  1. Even the thought of getting rid of Gainey is ridiculous, come on, he's only been in charge for less than 2 seasons, really. I hate seeing the Habs lose, but you don't build a contender in a day. Rejean Houle made lots of changes in a short time, which lead us down the road to today. Dispite the struggles, this is a team loaded with young prospects and players, so its not the time to panic and start a fire sale. Everyone needs to relax, take a step back, and try to be reasonable. Gainey is calm and level headed, which is exactly whats needed during difficult times.

I agree 100%. Anybody who even suggests that Gainey should go is a complete fool. It is not his fault that Theo can't stop a beachball. :hlogo:

  2. It's not Gainey's fault that Theo has sucked this year. Anybody who even suggests that Bob should or could go is completely off thier rocker!!!. This topic is not even worth discussing, quite frankly. Absolutely ridiculous!!!. Gainey coming home is the best thing to happen to this franchise since we drafted #33. :hlogo:

  3. I agree that Theo has not been at the top of his game, but to suggest trading him is ridiculous. He has proven his mettle in the playoffs and will do so again I'm sure. There are very few goalies in the league more valuble than Theodore, just ask Gretzky.:hlogo:

Cup talk is fun but seriously premature at this point. You can talk about our depth, but the fact is, one serious injury on D and we'd be in trouble.

Still, given the youth on this team and the fact that its core players (Koivu, Zednik, Theodore) are all entering their prime, and that Kovalev is only on the early side of old, I'd say that if they're not considered damned serious contenders by, oh, 2008, I'll be disappointed.

2008?. We are serious contenders right now!!. Like I've said before, if Theo is hot, this team can beat anybody.:hlogo:
  6. I've always felt that an enforcer specifically in the line-up to fight was absolutely necessary in the NHL. I'm not so sure anymore. I don't like the idea of sitting any of our current line-up for a goon. For the limited amount of fighting required right now, I'm confident that Komi or Rivet can handle the load.

What's up with you anyway Napier. I'm not sure how long you have been following hockey but apparently not very long. I can tell you this from 30 years of following the NHL and the Habs - winning by one  goal is OK! In fact its the mark of not only a good team, but a special team!

Now you are right lets temper our enthusiasm, its early in the year but not only are the signs positive so far - they are special! This many one goals wins and third period combacks say one thing - character. All the greatest teams have shown this ability. I have seen every habs game this year and with the exception of the first two periods last night - where yes indeed they lack some enthusiasm, they have played hard and have shown absolutely no quit. When is that last time I've seen that, hum - 1993! In fact, this team seems so much like that group. The 93 habs became known as the Cardiac Kids for their late game herorics and they way they kept us on the edge of our seats to the last moment. They also seem familair by the number of rookies in the lineup contributing. Another group of habs, the 1986 edition was similar.

And another point, I think perdictions are for idiots. We have had no hockey for over a year. The lineups of many teams have fundamentally changed. The balance of power has shifted and the playing field has levelled. I don't think anyone at this point has any real idea how good many teams are and who is going to be on the top when the season ends. Anything can happen over the course of a 82 game schedule and a short playoff series. Can they win the cup this year? Of course they can. But so can perhaps 15 other teams.  I think its not far off to suggest that the Habs are one of the top 6 teams in the east and one of the top 10 teams in the league. You mean to tell me the habs are not better than at least 20 other teams in this league right now and on paper? Not only that, I agree with you they probably can play better. So Napier I think you may underestimate this team, so lets wait and se where we are at XMas before we have perdictions of doom and gloom. I've been watchng hockey for long time my friend and I have a sense this is not a group you want to underestimate.

Excellent post!!. Could not agree more. Napier seems quite knowledgable, but his tone of arrogance is un-called for. We're all "border-line stupid" for considering the Habs a top-shelf club?. In yer ear pal. I don't give a shit if we win by 1 goal or 4, as long as we win. We're 10-3-1 so far against "top" teams in the east with a lack-luster Theodore. Come playoff time, if Theo is on his game, this squad can compete with anyone.:hlogo:

Look at how we played against ottawa, we are really the only team who has given them a good run, besides the teams that somehow beat them. Detroit is good, and so is vancouver, but look at the division they play in, weve had a tougher sceduale. Right now ottawa is the team, carolina has to be up there, so are we, detroit(even though they havent played great teams) and then theres the rest of the pack. Nashville is over rated.

