  1. Good game, good win. But as pessimistic as it'll sound, with equal goaltending that would have been a close game. We aren't going to score on every second shot every game. I'm hoping for better general play next time as last game we allowed more good scoring chances than the other team just Huet stopped ours and their goalies let them in. Against NJ, it's us with the weaker goaltender so we'll have to limit their scoring chances and capitalize on ours just like we did last night.

I agree, but I think the boys became a little careless at times because of the big lead.

    Nice shots, ForumGhost!

  2. however I feel sorry for the guy for the way it was handled.

Much agreed. Peddie is classless. And the whole organization is one leaky ship when it comes to the media - the status of Fletcher's talks with the Leafs was being updated by the minute, it seems. :nono:

  3. I'll add this for the benefit of those of us in southern Ontario - my understanding is that the CBC does not black out nationally televised games. So, although we'll be inflicted with regional coverage of the Leafs on the 'regular' CBC station, the Habs game can be accessed (if you have digital cable) via other CBC channels across the country.

  4. I believe that was how it was supposed to be all along was it not?

Don't believe so. The original post was a reference to an opinion piece that Houston did, saying the Leafs shouldn't be the national game all the time. This article confirms a recent CBC decision to make Habs-Pens the national game on Saturday, due to their position in the standings relative to the Toronto-Buffalo matchup.

  5. I don tthink that ferguson is the REAL problem is TO. Ok he's never going to blow you away on a trade but I'm sure even Sam Pollock couldn't be as productive in such an environment.

The management of the team is as dysfunctional as in the Ballard era.

I montreal you know the structure:

    carbonneau

    gainey

    Boivin

    Gillett.

    how about TO?

    Maurice

    ferguson

    petty and two other guys

    Teacher mutual fund

    school teachers.

as long as the structure of the team will be as blurred, Toronto will never be able to succeed.

I've heard the theory for awhile in these parts (near T.O.) that the majority owner (Ontario teacher's pension fund), or the ownership structure, is the problem. If any other owner provides all the money the organization wants and doesn't interfere in the running of the club, they're lauded as being an ideal owner (like Gillette).

Sure, the teacher's pension fund can be ultimately blamed for everything, but they're not the ones who hired and stubbornly stuck by JFJ even when it was apparent he was dropping the ball - Peddie is. Blame the board for putting Peddie in charge, I guess. And JFJ is the guy who traded quality picks and prospects for Raycroft, and then signed him to an absurd contract extension without needing to (after he was coming off a bad year in Boston.) He did the same with Toskala, although it's worked out somewhat better, but it was unnecessary. Did JFJ need to overpay for McCabe, Kubina, Antropov, Tucker, Domi, etc.? I don't think the teacher's board told him to do that.

If the teachers fund tells the team management that they need to make the playoffs in order to get a couple dates of playoff revenue (as is speculated sometimes), then that would be a valid criticism of them as owners. This would sacrifice long term planning in favour of short term stop gaps. However, I haven't heard of real evidence of this. Besides, there are other ways to try to make the playoffs then to overpay to keep players in Toronto, especially ones that aren't that good.

I think most of the blame CAN be laid at the feet of Ferguson. He was an inexperienced GM in this league coming in, and failed to grasp the implications of the new salary cap (namely, how amassing young, cheap talent through drafts or trades is the key to success).

  6. i don't like it that they're not going good. Put you're hatred for the leafs a side habs fans, the nhl needs a strong leafs team just like they need a strong canadiens team. Hockey can't afford them being this bad. its not good for the overall brand.

On the contrary, if there is a market in the NHL that can 'afford' a bad team (financially, they still rake in millions of profits regardless of the on-ice product), it's Toronto. Sure, with a good team, the market would be even stronger, but the NHL as a whole has managed okay despite the Leafs' incompetence, both in the Ballard era and today.

  7. I dont know... still anything is possible (for the habs sake) if this planet doesn't explode in 6 years I can see a 28-29 year-young ovechkin at 10 mil, earning far less than crosby who by then is at 15-17 mil much more attractive as trade matter for the habs! remember Luongo! he loved it there the first 3 years in florida! Then the losing after losing took its toll

I think Ovy in the not so near future wont be as impossible to trade as we see it now!

You're assuming that the cap will continue to rise as it has in the last few years. I'm skeptical this will happen. I think a good portion of the increase was due to the strength of the Cdn dollar (i.e. Cdn teams revenues translated to USD to calculate the cap). The cap may rise significantly for next year because of this, but after that, who knows? The Cdn dollar seems to have peaked (and slid back of late). That leaves it to higher ticket prices, TV deals, merchandise sales etc. to generate increases. This might depend on U.S.-based franchises, because I have to believe Canadian teams are close to a threshold where they can't generate much more. (In fact, their biggest market, Toronto, might see a modest decrease in something like merchandise sales, if team performance - fingers crossed - continues as it has).

I'd be surprised to see any double digit increases in salary cap after next year; my guess is 4-6% at best. If that's the case, Crosby and Ovechkin won't be as far apart as you might think.

