  1. Fleischmann to Florida for the same deal Cole got. I'm starting to feel better about this Cole deal every minute now. I've lost track on how many guys have signed with/been traded to Florida today, they've been busy.

    Edit: Here's who they've signed/acquired:

    Forwards

    Fleischmann

    Versteeg

    Goc

    Upshall

    Defence

    Jovanovski

    Yonkman

    Goalie

    Theodore

    Also Mike Kosta.

Yesterday they acquired the rights to Kopecky and signed him too. And at the draft they added Brian Campbell.

  2. Regardless of cap hit, we now have a 20 goal scorer, whether it's Kostitsyn or Cole, on the third line and that offensive depth will be immeasurable.

Our top 6 looks pretty nice right now.

    Just mapping this out quickly:

    Cole-Plekanec-Cammalleri

    Pacioretty-Gomez-Gionta

    Eller-Desharnais-Kostitsyn

That's a pretty deep top 9. They might still want to sign a veteran 4th line C similar to Halpern.

  3. I was just going to write that if they manage to sign a bigger name like Cole, it won't be on Montreal's terms, a 2 year deal. We had that luxury with Markov because of his injuries but Cole could command a 4 year deal and 4 million dollars.

4.5 is an overpayment but that's how UFA works. You overpay and figure that it's better to give Cole an extra million than to have no Cole at all. Same strategy that got us Gionta, Hamrlik, Gomez, arguably Cammalleri, and others.

  4. 'It appears that the demand among NHL clubs for five-time scoring champion Jaromir Jagr is growing.

Jagr's agent Petr Svoboda said that the interest in his client is increasing, according to a report on ESPN.com.

"There's a lot more teams now we're talking to," Svoboda told ESPN.com Thursday evening.'

  5. It was the second worst trade of the Gainey era - the worst being the Ribeiro trade - and no more than that. Well spoken as usual, Wamsley.

It's hard to compare it to pre-lockout trades because the Gomez trade would never have happened in a pre-cap NHL. Montreal actually received the best player in the deal. How do you compare that to all the Houle trades where Montreal dealt the best player(s) in each deal? Unless McDonagh gones on to be a top 4 d-man, I don't even think this was a bad trade for Montreal. They traded spare parts for an overpaid core player, which helped them bring in Cammalleri and Gionta, two more core players.

  6. Maybe this situation is comparable to the 2008-09 Habs, the summer Gainey cleaned out Koivu, Kovalev, Tanguay, Komisarek et al and replaced them with Gomez, Cammalleri, Gionta, Spacek and Gill over 24 hours.

There is a lot of talk of locker room issues in Philly, of a feud between Richards and Pronger that divided the team in half. It is probably a way of putting an end to that. I think it was that same season for the Habs where lots of pictures started popping up of people like Price and Higgins in bars which were shortly followed by allegations that their play was struggling because the young players were too busy partying - well, similar thing with Richards and other young players on the Flyers, and there were rumours he didn't get along with Laviolette (probably not true) and that he was getting more irritated by the media. The question is: if you're shopping Carter but then decide to trade Richards, shouldn't you then hang on to Carter?

Also there's the fact that Richards is intimidated by Subban being in the same conference so he requested a trade.

  7. Hmmm. Good that they signed Markov, but you can't exactly say that this deal is a bargain for the Habs either in term or in salary. Maybe Markov wanted major security (say 6 years) and this represented a big concession. On its face, though, his injuries seem to have been fairly irrelevant to his bargaining position.

In the unlikely event that he is significantly damaged goods, everyone is going to be ripping this contract by Year Two  But like I say, good news. Now let's sign Wiz and go after the Cup!!

Had he stayed healthy, he would definitely be getting something like 6 years. I don't see other UFA of his calibre signing for only 3 years. They all sign until they're 40 now.

In a way, we're 'lucky' to now be able to sign our elite player without giving him an eventually crippling contract.

  8. These moves are crazy but with JVR and Giroux they could afford it. Schenn is no slouch and Simmonds is fast and tough. I wouldn't say they destroyed themselves yet.

Don't forget Voracek, another beast. They probably have the most young talent in the league now.

  9. They got fair value, their team is hardly ruined - but their team identity and chemistry was destroyed and I don't know why it was done. Philly had a core that was guaranteed to contend every season, why trade Carter AND the face of your franchise? They finally have a goalie, sure, but he isn't an elite one and his contract is horrible. Their team is more likeable now though.

  10. He hadn't, but it WAS the same decision then (mind you he was much younger).

The risk is equal on both sides, but we are commenting without any inside knowledge or injury reports. It comes down to what can I live with. Can I live with Markov returning and blowing out his knee in January more than I can live with him going to Detroit and putting up 65 points?

    I want him back.

Obviously they should bring Markov back. I'm just pointing out that at the current moment he is less likely to stay healthy than Wiz is.

  11. If I asked you if Wiz was made of glass after 2008 your answer may have been different.

It is a 50/50 risk. Markov leaving as a UFA and being healthy is just as great a risk.

