  1. and? i don't care about other Canadian teams. Ottawa and Toronto might fly their plane on each others and i won't blink an eye (ok maybe i'd blink)

It's ALL about Montréal for me!!!!

I share those sentiments, but if you don't care about other Canadian teams, why does it make you smile that Montreal is the last CANADIAN team to win the Cup? At best it's a useless fact, and at worst it reminds me how long it's been - neither are smile-inducing.

  2. And, for those who want the Cup back to Canada : I'm totally against that !!! Montréal is the last Canadian team who won the Cup and everytime i remember this, it puts up a smile on my face

I might agree, if the time since the last Cup was shorter. But it's been 14 years. At this point, it's nothing to be happy about as a Habs fan, and pretty embarrassing for teams from Canada generally.

  3. I have no worries on the stock anyway nor the other one, even though it goes against my environmental views. Lets just say everytime oil goes up I do a little jig. :P

I need the money, I'm a freaking college student.

Tsk, tsk - sacrificing your principles in favour of the almighty dollar! Are you an investor in Haliburton, too? ;)

  4. That was a fun game to watch! The 'Dogs are playing very good playoff hockey: working hard at cycling the puck in the offensive zone, and doing well at limiting the chances defensively.

    The most notable players:

    - Carey Price: wow! It's already been said before, but this kid seems absolutely unflappable in net (nonchalant, even), and can come up with the big save after several minutes of seeing little action. He is a wall.

    - although perhaps it's to be expected given his experience, Mathieu Biron made a positive impression. At his size, it might be expected that he would throw some big hits, but he's not that kind player at all. He did use his reach very well to intercept/deflect passes, and was very good at keeping the opponent to the perimeter. His outlet passes were very good, too. He obviously has the confidence of the coach, as he played in all crucial situations (PK, PP). I was also happy to seem him taking a leadership role - directing traffic during the PK, etc. - which a player like him should do. Hopefully he'll get a solid shot with the Habs next season.

    - Kyle Chipchura. Just by being smart with the puck and keeping his legs moving, he drew 3 Chicago penalties. He also generated sustained pressure in the offensive zone by protecting the puck well, and working hard at the cycle. His skillset is nothing fancy, but he's extremely effective. Chicago was trying to goad him into a penalty on several ocassions, but he maintained his composure. Just a smart hockey player.

To the finals - Go 'Dogs Go!

  5. http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/attendance?year=2007

Was looking at those figures, and Nashville had to lowest road average attendance in the league. That's interesting to me, they're a good team. I'd think crappy teams would be the ones with the worst road attendance. Ottawa is 5th worst, and here they are in the finals.

Actually, it was Tampa Bay that was lowest, with Nashville 2nd (you probably missed TB because they're near the top of home attendance)... which is interesting too, given that they were the eventual SC champions.

  6. I agree that Waterloo by itself may not be able to support a team; but if your from the area then you would know that all the cities around Waterloo can be included into the mix. The Waterloo Region. includes many cities.. Cambridge, Kitchener, Guelph are just a few of the big ones that will certainly contribute to ticket sales.. and there are companies with big names in the region that will step up and support a team.

Waterloo Region includes K-W and Cambridge, and a bunch of small towns. That's about 500,000 people, and adding Guelph, we're up to 625,000. The bulk of the rest of the residents within a 1-hour commute are at points east (your neck of the woods - Mississauga, etc.), and I think it's a stretch that they'll come this way in significant numbers. Corporate-wise, things really drop off once you get beyond RIM, Sun Life, Manulife, and Toyota. Let's not forget that we haven't even discussed the need to build an NHL-sized arena, and generate an appropriate return on it.

To me, based on this cursory look, the numbers seem to be too lean to move a team here. Since I have no stake in Balsillie's financial outcome, I would also welcome the attempt and wish him well if that's what he wants to do.

