  1. I don't mean the coach has to be a yapper Brian, but a few words here and there about the treatment of the team would do more good than JMs stoic robotic answers. I would like to believe the players say publically that the refs don't impact the game, but in the locker room they likely say otherwise, hearing the coach stand up for them publically could go a long way, and to be honest it really can't get ANY worse, so why not give it a shot?

Save for a major blown call, If the coach starts laying part of the blame on the refs each time the game isn't called exactly as he'd want it, then he is taking away some of the responsibility from the players. And I think the last thing JM wants is to create a situation where players feel it is acceptable to allocate blame to anyone but themselves.

As a side note, remember Andre Savard blowing a fuse when Jeff Hackett got tripped up behind his net against the Devils, who then scored? Good memories.

  2. Nope, limited NTC. But the Habs showed extreme reluctance to dump a player making $600k in the minors. They're not going to do so for a guy making $7.5 million. Not to mention that doing so would anger the guys who signed with Montreal particularly because of the Gomez acquisition (Gionta/Cammalleri) but would also be another strike against the organization for potential free agents. Coming from me this sounds odd but it's not just about the money. It's a trade or he stays, Hamilton is not an option for him.

Trade or stays? I'd sooner take the cap-hit involved with a buyout than keep him around. Or, along the same line of thought, put him on re-entry waivers and hope someone grabs him. Really, which ever the team decides works best from a cap and financial perspective. Those savings combined with an increase in the overall salary cap could give the Canadiens the room to add an impact player. And, personally, I am growing weary of watching Gomez not move his feet and take selfish retaliation penalties.

  3. He guarantees a playoff appearance every year, doesn't mean much. Don't forget Mike Zigomanis in your list of unheralded character players, a 6 minute per game 4th line C can make all the difference for that club. :)

Yes, he does make that guarantee every year. And it's funny every time :)

  4. Mike Smith is the "winner" of the who gets waived from Tampa contest with Roloson doing so well with the Lightning (a kind thanks to the forum member who happened to release him mere days before the trade in the pool :)). $2.2 mil is his contract (salary $2.4 M), a pending UFA for those who may be wondering if the Habs ought to claim him and waive Auld. Stortini cleared waivers, somewhere Don Cherry sheds a tear.

Conversely, Don Cherry must be giving three cheers for Mike Brown's three-year extension.

On an slightly unrelated note, anyone remember how Don Cherry, at the beginning of the season, guaranteed the Leafs would make the playoffs in large part to the addition of "character" players like Brown and Tim Brent?

  5. There is Komi, but there is also Sheldon Souray who I miss. However, I don't miss last couple years Souray, but the good ol' Sheldon of 2004.

I still remember watching this game with both my parents. One that I'll remember for a long time. http://www.nhl.com/s...04/GS020627.HTM

Yeah, I remember that one. Another game with Souray I remember is his hat-trick, which included an OT-winner, versus Nashville.

  6. Good to always check it, had the Habs not had a rash of injuries, that would have indeed applied. To answer your questions:

    1) 10 games/30 days, whichever comes first. Player must clear (re-)entry waivers afterwards.

    2) No, see Mathieu Schneider in Phoenix a couple years ago.

Riggghtt.... forgot about the Schneider thingy. Thanks Brian.

  7. Re-entry wouldn't have applied here as it would have qualified as an emergency recall (Habs were down to 11 healthy forwards). Boyd has struggled the last few games though.

See, and I even took the time to look at your Waivers Chart! There is always something with this darn CBA! ;)

While on the topic, two questions:

How long can an emergency recall last? Is it as long as the the injuries last?

Can a re-entry waiver eligible player be called up without going through waivers after the trade deadline?

  8. Won't be a popular choice, but I like it. His offensive game is better than his numbers indicate but I'm assuming he'll play in the same role he did in Hamilton, with others moving up in the lineup to replace Cammalleri/Pacioretty. Only concern for me is that he was the most expensive option with the Bulldogs.

No, it probably won't be. Have to wonder how Dustin Boyd is taking it, especially since he has been on a tear with 11 goals in 14 games on the farm. Then again, he does have to go through re-entry, so I assume he is stuck there for most of the year. In any case am curious to see the sizable Engqvist at work.

  9. And Andreas Engqvist has been called up. He has 14 points in 38 games with Dogs. Other players, like Palushaj, Boyd and Maxwell have better offensive numbers. However, what makes Engqvist an appealing call-up is that he has played in both the Swedish Elite League and the World Championships, meaning that he has a fair bit of experience playing at elite levels versus older, more experienced players.

  10. With a thread recently lauched to discuss the performance of former Canadiens, an Around The Board column dedicated to former Canadien Mike Ribeiro and Brian bringing up Pierre Dagenais in his weekly recap, it felt like a good time to bring up the following quesiton: Which former habs (currently playing professional hockey) do you miss the most?

For me, I would have to say Francois Beauchemin. Even in his pre-Anaheim days, I found his combination of size, grit and good shot to be quite alluring.

How about the rest of you?

  11. Don't forget the Habs were in a playoff run then too. It's easy to say in hindsight that you should have traded them but then you probably don't make the playoffs. Can't have it both ways usually.

Well, yes that is true. But at the time I was always a bit miffed at the notion of trading Rivet but not Souray, who as I recall were both impending UFAs. Imagine, we got Patch and Gorges for Rivet... what return would have Souray, in his prime, yielded?

