  1. Seriously, I'd say there was probably more fans of the Habs outside of the province back in the 50's or 60's, but that number probably dwindled with time, expansion, new pro sports emerging, etc. There's certainly not a vast amount of Habs fans in the USA given the market the NHL. Rest of Canada? Hockey fan base is taken mostly by the other NHL teams based on regions, Habs splitting the Maritimes with the Leafs. Europe? Somewhat like the States I'd say...

Quebec? From someone who has worked with the public for over 15 years from the 4 corners of the province, I can tell you, without any exaggeration, that in average, in a group of 10, you'll find a minimum of about 7 Habs fans. Everybody is a Habs fan. You can talk about the Habs with anyone you meet. I live in Quebec City, it's still Nords country, there's still loads of people hating the Habs, but there's Habs fans everywhere too. The Habs coach is the person who gets the most media coverage (more than the Premier or anyone else) in the province year after year for a reason.

So I'd estimate the number of Habs fans in the province to roughly 70% of the population, which amounts to about 4 500 000+. You think there's more than that amount of Habs fans worldwide?

    Read between the lines...

I really think you are underestimating the amount of ex-pats, especially in Ontario. I run into Habs fans all the time. Most are either:

    -Montreal ex-pats-

    -children of Montreal ex-pats

-cheer for the Habs because the leafs are the leafs.

I'd say that less than 50% of the hardcore hockey fans that I run into are leaf fans and I live in the suburbs of Toronto.

Many are just fed up and consider them to be a joke.

  2. If there's anything I remember from last year's superbowl its the 4th quarter. I recall the game being really quite dull until the 4th quarter came around, and then both teams knid of exploded with the action.

Everyone looks back on the game so positively because they remember the 4th quarter being so great. However, the rest of the game, was a dud at best.

Thats the way I remember it too, similar to this year except this year you had the Harrison INT return which was one of the more exciting players in SB history, especially when you take into account that the half had expired.

  3. Best Super Bowl I've ever seen though is still Panthers/Patriots.

Doesn't make my top 3 and Ive only watched since Titans/Rams...

    Id go

    1. Steelers/Cards

    2. Titans/Rams

    3. Pats/Giants

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one...

  4. To be honest I remember two plays from last year's Super Bowl. Tyree and then the Burress TD.

Next year I guarantee I will remember the Fitz TD, the Harrison INT return, the Holmes TD and even a couple of catches leading up to it, and the Zona safety. Probably the Warner fumble too to end the game.

It's arguable but I'm taking this years game and I don't think I'm alone judging by what a lot of my friends were saying, as well as the media.

Perhaps you enjoyed the Giants-Pats because it was just fun to root against New England?

  5. No, they reviewed it. It was just clearly a fumble so they didn't spend much time on it.

Goodell has to be kidding himself if he thinks that topped last years Super Bowl. Probably one of those things you just kinda have to say though.

Really? I think that was easily a better game than last year. Back and forth throughout that fourth quarter.

  6. Time to see what Plekanec is made of...Last year can't be a total fluke can it?

It's easy to be doom and gloom about this, but let's be honest, we did fine enough with Koivu, Tanguay, and Higgins out of the lineup. Koivu is just rounding into form now. Higgins looks to actually be finding a way out of the doldrums, and Tangs ... well, he'll be back one day.

We know we have the depth: it's already proven itself to this point. Now D'Agostini and Pacioretty will most definitely be staying with the big club. We have Chipchura in Hamilton who seems to be either the hard-luck kid with respects to gaining a roster spot in Montreal or isn't up to snuff - and if the latter is the case, this is a chance presented to him on a silver platter. Begin is no Latendresse, but he has, over short spells, played well above his head. Tangs will be back, as will Lats.

And really, bottom line, it's not where you finish that really matters, it's what you do in the playoffs that counts. Montreal has not hit stride yet. If they're waiting until the playoffs to get healthy and start really going, I'm sure everyone is fine with that.

I'll never forget, so long ago, Don Cherry talking about the Habs early in his Coach's Corner stint. They playoffs were coming and the team had struggled a lot during the season with consistency and injuries. With about two weeks to go until the playoffs, there's Don being somewhat dejected. I'll paraphrase:

"And here we go again, folks, with the Montreal Canadiens. Never count them out I tell ya. Just like always, they're getting healthy at the right time going into the playoffs, and that means they're playing better as well. Watch out for those Canadiens."

If memory serves, that was 1986.

Thanks for some reassurance Colin. I was about ready to cry myself to sleep but this post helped me put things in perspective.

  7. A Vikings regular season that didn't end in bitter disappointment

I don't know how to feel. We haven't won a big game to get into the playoffs since I started following them.

Not overly optimistic about our chances against Philly but we'll see...

  8. Makes me not want to watch baseball anymore.

I'm really feeling the same way. I love the sport and i'll be all over fantasy baseball when it comes along, but I'm having a hard time getting fully invested in the Jays (ex-Expos fan).

It's just not fun being in a division with the sox and yanks. And with the economic downturn we can't even pretend to compete financially.

Of course Riccardi sucks too so everything is against us.

  9. I can't buy into the fact that the yankees overpay for anyone. In the literal sense, yeah they can give too much money to a particular player, but in a figurative sense, the yankees can't actually overpay for anyone as they have a (seemingly) unlimited budget. I really don't think they even care what CC is doing for them 4-5 years down the line, if they still get great numbers from him then perfect, but if he starts to lag and is a mid-rotation guy, then they can just go out and get somebody else.

Seems like the economic times are just making the rich even richer.

Jays only seem to be in the market for Furcal at this point, and with Marcum out for the year the rotation is looking weak after Halladay and a hurting McGowan.

Ahhh MLB...when will you get a cap

  10. iff we don't like the score after the first period, maybe Michelle Jean will let us prorogue the game until January.

lol, i havent actually laughed out loud at something i've read on a message board in a while. Good work!

As for the game, let's play like we did last time the Rags visited the bell centre, minus the first period and a half...

  11. I bet if I were dig up posts of yours, I could find harmless terms you've used that can also be considered disgusting by overly sensitive people. You could even argue the nicknames people give the Kostitsyn brothers are misogynistic. What makes the term more disgusting as such monstrosities (cover your ears) as bitch and slut (which was used in this very thread without anyone getting upset). HabsWorld hasn't even bothered to ban them yet. Hell, come to think of it, wasn't it you who offended Fanpuck by using the word "re.tarded"? There's much more offense to take from that phrase (and yeah, I've used it before too) than from sloppy seconds.

Did you just compare message board posts to a national television audience?

  13. I definitely like seeing SK out on the ice.

Even though he has taken a few bad penalties lately, he brings lots energy and grit to the lineup. Even when he isn't getting points, he still contributes.

he'll be back next game, Carbo just wanted to send him a message. Hard to know who to bench exactly though and that's gonna be a tough decision for the coaching staff.

IMO Kostopolous has been great, even if he isn't suited for an offensive role long term. Do you keep Lats benched and bring in SK for BGL? Or do you bench begin as well and bring in Lats and SK?

Begin has been great lately, so I think BGL sits and Lats as well for another game...

  14. the best thing would be for him to be called out publicly by his teammates. i'm quite most of the team is already sick of him.

you are quite right. Richard and especially Turco seemed pretty angry about having him on the team. Owner Tom Hicks said he would have been suspended by the team if the NHL didn't do anything.

The worst is how he calls all of the reporters over. What a loser.