I agree 100%. Detroit's schedule has seen them playing alot of sub-par teams. We have been playing top flight clubs and are 9-3-1. Factor in what I would call suspect goaltending on Theo's part , and I say we're doing great.:hlogo:
  9. I can't believe all the negativity in this thread!. The Habs can compete with anybody in this league. You don't have to be in first or second place in the regular season to win the cup. A balanced attack and a hot goaltender is all that is required. I'm not predicting right here and now that we will win the cup, but I truly believe that we have a good chance. The key is Theodore. If he is hot, then I think that we can beat anybody. Let us not forget, we are talking about the Montreal Canadiens. The ghosts and magic of our glorious past can lift the team back to greatness when some might least expect it('71,'73,'86,'93). Obviously, I'm an optimist , but 24 Stanley Cups justifies this optimism!. :hlogo:

Maybe we've only been outscoring opponents by one goal... but I think this is down to poor finishing and good opposing goalie play rather than luck.

If someone came up to me before the year started and asked me what the Habs' record would be 11 games in... 11 games in which Theo played like garbage... I would have guessed 2-9, 3-8 maybe.  The fact that we've won so many games, outplaying the opposition in most of them, without having our goalie steal any games for us indicates to me that we're a pretty good team.  Sure there is plenty of room for improvement, but I don't think that this team will be struggling to make the playoffs if we continue to play like this.

I agree. It is sort of the glass half empty, glass half-full type thing. I tend to believe the ladder. 8-3-1 with Theo playing sub-par?. I'll take that any day. I think that we have outplayed our opponents for the most part and the youngsters have looked great. Once Theo starts rolling, we'll be fine.:hlogo:
  11. Who cares?. He's splits-ville with his old lady. That is his business. As for all this nonsense about what happened,it is all pure speculation and none of our business. I'm sure he isn't a wife-beater. He is not the first guy to go through a divorce, and he won't be the last. All I'm concerned with is his performance on the ice and that of the team. Let's kill the Rangers tonight!:hlogo:

  12. It is such a shame that the Nordiques have moved. The Battle of Quebec in the 80's was intense. All kinds of fights and the occasional bench-clearing brawl;ahh...the good old days. I despise Dale Hunter to this day, even though the Hunters are hockey royalty in this part of Ontario. In spite of this, I must say that for me and I believe most habs fans in thier 30's or 40's, our most hated rival is the Boston Bruins. All those playoff battles in the 70's and 80's were absolute blood-sport action. Now that the goofy Leafs are in our division, this rivalry is heating up. But until we meet in the playoffs a couple of times, I don't feel it will really match the intensity of the habs/Bruin hatred, for me anyway. I'm not sure if the younger fella's on this site realize that the Habs vs Bruins was a rite of spring normally, in the old Adams division.:hlogo:

Hey, easy with the comparisons to Bob Gainey.  That guy was credited by the Russians with being the best hockey player of alltime, is in the hall of fame and has won numerous Stanley Cups.  While Begin is a hell of a hockey player and a nice piece of the playoff puzzle, he's certainly no Bob Gainey.

    [Edited on 2005/10/26 by kaos]

I wasn't comparing him to Gainey at all. Relax, dude. All I said was that Begin's effort and determination remind me of Gainey. There is only one Bob Gainey.:hlogo:
  14. I love watching this guy. 110% effort every shift(just like old #23). Heart, determination, grit, speed, balls;you name it. This dude has everything you would ever want in a third or fourth line guy. :hlogo:

If they send Higgins down and keep Dagenais, I will be supremely pissed. Higgins is a gamer who gives 110% every shift. Begin & Higgins are hell-raisers on the 4th line. My kind of hockey players. I don't think Higgins is going anywhere.:hlogo:

I agree 100%. I still think it is a little early to give the boot to our top point getter from last year, but he has been useless so far this year. He better pick it up or he will be riding the pines.
  17. I hope Ribs can pick up his game tonight. If he doesn't start making things happen soon, I believe he might lose his spot on the second line. The season is young, but he has looked flat so far and he better pick it up or face loosing ice time to one of our young, hungry speedsters. By the way, I hope Komi is playing tonight and takes out that goof Lindros; i.e.- knocks him into next year.:hlogo:

Good Point! Plus the fact that Calgary and a few other teams are not too happy with their goaltending.

I would only hope that the Montreal fans do not get on Jose's case and start the booing. Without Jose the team is going nowhere in my humble little mind. :hockey:

I agree 100%. Our goaltending situation is solid and shouldn't be taken for granted. We have a top-shelf goalie locked up for the next few years and I for one, am thankful for that. Most teams in this league would kill for our goaltending. I believe Jose can,and will take us all the way, sooner or later.:hlogo:
