  1. I'm not so sure that he couldn't handle being thrown into the fire, I think playing the wing may have done that to him. He does look more comfortable as a whole though, that's for sure.

And, somehow, Picard seems to pair up very nicely with both of the Habs younger blueliners. For all the talk of what to do with Hamrlik, Gorges, Gill and Markov come season's end, if he continues his solid play, Picard will have to be part of that discussion as well.

  2. Will Price lose his good luck charm? He's shaving off his mustache before tomorrow's game. Will the Buffalo game by the end of the streak? Hope not.

Unrelated to the Buffalo game but not new thread worthy, Martin Brodeur will not be available for Thursday's game against the Devils.

Shame he shaved it. It fit well with his whole Cowboy persona.

I've had a mustache for going on 10 years (and I'm only 24), never had the food build-up, smelling, or itching issues.

You have a mustache. Can't say that's how I pictured you!

As for me... let's say that I would need some time before it moved from somewhat rough "kiwi hair" to a full blow 'stache

  3. Glad that the game when the puck has a hard time going in Price helps us so we dont need more than 1. I thought Komi signed with Toronto btw...

I have a feeling we will be dining out on Komisarek's pass for a few days. Wonderful.

All around, though, it was a solid game for the Habs. Even if most didn't score, the top forwards looked really good tonight. Andrei Kostitsyn has been a pleasant surprise this year as well, he gets involved physically much more than I have seen in the past.

As a side note, boy does Gustavsson allow a lot of bad rebounds. He has almost zero control after a save.

Oh, and by the way, don't forget to check out Brian's 3-Stars Recap: http://habsworld.net/article.php?id=2273

  4. That and shitty goaltenders :)

Wait, Sergei Bobrovsky isn't a flash in the pan? Is he?

Let's look at their depth chart for goalies: Bobrosky - Leighton - Boucer

Right, so essentially every team in the Eastern Conference owns them at that position. And no, I do not care how well the rookie netminder is playing. Ask me again in about 60 games and a couple of playoff games. Until he proves himself over a long stretch, he seems like nothing but a stopgap solution to the Flyers perpetual goaltending woes.

  5. 100 days on the IR. There aren't 100 games in most teams' season. Bonus laden deals are for high-pick rookies, old players who fit a certain games played criteria, and players who spend almost an entire season (100 days out of 186) on IR. It's a 1 year, bonus contract to allow the player a chance to sign somewhere and prove himself.

I'm sure Brian will post the exact specifics for you.

Mmm... I meant 100 days. Obviously.

And thanks for the answer Seb, even after all these years under the new CBA, some details still elude me. I keep telling myself I should sit down and read it, but can't really bring myself to endure such tedium..

Speaking of which, does anyone know a good resource that gives a comprehensive overview of the agreement. Like a "CBA For Dummies" type thing?

  6. New report says torn ACL + cartilage...still no fancy source named though. :) That'd be a season-ender.

    http://twitter.com/TonyMarinaro/status/4347349153357824

The only worse thing than death is the expectation of it... or something like that. Between 4-6 weeks to 8 months, the reports are really all over the place.

Oh and Brian, why exactly would Markov have to miss 100 games to qualify for a one-year, incentive laden deal? I feel there is some part of the CBA that I am just missing...

  7. How about those Sean Avery antics, eh?

I will say that Smid was looking at Avery, so it wasn't a complete sucker punch. But, no doubt, he was caught off guard. And, given Avery's reputation, I suspect that is just what he wanted. It makes one cringe to think that such a selfish, disrespectful person has the privilege of playing in the NHL and making the money that goes along with it.

Islanders fire coach Scott Gordon. They were terrific early on but injuries (and an overall lack of talent) finally caught up with them; I don't think this is a smart move to say the least. I also certainly didn't see that one coming. Any thoughts on who goes next?

Bridgeport coach Jack Capuano takes over on an interim basis for the rest of the season.

Bravo Islanders, Bravo. I mean, I get firing a coach during a 10-game losing streak, I do. But a young, rebuilding (when aren't they?) team with a 40-year old netminder and some of its best players injured. Don't get it.

  8. No, that one is currently going on and in Germany. There's one in Switzerland in mid-December that involves Slovakia.

I can't find a link for it, but on International Hockey Forums (very reliable users for these things), it's apparently the Arosa Cup involving Switzerland, Slovakia, Denmark, and Belarus. That's literally all I know about it right now.

    http://forums.internationalhockey.net/show...amp;postcount=5

Really, that tourney is new to me. I knew of the Deutschland Cup and Swiss Hockey Challenge, but not the Arosa Cup... I should plan a tour of euro hockey tournaments. They all seem so random and fun.

  9. If a deal is "95% done" like is presupposed by Eklund, it won't be done for a bit as the Habs aren't in a position to take a couple extra million on in salary just yet.