  8. It was clean. He was just trying to get by McCabe who was the one pinching up and trying to hit Kostitsyn.

Its not even a penalty. McCabe tryed to hit Koistityn and Kostitsyn tried to avoid it. I dont see how you think that would be a penalty. You must be a Leafs fan if you think that that was penalty.

Yeah, it was a pretty harmless play. I've looked at some Leafs message boards and heard from Toronto sports radio, and nobody seems to think it was a dirty play. Even Ferguson Jr. thought it was OK. Maurice overreacted, probably out of frustration at his team's play. I hope to see him frustrated a few more times this year.

  9. I dont know if it has to do with me being a swede or whatever but I'd pick Sundin any day.

You Swedes are always picking each other - it's not fair. Like that team that won the Olympics... what were they called again? Oh yeah - Team Sweden. The coach was a Swede, and who'd he pick? Nothing but Swedes. The fix was in!

    :P

Seriously, yeah, Sundin would be my pick too (I'm Dutch, so there's no chance that I'm biased). I've watched too many Toronto games, and lots of Montreal games, and it's not a particularly tough choice. Sundin is bigger, stronger, and just more effective in his primary role as an offensive player. And when it matters most, he finds a way of coming through (more OT winners in his career than any other player, I believe). Koivu is a player I like, admire, respect, ... and I don't like Sundin at all due to his jersey, so it pains me to say it, but Sundin is the better player.

  10. okay if harper is doing so great then why isn't the conservative party polling crazy numbers?

Guarantee you that's what the Liberals will run on because Liberals created this economy as well.

The Conservative party may not be polling "crazy" numbers, but they're not much different from the numbers that gave them a minority government. So it's unlikely to lead to a change in government, which was the point being made.

Also, I doubt that the Liberals will run on the economy, because Harper has "been in charge for a long time now", as you mentioned in a previous post. To the minimal extent that there is a connection made, the Liberal contribution to the economy won't be seen as having much to do with Dion.

  11. Some of you might find that i'm being too negative, but I think I'm more of a realist. If the boys don't start scoring 5 on 5, i predict we will have the same kind of "choke-fest" as we saw after Dec. 23rd last year.

I hope it doesn'T happen, but until they figure out how to score 5 on 5...i will remain very worried!!!

I'm on your side. Although the team has changed somewhat from last year, a couple things remain the same:

    - over-reliance on the powerplay for offence

    - over-reliance on exceptional goaltending (mind you, I love that Price and Huet are playing so well, but a truly dangerous/contending team has more than that going for them). If one or the other, or both, slip even slightly, so will the Habs.

I thought Lats was OK on the Koivu line, and would like to see that experiment continued. He should get even better as he becomes more comfortable with his linemates.

Plekanecs has more to give, and I'd like to see him start giving it.

I thought Brisebois played with some smarts and composure, defensively. A pleasant surprise.

I hope O'Byrne is progressing quickly, because many of the defencemen we have cannot handle the Leafs forwards.

  12. How does amortization work in the Canadian Tax Code? I'm sure that CHC gets to depreciate the building against its corp taxes... I'd imagine that is a pretty big tax deduction. Anybody know what kind of schedule CHC is amortizing on? I think in the US it would be like 25 year straight line for this kind of building, which would be like a $9-10 mil tax deduction.

Are the habs pleading poverty or inequity? Is CHC saying that they are in the red because of the property taxes?

I believe the Habs can amortize the building at 4% declining balance.

From what I've read, they're pleading inequity. No way can they still be in the red. I read somewhere that they now have the second highest estimated operating earnings in the league, behind TML (I think it was that Forbes ranking of teams).

It'll be interesting to see if the City of Montreal cares what other NHL cities charge for property tax.

  13. that's disgusting. I had those type's of laws. I don't understand why they can't just invest a little more money into making sure that the people they put in charge of staffing are aren't racist.

I don't get it. They trust jurors in court to be impartial but they can't trust the people in charge of hiring police officers.

I'm pretty sure the hiring officers are following the guidelines handed down by their bosses.

  14. 10-4-3

    Shut up!

Does that record remind you of anything... last year, maybe?

I'm sure if I was negative after a loss, I would be accused of overreacting, so I might as well be after a win. This has been going on for a couple weeks, though. It's a matter of time before these near-wins turn into near-losses. In particular, the power play will not remain as the leagues best, as it's been in disarray for a couple of games but has still managed to get a couple thanks to Markov.

I can't help but feel that this is 2006-07 (and 2005-06, for that matter) all over again. Hope I'm wrong, of course, but that's my impression.

  15. While we're on the subject, has anyone got any thoughts on WHY the Leafs are so tough for us to beat?

    1. We can't handle their big guys when they're cycling. The only response would be using our speed combined with good outlet passing. However...

    2. We're not as fast as a team as some want to believe, and the passing is horrible when the Leafs have their forecheck going. The only D with any composure are Markov and Hamrlik.
