  1. Stoking the flames here...

When it comes to creating a roster spot for Dumont.....

would anyone be against trading Perezhogin for a defense prospect?

As long as the prospect has great promise. Perezhogin is one of those youngsters I would hate to see go and then develop into a "Marian Hossa-type" player. Then again, I put Kostitsyn in the same category, so if it means trading for a very good defense prospect, I think it could be smart.

This would indeed make room for Dumont but would not fix the cap space problem.

    Here`s the radio canada link:

    http://www.radio-canada.ca/sports/hockey/2...01-dumont.shtml

It essentially says that a total of 8 teams have contacted Dumont`s agent, one team has made a serious offer, the Habs are to talk again to Dumont`s agent Tuesday night, and that Dumont will take a decision within a week and a half.

I guess it will come down to how much Dumont wants to play in Montreal and how much of a pay cut he`s willing to take. I would be surprised if BG offered him more than $2.2 million a year (assuming he finds the cap room of course). Given that and today`s greed mentality, it might be wishful thinking to see Dumont sign with the Habs.

  2. RDS is now saying that BG contacted Dumont`s agent over the weekend. No offers were made, but Dumont`s agent confirmed that the discussion was very positive.

Hmmmm !!! It has already been well debated here whether Dumont would be a good addition or not and the cap room problems of signing him. Personally, I think Dumont would be a very good signing if Gainey can somehow fit him in. Three lines that show offensive threat could definitely work in today`s NHL.

Gainey is enquiring and Dumont said he would love to play here, I`m starting to think there might be a real good possibility of seeing Dumont in a Habs uni. Can`t say I believed that just last week.

  3. Someone correct me if I`m wrong, but this is what I figure is the Habs salary situation: Approx. $29 million committed as of now. Assume Bouillon will sign for $2 million and assume our RFAs (Abby, Higgins, Komisarek, Perezhogin, Ribeiro, and Ryder) will cost a toatal of approx. $7 to $8 million. That makes a total of $38 to $39 million, leaving room under the cap of $5 to $6 million. Realistically we could spend $2 to $4 million to not get right up against the cap.

Not much is it ? Elias, Arnott, Shanny, etc... something has to give.

All this being said, I`m not sure what to expect. I do think that Ribeiro, Zednik, Bonk, Aebischer are expendable and could basically be given away for very little in trades to make room for free agents. Should be a very interesting coming week.

  4. These two Leafs games will be expensive, don't kid yourselves. There are busloads of people coming from Toronto for a "long weekend", arriving Thursday and ready to party for three days. Add on top of that that these are actually two huge games for the Leafs and you could expect to pay at least $100 per seat for the cheapest seats. If you can get them for less than that on the Internet, then I suggest to do it, especially for Saturday's game.

    GO HABS GO !!!

  5. I trust Bob Gainey. We're in good hands.

Todd Simpson is not a blockbuster deal, but he brings us toughness, something we could definitely use more of. I've always liked Simpson, he'll always stick up for his teammates and should be very valuable in the playoffs. Good depth move.

BTW, there's no way he's going to Hamilton.

  6. I'd take him in a heartbeat. I love to hate him, but on the habs he'd fit perfectly with Begin. He's experienced, hits, good skater, decent skills, drops the gloves against middleweights and makes heavyweights take penalties. Perfect guy for the playoffs and I think he could become a fan favorite in Montreal. For the right price, take him.

  7. Puck, I have to congratulate you and everybody else that helps you on this web site, great job and keep it up.

Obviously you've found a great way to channel your passion for the Habs and hockey in general. Who knows, with the right contacts you might find yourself in the media section at next year's training camp.

You've come a long way from our GBSK pool days !

    Keep up the good work.

I love the fact that our young guys are really playing hard. I hope to see atleast two on the roster.

Right now it looks like Higgins and Perezhogin are ready, and Latendresse might play his way into the lineup. Hainsey or Streit should also make the team.

Chipchura, Kostitsyn, Plekanec, Hossa and the rest will have to wait.

I also think Vandermeer will find a spot on the fourth line.

  9. I was also there today (as well as the first day) and I can tell you that there were at least twice as many people today than Wednesday.

I didn't see any of the first scrimmage and had an obstructed view for the second scrimmage. I did see Latendresse set up Ribeiro for a goal. Nice patience by Latendresse as he held on to the puck before feeding Ribs.

I have to say that I'm getting on the Latendresse band wagon, but the real test will come during exhibition games. I'm sure he will get plenty of ice time. Basically, if they keep him it has to be to play on the top two lines and the only way I see that happening is by taking Dagenais' spot. The thing the kid has going for him is that he fits the profile of what we most need: a power forward. He represents a nice "problem" for Julien.

Kostitsyn was much better and visible today than he was Wednesday. He was on a line with Ribs and Latendresse. Vandermeer again caught my eye.

But, like Puck, I had a hard time seeing a lot of the stuff. Way too many people. Hockey fever is definitely back in Montreal.

To be honest, Chipchura was kind of invisible. But let's not jump to any conclusions yet, it was only the first scrimmage after all.

On a different note, I wonder if Urquhart was hurt because he didn't play in the scrimmage and I only saw him taking shots on a goalie at the end. Maybe he has some kind of minor injury.

  11. Ok, I just had to go watch the practice and get my long overdue fix of habs hockey. Man that felt good.

So here's what I saw, and some thoughts, in no particular order:

    - The place was packed, standing room only, three rows deep.

