  1. Rumor has it Tommy Salo has scheduled a meeting tomorrow with MoDo's "executive of sports operations" Bengt Hedin to tell him the news. I have no English links and at this point I take it more as a rumor than a fact, but they are debating it on the sports broadcast on the radio (from the 7th game of the quarterfinals between Timrå and Djurgården).

  2. Oh yeah, he is. Or was rather. He died about 15 years ago. It might interest you that few Swedish-born singer/songwriters have been as popular as Cornelis writing and performing songs in the Swedish language. He was truly a master.

I love The Doors BTW. They may be my favourite band actually.

  3. Wasn't Mike Ricci also part of the deal?

I read on the Text-TV news this morning that Forsberg said he needs to really think things over. This season has been tough on him. Sounds like he's not sure whether he'll come back to play next season.

  4. Södertälje–Linköping 2-1 (1–1, 0–0, 1–0)

    First period:

0–1 (10.26) Magnus Johansson (Brendan Morrison) 5-on-3 powerplay

1–1 (18.13) Mikael Samuelsson (Niclas Hävelid, Joakim Eriksson)

    Third period:

2–1 (3.45) Petri Liimatainen (Joakim Eriksson)

    Shots: 22–20

    Game played in Södertälje

Södetälje wins the series 4-2 and are through to the semifinals

Cool thing that the last team who qualified for the playoffs (in the final game of the season) beat the team who finished 2nd in the regular season.

    Modo–Färjestad 2-3 (1–0, 1–0, 0–3)

    First period:

1–0 (13.38) Henrik Sedin (unassisted) powerplay

    Second period:

2–0 (19.46) Hans Jonsson (Daniel Sedin)

    Third period:

2–1 (7.36) Jonas Höglund (Jesper Mattsson)

2–2 (9.53) Mats Trygg (Jesper Mattsson, Jonas Höglund) powerplay

2–3 (10.24) Janne Grönvall (Jörgen Jönsson, Marcel Jenni)

    Shots: 31–19

    Game played in Örnsköldsvik

Färjestad wins the series 4-2 and are through to the semifinals

I find it hard to believe that Modo fans are not devastated. Considering the roster Modo has, they have really choked.

    Djurgården–Timrå 1-3 (0–0, 1–2, 0–1)

    Second period:

0–1 (4.15) Jonathan Hedström (Magnus Nilsson)

0–2 (18.41) Jonathan Hedström (unassisted) shorthanded

1–2 (19.38) Staffan Kronwall (Nichlas Falk) powerplay

    Third period:

1–3 (16.00) Robert Carlsson (Niklas Nordgren)

    Shots: 26–24

    Game played in Stockholm

    Series tied 3-3

Interesting points are that Timrå has won every time the two teams have played in the Globe Arena this season. The only game Djurgården has won at home in Stockholm was played in the Johanneshov arena, which was the biggest arena in Stockholm and home for the major Stockholm clubs before the Globe Arena was finished in 1989.

Also, the 7th deciding game will be played in Timrå.

  5. Name one ref who has never made a mistake in his entire career.

If players and coaches would get half as much ciritcism as refs do for decisions they have to make in a split second, no one would want to play or coach at all.

  6. Is it? I don't think anyone's saying it's all Mourinho's fault, but he does share some of the blame.

Maurinho isn't such an idiot to say things which never happened (according to Frisk).
I think Mourinho have misinterpreted what happened. Frisk has been a FIFA ref since 1991, so I think he knows what he's talking about.

Mourinho on the other hand has been fined £20 000 by the English FA for saying Sir Alex Fergusson bribed a ref during a Chelsea-ManU game. He needs to watch his mouth.

  7. Oh, OK, I see your point. But I don't know what Ronaldinho has said and done, so I can't comment on that. I heard though that Eto'o was insulted by arena staff and that UEFA has started an investigation.

