  1. so your theory is that guys never score more in the nhl than they did in junior? Bob gainey was not a prolific scorer in his junior career but he turned out all right , i think.

Bob Gainey's best total in junior was 22 goals. At the NHL his best goal total was 23. That's a whopping difference of one. I've learnt my lesson.

  2. By your logic, a player who isn't good enough to be drafted at age 18 will never be good enough for the NHL. Seriously, some guys max out their talent before they are even drafted. A guy isn't a bust because the scouts misread his talent. Guys become busts because they are done/nearly done developing as players. At age 18, they are about as good as they are going to get. Guys who are not busts continue to get better as players after they are drafted. Is it likely a player's offensive skills will grow so much that a poor scorer in juniors will become a good scorer in the pros? Not likely, but still quite possible.

Actually I was talking about junior (which a player can actuaklly play until he's about 20) and Ahl Echl etc. BTW, Matt D'agostini is not 18, and I never said not to draft 18 year old.

  3. and obviously he can't learn or improve. so lets take him out and shoot him, shall we. Ridiculous comment based on that there are a whole bunch of nhl'ers who you would throw away. ever heard the term late Bloomer? what about all the guys who were goal scoring wizzs and turned into defensive forwards, like Guy Carboneau for instance. Stats are for losers, when you compare other levels to the nhl. He is not over rated but he probably ain't guy lafleur either, oh yeah even he did not do so good his first years.

That's right, it's ridiculous to think a guy who has been a consistent 20 goal scorer at every level will be at best a 20 scorer. At the junior level these guys get more ice time against lesser opponents. It would make perfect sense that less icetime against a higher level of competetion would mean far greater offensive numbers. All those examples you gave-like Mario Lemieux, Gretztky, Crosby-who were all 20 goal scores at the junior and AHL level totally proved your point. He's not a late bloomer, he's putting up the kind of numbers you would expect. Guy Carbonneau would proove the argument I would make: guys do not become better scorers at the NHL level than they do at the junior level. Some people's assessments of the scoring ability and skill of players like Max Laperriere and D'Agostini is unrealistic. I never said D'ago stunk or that i would give him away for nothing.

  4. Whoa whoa, when did everyone get so down on D'Agostini? He looks like he can blossom into a pure sniper and is easily among the best prospects in the system. He's only played 57 games in his career and is 22 years old. How can anyone be ready to give up on a prospect at this stage in his career? Especially after a frenzied goal streak immediately after breaking in!

D'Agostini is really overrated. This guy has never scored more than 20 goal at any level. Stats for D'Ago

  5. I love signing these guys in their 20s (but then it sucks when your Komi walks away at 27).

Mara's a 29 year old, 20+ point 6'4 d-man (of course, he's probably only going to be here for one season) and Moen's a 27 year old 6'2 bottom 6 forward that can fight. (Cammalleri's also 27 and we just locked him up for 5 years.)

A season of Mara means guys like Subban and Weber get more time to develop. I like these kind of depth signings too.

  6. \

Is that like almost have the surefire winning lottary ticket?

I'd rather have 1 bluechipper, then a bunch of guys like Maxwell, White, Kristo, Chipchura etc, etc, Atleast with a bluechip prospect you have hope. Been awhile since the last great sure thing has come along in Montreal. I honestly thoght it was Carey Price, and hope it still is. But its hard to think after the finish of the last two seasons that hes it

In theory having a lot of young cheap talent-especially in the cap system- should allow the Habs to package some in trade for an impact player. I'm not sure if our talent is overrated by our organization compared to how other teams rate it, or if Bob just incapable of pulling the trigger on something.

  7. Apparently the Avs have offered Roy the job as both their Head Coach AND their General Manager. Absolute craziness, the guy hasn't coached above the junior level and they want to put him in charge of the whole franchise.

    Yikes!

Better Colarado than Montreal In all likekyhood he'll probably be a disaster. If does a good job somewhere down the line Montreal could hire him after he's had experience there.

  8. But the interesting part is that out of those 11 only 3 made the jump directly from coaching at the Junior level directly to the NHL.

Vigneault was a head coach in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for eight seasons before he became the Canadiens' head coach in 1997.

I don't mean to be a jerk but In "1992–93, Vigneault got his first break in the NHL as an assistant coach with the expansion Ottawa Senators." (took it from wikipedia).

I can't think of a succeesful NHL who started as a goalie, so why would Montreal want him as a coach?

  9. People should keep the current state of the economy in mind when talking about contracts. Some teams are really hurting financially and the cap will probably be going down over the next few years. You might find a guy like Komi might not get the crazy offers he might have over the last few free agency seasons. You might also find teams are willing to part with good veterans they can't afford for cheap younger players. Hopefully, Montreal with their young prospects and still selling out the building nightly will be able to take advantage of this landscape.

  10. yeah - but if you're a GM right now you have to wonder if Kovalev has anything left in the tank.

There's usually someone who believes all a player like Kovalev needs is a change of scenery. People should also rememember that teams like Pitts. NYR or Van. must be desperate to make some kind of change in the hopes that there teams might get back on track.

  11. If he decides to play in Montreal for 700,000 I think the fans would be less likely to boo him. I think part of his problem years ago was that he was being overpaid based on his performance. Personally, I like the idea of him as a 5,6 d-man seeing time on the 2nd pp unit. It could provide some nice depth. Pople should also remember that Streit and Dandenault have the option of playing forward ( I thought Streit played much better at forward).

  12. Last year, Souray had the hot hand. Understandably this lead to guys passing him the puck and letting him shoot. I'm hoping a guy like Markov and a few others take more shots which should lead to more scoring from them.