    - I got there a little late and missed the first 15 minutes of scrimmage and it was 1-0 for the Reds. Final score, 3-0 Reds.

    - The two best players were, surprise, surprise: Ribeiro and Kovalev. Kovalev set up the second goal with a beautiful feed to Locke after coming down the right wing, cutting into traffic in the slot while protecting the puck like only he can, got Price to commit, and then when everybody thought he would shoot he fed a beautiful pass to Locke across the crease who then just needed to push it in the net. Ribeiro also scored a beautiful goal on Price after a great move in the slot.

    - Price saw a lot of action and after letting in the two above mentionned goals, on which he had no chance, he played very well. Very good technique and the guy looked incredibly calm. My first impression of him is very good.

    - A couple of good hits, Bouillon on Hainsey who was trying to pinch, and Latendresse on Jeff Paul. Paul wasn't to happy about it and hooked Latendresse going back up the ice. After the whistle, they bumped and it looked like Paul wanted to go but nothing happened. Speaking of Latendresse, he got plenty of ice time, didn't look out of place and was in on a couple of good plays. Looks like a nice second round draft choice for the Habs.

    - Streit looked good and wasn't afraid to pinch in on the play and almost scored doing so.

    - Vandermeer isn't too bad for a goon. He worked hard and made some plays. Ivanans is one big boy. Komisarek tried to put a good hit on him and Ivanans barely moved. It'll be interesting to see how Ivanans, Vandermeer and Paul do during camp. They all looked pretty decent and I think one of them could make the team for when we need muscle.

    - Ryder still seems to always find an open spot in the slot and he had a few good opportunities on some quick releases.

    - There weren't any set lines as things kept getting mixed up.

    - Oh, and I almost forgot, it was real good to not see Brisebois.

That's all I can think of for now. If you have any questions, I'll try to answer them.

  12. He sounded like he was done during today's press conference in terms of signing UFAs to fill spots on his priority list. He mentionned that he was concerned about Huet's injury and that if it reveals itself to be something long term that they would be in the market for a backup goalie.

Depending on what happens to other teams and their salary caps (i.e. the Flyers having to trade high priced players to stay under the cap), I think Gainey might consider making a trade if it's the right one. I'm sure he'll ask about Gagne, that would be amazing for Montreal if we could get him for a couple of prospects, which is what the Flyers will have to settle for.

Some people here mentionned a rumor of Ribeiro and Theo for Lecavalier and Kubina... I really don't think Gainey wants to trade Theo, especially afetr hearing him during the press conference.

  13. I don't like this at all. According to rds.ca it's a two year deal worth $3 million. 8 goals, 12 assists in 66 games. We need either scoring, size, or grit, or even youth. Sundstrom brings us none of this. I was really hoping we would get rid of him.

  14. Woooohoooooo. Yeahhhh. Wow. I win, I win.

It was fun, and very close in the end. dlbalr certainly could have won. I have to say that picking Iginla and Kiprusoff right from the start was the key for me. It allowed me to save my trades and be patient. Thanks to everyone that participated. I'll be back next year to see if I could get lucky again.

What ever happened to Puck ???? We need an explanation from the master of all pools...

    Cheers.

  15. Dackell will play in Sweden next year and, according to RDS, Sundstrom will likely play in Sweden particularly if his good friend Forsberg decides to also play in Sweden.

This is great news. Along with Juneau retiring, Dackell and Sundstrom leaving means we're getting rid of useless overpaid players. More money for Kovalev, perhaps Gainey will be tempted to fill one of these vacancies through the acquisition of free agent Ian Laperriere, and maybe a rookie like Higgins or Hossa will be ready to step up.

Things are look very bright for the Habs over the next few years. We've definitely turned a corner.

  16. dlbalr still has a decent lead after round 2. I'm sitting in second place with five trades left, not too bad I guess. The key for me is for Kiprusoff and Iginla to keep kicking butt.

    GO CHIEFS GO !!!

  17. ch_nl, all of your points are valid and are good ones. Nothing is impossible, but I would be surprised if Minnesota traded a 21 year old star (or future star) for a 29 year old injury prone player. The Wild would likely want a good young prospect or a high draft pick on top of Koivu to make that deal.

That being said, I would love to see Gaborik in Montreal and would certainly offer more than just Koivu to get him.

  18. The fact that Plekanec was cut today should suggest that Zednik will play on Thursday. They wouldn't have needed to cut anybody today if Zednik wasn't ready.

Cutting Plekanec brings the roster down to 27. The roster needs to be 23, excluding injured players. Since Kilger, Koivu, Begin, and Langdon don't look ready, they are placed on the injured list, bringing the roster down to 23, including Zednik :)

When the four injured players above come back (which should be pretty soon), the Habs will need to make 4 additional cuts. The only obvious player to cut seems to be Higgins, after that management will be faced with tough decisions. I think either Hainsey or Bouillon will be demoted. That leaves two more which should be among Dwyer, Begin, and Dackell... tough decisions...

Ribeiro is a soft player that does well against poor defensive teams.  He can create space for himself against the bigger stonger teams, and when he's on the ice he's a liability on the ice.  He doesn't know what to do in his own end, and when he's there he gets outmuscled and outworked.  I consider Ribeiro a lesser verison of Perreault.

I never said Ribs was better than Koivu, I said Ribs had the most pure offensive skills on the Habs, including Koivu. Give yourself another chance, try reading it again, maybe this time you'll get it.