  7. I'll always regret not making it to Montreal to take in a game at the Forum. I've been to the Olympia and Maple Leaf Gardens. It's been so long, I can't remember much about the Olympia, but I remember MLG. Unimpressive. I thought it was a dump, actually. This was during the Ballard years, so I'm sure he was putting a lot of money into it to make it look nice. (insert eye-rolling smilie here, once it's working!)

  8. if it went to Kitchner-Waterloo. They'd probably go the Ontario Predators route.

NYI is in a bedroom community.

NJ is in a bedroom community for Philadelphia now.

Florida is in a bedroom community in Broward County Florida

Ottawa's arena is in the suburbs.

... and Ottawa is the only one of those that is doing quite well in attendance. The greater Ottawa population is approaching 1 million; Waterloo region has 500,000... a big difference.

  9. The idea of the team moving to the Kitchener-Waterloo area seems absurd to me. I'm sure it's a nice place to live, and yes, the regions population is growing. But, it has ZERO marquee value. Can you imagine a game at Madison Square Garden between the Rangers and the K-W Whatevers, talk about bush league. It sounds lower than the AHL. I think owners from big time cities like Philly, NY, Boston, and even Montreal might have a problem with a team moving to what is basically a big "bedroom" community. Someone earlier posted a rant about how important an area K-W may be, I'm not disputing that, but perception from the rest of the continent is alot different.

As a resident of the K-W area... I completely agree. As was mentioned during the Pittsburgh drama, the league owners have to approve any relocation, and I really doubt they would give it a go-ahead when there's more well-known (and more heavily populated) cities available.

The only foundation (as far as I know) for the rumours of the team relocating to K-W seem to be that Jim Balsillie lives here: "I want a team in my back yard!" (stomps feet). As an astute businessman, he knows it doesn't matter where HE is, the team has to go where it will be successful. Although we have a decent and growing economy, I just don't think the corporate support will be at the levels necessary to support a team. I question the fan support, too. People say that although the region has a relatively small population, there are 1 million people (or whatever) within a 1 hour drive... trouble is, you can't count on significant numbers to drive to the games on a regular basis, especially early on (after the novelty wears off) when the team hasn't established a place in their hearts and minds. People would still rather go see the Leafs (for unknown reasons) who are also within an hours' drive for most of the 1 million.

  10. How can the Habs make a last ditch effort for Souray when talks probably didn't even began or are in the preliminary process ?

Agreed - more Eklund nonsense. From now 'til June 30th is an eternity - lots of time to overpay (that one's for you, Chris!). Last I heard Gainey was waiting for the results of his physical after his surgery.

  11. I wouldn't mind seeing Ottawa win. It would be overstating it to say I'm rooting for them, as I'm mostly indifferent. I'm just kind of sick of seeing teams from the sunbelt win. The fact that Ottawa is in Canada has zero to do with it - the only true Canadian team I know of is Team Canada.

More than anything, I'm cheering for a long series and good hockey, to reduce the withdrawal symptoms I'll experience through the summer...

  12. I've had a hernia, me thinks that's worse.

I've had a hernia too, and I guess the severity would vary from person to person, but it didn't cause me much trouble at all. In fact, I delayed surgery a couple months so I could finish the hockey season (my doctor didn't recommend playing hockey with a hernia... but he didn't recommend NOT playing!).

I'm thinking a groin tear is worse.

  13. Well - I have opinions but I'm never so arrogant as to think they are the absolute & definitive statement.

So I just end it with a question mark - like this? :D

Don't worry - as soon as we see 'beliveau1', we know it won't be the absolute and definitive statement.

    Kidding, kidding. :D

  14. Well I'll be back in about 10 days - I'm going fishing in northern Ontario. Off to the cottage for our annual spring time walleye trip. No TV so it will be hard to follow the playoffs - radio reception isn't the greatest there?

Talk to ya later gang...... as if I'll by missed all that much right?:)

Have fun! I'll miss all those statements with question marks at the end. I guess somebody will have to pick up the slack while you're gone? ^_^
