  1. I hate how rich people get such special treatment when it comes to crimes. If someone in my neighborhood killed their wife and tried to hide the body, it wouldn't be all over the news like Laci Peterson. If somebody kidnapped someone in my neighborhood, it wouldn't be international news like this. But because the people affected are rich, they get all this coverage. Just not fair.

I didn't know Laci Peterson was rich. I think her story, like this one, received more attention because a child was involved (an unborn one, in Laci's case). I also don't see any indication that the couple in this case were rich - only that they happened to attract a rich businessman's interest, who put up the million pound reward. Doing that is designed to get media attention.

That's not to say I disagree with your point, but not sure if it applies here.

  2. So the Greens are more of a threat to the Conservative party.

We're looking at a Liberal-Green Coalition minority government. A first for Canada but its the future of politics.

    That's what I see coming.

Anything is possible, but I don't see it happening. Until I see the Greens translate percentages into seats, I'm skeptical of their chances. All of the mainstream parties are tripping over themselves to come up with 'green' platforms, and at election time, voters will wonder why they should vote for a party which is seen as representing only that issue, when they can vote for a mainstream party and cover that base along with many others.

I also think the Greens are capable of causing some vote-splitting on the left. It has less to do with their actual (centrist) policies than the profile of voter they attract. IMO, the Greens are like a protest vote against the status quo, and will attract young, less well-off voters who would otherwise likely support the NDP, or perhaps Liberals. The Conservatives are most immune to losing votes to Green, because their supporters are generally more affluent, have more stake in the status quo, and have a broader range of concerns (or if you prefer, a more self-interested range of concerns!) than just the environment. Like taxes, health care, foreign policy (war), etc.

The challenge for the Greens to get significant seats is to get their message out that they are not just a protest party, and have a plan for something other than the environment. But the odds are stacked against them, due to campaign finance rules (based on last elections' results, I believe) and strong-arming by the mainstream parties (possibly excluding them from debates, etc.)

I would never disagree with this, saku is a great player and the most inspirational player I have ever known of. However, would it not of made sense for him to take the first half of the season off and come back fully healthy? This must have been know about pre season. If it can be operated on now and be fully better for Sept., couldn't it have been done in Aug. with him returning in Jan.? team saves 2,2 vs cap, preseason!! That is big shopping money, that would have landed Shanahan at 5m instead of Samsanov at 3.5. Hind site? Maybe on my part, but the captain and GM knew back then, and a fully healthy Koivu would have probably close to matched his total half healthy stats in the back half of the season.

    How wacko is that thinking?

It's very "unique", I'll say that!

First you described him as dead weight that should be moved out so the kids could play. Now, you say he should have had surgery later, so he could miss more of the season, giving us cap room to get a better player.

You are assuming that the story about Shanahan turning down a better offer from Montreal because he wanted to play in NY is false. You are also assuming Koivu was not fully healthy at the start of the season; as far as I know, he was (his eye will never be as good as it was, but it was as good as it was going to get).

Most importantly, the reason why teams sign players like Koivu is so they can play hockey, not so they can be paid by insurance while recovering. Having surgery later and missing half the season makes no sense, because his play had value throughout the season. Either he's a player worth keeping or he's not - if not, get rid of him and free up the whole $4.5 million cap space. If he is, schedule surgery in the off-season so he can play. Seems like an obvious point, no?

  4. Come on man lighten up on the parents. They were at a resort (felt safe) and left thier kids 100 meters away. Your parents never left you 100 feet from thier sight at a movie theatre or the mall.

    I hope she is found.

100 feet is a lot different than 100 metres. You can't see or hear the kids when they're 100 metres away. Either way, as a parent I wouldn't leave my 3 year old (and younger) kids unsupervised where I couldn't at least hear them, even at home. Resorts aren't known to be particularly safe (especially Mexican resorts for Canadians lately, it seems).

  5. I don't move Price for him, but everyone else is fair game.

Actually, I'd be surprised if TB wanted Price all that bad, unless they believe he'll be NHL-ready next year. With St. Louis and Richards in their prime, they need to get a proven yet inexpensive goaler in net NOW, not in 2-4 years. Huet is the closest we have to that. Plekanec seems a logical part of this trade, too (I'm suspending my disbelief and assuming the possibility of such a blockbuster is logical in the first place!).

  6. I *really* question that $3.4M figure. His agent must not know what the currency exchanges are if he thinks one can simply double the American currency to calculate the Russian or Canadian currency. ;-)

I think that it's intended to account for the tax rates here, which would be close to 50% for high income earners.

It still comes down to the simple fact that the player has to want to sign here no matter what you might offer? :(

True - which means it's not necessarily about greed. If offered equal money, I suspect most Europeans would choose to work closer to home, enjoying the language/culture they're used to. In Perezhogin's case, the team closest to home also happened to be offering much more money too, which I suspect made it an easy decision.

  7. Lets hope Ek is just stabbing in the dark here, but he doesn't report many rumours on the Habs so it makes me wonder....

On the contrary, I've seen quite a few. Among others, he was constantly telling us where Souray was going, and now is (again) talking about Vinny to the Habs. The only transactions he doesn't predict are the ones that actually happen (e.g. Rivet)...

  8. As for the Price being moved, there is no way you trade a possible franchise goalie for anyone. Especially ast age 19.

    See the Patrck Roy trade.

That trade didn't turn out too well.

Patrick Roy had won 2 Stanley Cups when he was traded - how can you compare Price's accomplishments with that?

At the end of the day, right now we need scoring, but have 2 NHL-calibre goalies (Huet, Halak) and Price, who is a potential NHL-calibre goalie. You trade your depth in one position for your needs in another.

  9. windsor is basically Detroit. Heck they don't even follow canadian teams. They're all Tiger/Lions/Red Wings fans. Just a suburb of Detroit.

Drove by London, too much of a farming centre reminds me of what I'm moving away from.

Did you form your impressions of Windsor because you drove by it, too?

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing...

  10. Yeah, I would give Price in a Lecavalier deal but we'd have to give something else (Kovalev?) to even out salary. I don't believe it though - Feaster is not willing to trade Lecavalier.

The whole point from TB's perspective is to NOT even out salary - unless they're getting several excellent prospects (instant organizational depth). I wouldn't think they'd have interest in Kovalev.

  11. Yea, i think they are funny too. So I'll open another can of worms it mentioned tampa moving Lacallier for Price.

    That would insanity.

Price will be a Stud goaltender.

Maybe he will... but you gotta give quality to get quality. We have goaltending depth, but getting a top scorer today would sure be nice.