This is what Frisk himself had to say about the incident in Barcelona:

    From an interview in Aftonbladet

    Quote:

Och hoten kommer från England och av engelska supportrar?

      – Låt mig säga så här; Chelsea har supportrar även i andra delar av världen, så det har inte bara varit från England.

    Free translation:

Q: And the threats come from England and English fans?

A: Let me put it this way; Chelsea also has fans from other parts of the world, so it hasn't been only from England.

    More from the interview:

    Quote:

Q: Looking back, what do you think about what happened in Barcelona?

A: When I left I didn't understand the extent of what had transpired. That a correct second yellow card that led to a red card would have such consequences, that a friendly handshake with the coach of the home team would stir up such strong emotions. I said "Hello" to José Mourinho too, but before the game. I was raised to be polite and when someone, who I have also met before as a player, says hello to me for the first time during a game, I return the gesture. But evidently, there is no room for such courtesy.

A: Furthermore, I was accused of letting the coach of the home team into the locker room. I am so experienced that everyone should understand that I would never let a coach into my room during a game. It makes me sad to be accused of that, after so many years in international soccer.

A: I still maintain that what I did in Barcelona was correct, but never could I imagine in my wildest dreams what it would lead to.

Personally I think Mourinho is an idiot. This only makes me hate him even more. He has been involved in quite a lot of controversial incidents this season. Only a Russian mobster would hire such an idiot to coach his team. I don't care how good a coach you are or how impressive your resumé may be, there is no excuse for the behaviour Mourinho has displayed.

Maybe it's time Abramovich took action against these extremist elements that are associated with his team, who call themselves fans of his team. What responsabilities does Abramovich have in all of this?

Furthermore, I'm shocked! I have always held Frisk in the highest regard. Sure, he's just a human being and makes mistakes too from time to time, but I think he has always been a great PR man for Swedish soccer in general and referees in particular.

  8. I remember as well Salo's stop on Kariya. That save was far more important than the goal againts Belarus. Would be unfair if people remember him for that centre ice goal.
It may be unfair, but I think sports fans (perhaps people in general) find it easier to remember more recent events than something that occured ten years ago.

ADD: Eh, on second thought, I might have to alter that statement. I post regularly on a Pittsburgh Penguins board and you bet some people there are pretty damned obsessed with Lemieux and anyone or anything that were associated with the Pens back when they won the Cup in 1991 and 1992. :guru:

BTW, thanks magnus for the SEL Playoffs reports.. appreciated.
My pleasure. I just thought that now that I am the privileged one for a change, what with all the NHL players here in Sweden, it's the least I can do. :/)

Don't get the logic behind this.

Salo is a bit enigmatic. For many years he was our best goaltender. Not many Swedes have made it in the NHL playing goal.

The only other one I can think of off the top of my head was Pelle Lindbergh, who played for the Flyers in the early/mid 1980's (I think he even won the Vezina once, but I'm not sure). Sadly, Pelle died from the injuries he sustained in a car accident. He was in a coma after crashing with his Porsche, but in the end his life could not be saved and the doctors shut off the respirator (I am not sure what the technical word is in English, respirator is what it's called in Swedish).

Uhm... where was I? Oh yeah, Salo. Ever since he stopped Paul Kariya on the deciding penelty shot in the 1994 Olympic final in Lillehammer, Norway, he's been quite the hero on our national team. Then after the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, when Belarus eliminated us after one of the weirdest goals a Swedish goalie have ever allowed, Salo's name was widely discredited. Furthermore, the last couple of years he hasn't played as well in international tournaments, so I think he's not as popular as he once was.

But there is no need to be mean to the guy! Calling him Sweden's Brisebois! That's a bit too strong!

    ;)

  11. According to Swedish papers today, the injury wasn't as bad as it first seemed. Nordström (the guy who cross checked him) was suspended until the disciplinary board comes to a decision. Which means he won't play in game 5 tomorrow.

