-person hearing for Matt Cooke's elbow to McDonagh yesterday. Predictions for the length? I don't think he'll get the 10 like some are calling for, I'm guessing 6.

Also, Craig Anderson signs a 4 year extension with the Sens, boy does that trade look great for them now...

Brian, I have to agree with you on the length, although I am hoping for something much harsher then that.

I mean, if Gillies is a repeat offender, then what is Cooke? A career criminal? The fact he has only three suspensions totalling (I believe) ten games is ridiculous. In any case