Because at the time he hadn't proven otherwise. Now he's been healthy for two years and has shown that the injuries haven't impaired his ability to play. Markov is still in the uncertainty phase.

  12. On average, but he played 45 games in 2010. Wisniewski has had 3 major knee surgeries before the age of 27 and nobody is hesitant to offer him big money. This is not 1980, players recover from reconstructive surgery.

If you allow Markov to hit the UFA market he likely gets $6M per and that could come back to bite them as well.

Both sides of the coin are a gamble.

Wiz played 75 games last season and 69 games the season before that. He's shown that he's 'still got it' and isn't made of glass. Markov hasn't proven that yet. Any time somebody only manages to play 8 games in a season you have to wonder whether he'll be the same player when he comes back.

  13. Markov's injuries haven't been a reoccurance of the same injury. They have been very freaky incidents. Serge Savard wrote off Chelios similarly 20 years ago after he had a couple of knee operations thinking that he would be done like Bobby Orr. Chelios went on to play another 18 years and was still a norris winning defensemen. Wiz also has had a couple of major knee surgeries, those surgeries didn't slow him down any.

In the case of Markov, its a more of a matter of hoping he doesn't keep getting hit by freaky Koivu type injuries (and in his case cancer) that impacted Koivu, but really at this stage, Markov has looked good everytime he's come back. it's just that he has kept getting hit by another freaky injuries within a very short time of coming back from an injury.

Tearing a ligament is a serious, possibly career-ruining injury. Unless you're Josh Gorges, then you just ignore it.

No sense in giving a roster spot to Emelin, he's never played in North America. This way it's his to earn, and if he doesn't, well, see ya!

That's exactly what will happen: see ya! I'd rather Emelin than Spacek or Hamrlik.

  14. Glad to see him signed - that was critical for next year, but I really wish they locked him up for 5-6 years at a bit lower of a cap hit ($5.2m avg hit long term would have been awesome).

I really hope they also try and get Wiz signed. The following D would be pretty solid:

    Subban-Markov

    Wiz-yemelin

    Gorges-weber

    Gill

    Delete spacek

His injuries must have scared them. His career could easily be over before 5 years is up and then we would be stuck with a terrible contract.

That D would be perfect, they would have to trade Spacek for the forward equivalent of Spacek to open up a spot for Emelin.

  15. I disagree about Moen bringing some physicality. I think he brings size - but like Gill, doesn't use it as much as he should. Most games, it's been Ak46 and Pouliot who were are most physical players. Issue was that like MOST goal scorers they are streaky and need to drive to the net harder.

I totally agree about the complacency. The habs management just seems to want to play things safe, make safe trades, keep safe chip it out, trapping type players and over-rely or over-play veteran guys like Spacek, gill and hammer over young guys like Subban and Weber.

I thinks it was a joke when toward the end of the year, people were praising JM for Subban's development. Subban play improved when the habs defense was decimated by the losses of Markov, Gorges and spacek and JM had no choice to play Subban more. Even then, I can't believe how often Subban was kept of that PP over Hamrlik and Spacek.

I dunno, I think PG has made some bold moves. Trading Halak for Eller was hugely controversial and risky and all of his trade additions have been solid fits. When did Gainey ever bring in a player like Wisniewski mid-season and at such a decent price? (The closest was Schneider.) It might not have much to do with the GMs but Gauthier succeeded in signing Emelin... something Gainey failed at like 5 times.

Of course they want to make safe trades - every team's management does. The defensive system shouldn't be blamed on Gauthier, it isn't him that signed Hammer or Spacek and it wasn't his choice to play them over Weber.

  16. I'm excited about the possibility of Jagr. The Habs haven't had a player of his iconic status since Doug Gilmour.

when did the czech republic get to be so credible? did I miss a memo? I know this may be hard to believe but agents sometimes give misleading interviews to journalists for the purpose of bolstering their clients position. Also since petr svoboda used to play for les habs I know that he is above reproach.

He probably meant that you generalized all European reports as being propaganda, as if the continent is primitive and corrupt compared to NA. Maybe that's not what you meant though.

  17. I know. BTH. But if you apply this logic to every single round, then all 16 teams have a realistic shot at the Cup no ?

There's enough difference between them that some teams are better than others but not enough difference to make upsets surprising.

Vancouver vs Chicago is pretty much a toss up, maybe Van has a 60% chance of winning.

But Vancouver has a much better chance of winning 4 rounds than Chicago does. It's then realistic to say that Chi will beat Van but not very realistic to say Chi will win the Cup.

  18. huh.gif

It shows how open the NHL is these days.

I don't think Montreal would have gone on to win the Cup so I wouldn't say that all 16 playoff teams have a realistic chance to win the Cup but there is no doubt that any playoff team can beat any playoff team in a single round.

  19. And yet the Habs were one game seven overtime goal away from beating them.

It shows how open the NHL is these days.