  12. I watched FC Milan-Manchester United. Milan won the game 1-0 after a wonderful header from Crespo. Tim Howard (is his name Tim? I'm always uncertain what his first name is) was in goal for United, but I have to say that even if ManU lost, Howard wasn't bad. There was nothing he could do on the goal. Milan was clearly the better team and United really only created one good scoring chance throughout the whole game; Giggs hit the goal-post after a quick counter attack by United. Milan won both games 1-0 and deserves to be through to the quarterfinals IMO.

It was a pretty boring game last night though. Felt like key players on the United roster are past their prime (Keane, Scholes to name the most important ones). Rooney was invisible all night and so was Van Nistelrooy. Meanwhile, Milan had to make do without Shevshenko (sp?). I was most impressed with Milan's defense, which says something about the game. Paolo Maldini has still "got it". IMO he is still the big cahuna in Milan. Nesta was good too and Jaap Stam even showed rarely seen offensive skills with a very nice 60-yard pass to Crespo (think it was Crespo). Cafu was also good on his right flank. But like I said, it was a boring game. I had hoped for a lot more.

Lyon on the other hand totally annihilated Werder Bremen, winning the game 7-2, 10-2 combining both games' results. Sylvain Wiltord scored a hat trick. Lyon has scored 27 goals in 8 Champions League games this season

Also, the Juventus-Real Madrid game was marvelous!

Zlatan was probably the best forward in the game. I can only think of one single scoring chance for Juve that he was not directly involved in (which was BTW the winning goal scored by Zalayeta in the second overtime quarter). He played a few tricks on Gravesen. Still Gravesen was very good IMO. He was very accurate in his passing game. Impressive!

In retrospect Madrid came out playing a little bit too defensively - they won the first game 1-0 so thay had that to build on. In the end, maybe that came back to bite them in the as$. They had good controll of things until Juventus scored the 1-0 goal (a bicycle shot by that French guy, uhm, what's his name... eh... blackout, sorry Trezeguet!), but since the goal was scored so late in the game (relatively late - 75th minute), I think it was difficult for them to get back on top and go on the offensive. At that time Juventus sort of got the initiative. The final score of 2-0 after extra time was a fair result if you ask me. Juventus deserved the win. Not that Real Madrid didn't play well, it's just that I think their overly defensive strategy cost them too much. But it was a very entertaining game. Much more entertaining than the Milan-ManU game.

  13. While I do think it is awesome that Theodore is outplaying Kiprusoff in the Djurgården-Timrå series, I'm still disappointed Djurgården is leading 3-1. Why? Because Henrik Zetterberg is my favourite player. I think Zetterberg and Frölunda goalie Henrik Lundqvist are the two best players in all of Sweden this season. Still, you have to give credit to Theo. Throughout the whole series there have been rather few goals scored, and Theo deserves his fair share of credit IMO.

    Add: Zetterberg plays for Timrå.

  14. I'm not laughing at Forsberg either, I said "hehehe" because I find it funny that I'm able to get the same coverage of SEL games as you (on the net, highlights on tv here)
    Oh, OK, gotcha.
Forsberg is done for these playoffs, and some people (his father, the media here in Canada) are speculating that his career might be over.

Its not because he is not "able" to play anymore, I guess people think he will retire.

Oh, OK, I see their line of thinking now. But I have to state for the record that that was not how I enterprited old man Forsberg's comment. Then again, if you read between the lines... Oh well, it's late here, I should hobble off to bed... ;)
  15. hehehe...

its the lead story on TSN sportscentre right now. Forsberg suffers 7th concussion, his father Kent thinks his career is over. They showed footage of him on the ice, but the cameras did not get a good angle of the hit.

    I like Forsberg, so I don't think it's funny.

The Swedish papers don't make it out exactly the same way. Sounds more like Forsberg won't be able to play anymore in this year's playoffs. But they say nothing to indicate his career is in jeopardy.