  12. I know that we are not in the dressing room and we have little to base ourselves on to judge the character of a player. But come on, his (Ribeiro's) overall demeanor came off as very arrogant and his little fake injury in the series against Boston was not exactly sportsmanlike. It is perfectly valid for fans to have an impression of a player's character after watching hundreds of games and countless interviews involving said player.

Anyway, I shouldn't say any more about this whole debate... I might just use it in ATB this week.

  13. On top of what was said a couple of posts earlier, he won't be down there long. He should be on re-entry waivers pretty quickly. Still, 2 full years at $1.875 mil (half his salary) plus the rest of this year won't be too desirable I don't think.

If he was an impending UFA, he could have been an interesting re-entry pickup for the Habs considering their injury situation. However, between the length of his contract and his complaining, I wouldn't bother either.

Oh, and since this is a rumour thread, thought it was interesting to see Eklund mention Frolov's name in relation to the Habs mere days (or should I say hours) before it was announced he was out for the season. Finally that little rumour will be put to rest.

  14. We must still have some Markov money left?

I would assume so, especially since Wiz's price tag is well under Markov's $5+ million. Mike Commodore hit waivers today, but at $3.75 million I doubt he can be considered a serious option unless he goes through re-entry waivers.

  15. With the Canadiens going on their longest road-trip of the season, the following seven games can certainly be considered key in determining if the Habs are true contenders. While the term "statement game" is perhaps an overused concept, this definitely is a statement stretch.

So, what do you think, how many games will the Canadiens win on their road trip?

  16. I imagine that one of the following will transpire

1 - O'Byrne will smoke one of our players, and everyone will bemoan his loss, "Why did we get rid of this guy?"

2 - O'Byrne will shoot the puck over the glass, and Montreal will score on the ensuing powerplay, leading to everyone celebrating his trade.

    or

    3 - Both.

    4. He scores in his own net?

    Okay, maybe not...

Oh, and game preview is up: http://habsworld.net/article.php?id=2311

  17. See this stuff isn't reported in the english media.

I'd be more believing in exact accounts, not that I don't believe you, just saying, it seems off from what I've seen from PK.

I can buy that his teammates do not take to well to some of his behaviours, but beyond that I do side with Bar a tad here. He showed up to rookie camp when, in reality, he could have earned a spot regardless. He certainly says the right things and always seems to be most pleased with his teammates successes (think of when Eller scored his first goal... Subban looked almost happier than him!).

Then again, it's RDS and it's l'Antichambre (aka 110% light). So, euh, I'll get my salt shaker if you don't mind.

Finally, in the shameless self promotion category, the Subban conversation is front and centre in this week's ATB: http://habsworld.net/article.php?id=2300

Come on, you had to see that plug coming....

  18. Ok back to rumours...

My question... and as much as I my heart wants a yes my head says NOOO.... but come trade deadline (or before even), would you see it as a bad thing if we acquired AK 27, AGAIN!.... For the remainder of the season and playoffs?

It's been floated about and, ever since the Ottawa game, I have been pondering the option. Frankly, one could argue that such a move makes a fair bit of sense. Kovalev's playoff numbers are more than decent, his heart is still somewhat in Montreal and is familiar with the environment. Plus, he could likely be had for a low draft pick as a late season rental. Having said all of that, his return could prove to be quite an unwelcome distraction.

  19. Over 7 minutes of PP time and nothing to show for it, that hurts. Gomez is absent from the bench as well. I have the TSN feed, they're not sure what's going on, did they mention anything on RDS?

He's injured. Not sure what it is, but he saw the therapist at the end of the first and only played two shifts in the second before heading back to the dressing room.

  20. I found it shocking because he hasn't played bad, he's been producing and IF he was not a rookie this would never have happened, and I think it's not fair. His 1-2 mistakes in the Oilers games pale in comparrision to the rest of the habs blue line this season, and I believe the habs are a better team with him in the lineup than not in the lineup.

It's not about only 1-2 mistakes versus the Oilers. The fact is, his play had been deteriorating somewhat of late. He has a tendency to hold on to the puck too long at times and gets many shots blocked. In fact, his 29 missed shots lead all blueliners. As far as production is concerned, in spite of playing an average 3:44 powerplay minutes per game, Subban has only 2 even-strength points in his last 15 games.

Nitpicking? Perhaps. No doubt Subban is immensely talented and has elite d-man potential. But he is not elite yet and has much to learn. Taking a step back and gaining some perspective can only be beneficial for him.

  21. And Weber is a part of this team's future if he earns it, as well. Just because he doesn't have Subban's upside doesn't make him disposable or somehow a problem for P.K.

Weber has been toiling in the minors for some time now, had an amazing start to the year in Hamilton and has fully earned a prolonged look in the big league (playing his natural position). Plus, having him gain some comfort at the NHL level can only be beneficial down the road. After all, at one point, the aging Gill, Spacek or Hamrlik will need a night or two off.

As a side note, I find we (being Montreal media, fans, writers etc.) are making a slightly big deal out of this. Subban is young, has much still to learn and has been making mistakes. Boiled down to the simplest point, this story really is just "Rookie gets benched". And, I can't help but wonder why this is so surprising or shocking to some.