Of course, given the amount of done deals Eklund reports regarding the Canadiens, shouldn't we have Teemu Selanee riding shotgun with Saku Koivu right now? Frolov, Lecavalier and Bieska are all Habs as well, haven't you all heard? I like many of Hockeybuzz's bloggers, but as far as Eklund himself is concerned, he is like the tabloid of the hockey world as far I am concerned. Plus, he makes an insane amount of grammatical errors.

Oh, and by the way, the tournament you were referring to earlier is the Deustchland Cup:

  10. Pretty good first period overall, 2 straight games with a PPG now, that should have the Habs in double digits and calm some people down there. One concern from the end of the period: ~ 1 minute left, offensive zone faceoff, out comes Pyatt-Eller-Moen? After going aggressive for 19 minutes, Martin just seemed to roll over there.

Developing storyline: Halpern 2/7 on the draw going up against Bergeron (5/8). Not often you see Halpern below 50%.

Eller's line played a solid first and the Dane was the team's best faceoff man in the first. With that in mind, can't say the decision offended me.

  11. I hate to see O'Byrne go, but I guess that Gauthier felt Weber, Carle, Henry or even Brendan Nash and St. Denis would be able to fill the gap if there were a couple of injured defensemen at the same time during the season. And let's face it: obviously Picard played well enough to be the first to play if Martin needs him.

But now that O'Byrne is gone, it means that there is some space for another player in the line-up. Who will be recall guys?

White, Palushaj, Max Pax or Desharnais?

I suspect a lot of people in Quebec will be pleased to see the acquisition of a local kid. Plus, it now leaves ample room for the Canadiens to call up a player. With Patches recent comments, not sure I'd want to reward him with a prompt call up. Desharnais or Palushaj could help bring a bit more scoring to the lineup. Palu has more size but Desharnais has the better scoring touch. In any case, Lapierre on a second line, like Moen, Pyatt or Boyd, leaves me underwhelmed.

Oh, and good job being on top of the story Brian.

  12. Exactly. Practicing against Cammalleri, Gionta, Plekanec, Markov etc is not beneficial?

Access to Muller, Martin. Training with the elite trainers in the game.

If it was so elementary, we would all be running NHL franchises.

No kidding, eh? Even amongst our debating of the right way to develop a player, it is very difficult to pinpoint the best way to do so. Brian recently defended the merits of letting a player dominate in the minors before moving up but also recognizes the value in having players practice with the big team. Some feel playing time is key. Others feel that the choice of linemates (or D-partners) is paramount. And, I, well I frankly am not sure what my opinions are. But I'll figure out... then I'll run an NHL franchise (you just watch!)

  13. Maybe he complained that he wasn't playing.

"I've been a starter for the past 2 years. I deserve better!"

"Oh yeah? Then how come nobody claimed your ass for free!? Nobody messes with Big Jacques!"

Seriously though, how much would you pay to hear Jacques Martin say the above and refer to himself as Big Jacques. Imagine it for a second. Sweet, right?

  14. They sure could use one, that's for sure. Mind you, cap wise they've been lucking out with injuries...mind you that doesn't help their on-ice product.

It's strange how injuries are almost viewed as good fortune now with the salary cap. It'll be a heck of party once teams like New Jersey and Vancouver get healthy.

  15. So as you can see, it's doable, just not yet and probably not with White being a replacement callup, it'd have to be a guy like Wyman or Conboy (550k). It'd also leave the Habs with very little wiggle room...again. My head hurts, time to stop thinking about this...where did the last half hour go?

Your point is well taken. But, the notion of clearing Spacek is really not only one of cap space, but also of roster space. In a setup where Bieska is added while O'Byrne and Picard are waived or traded, you end up with a logjam:

    Subban - Markov

    Gorges - Gill

    Spacek - Hamrlik

    Bieska

Subban and Gorges are the lowest paid of the group, earning 875 K and 1,1 M respectively. However, they don't look to be sitting in the press box anytime soon. That means that you end up with a 7th blueliner that costs at least 2,25 M dollars. I thought, and still do, that it was insane for the Flyers to accept Mezjaros' 4M dollar hit to fill out their D as opposed to using that money to address their weak goaltending. In the same vein, it would be equally foolhardy for the Canadiens to add to a position of strength instead of addressing their need for another scoring forward.

P.S Hey, Brian, I hear the Devils are looking for a capologist. Seems like your pretty good and heaven knows they need one.

  16. I'm sorry, but assuming that the Habs trade two younger players (say, O'Byrne + Forward), how exactly does Bieksa's 3+ million fit under Montreal's cap? According to our (ok, Brian's) Cap Sheet, the Canadiens have just a hair above 300,000 dollars in space. One option would be to offload Jaro Spacek, but that is much easier said than done.
