  1. I thought the whole album was fantastic, it was considered one of the best rock albums of 2007. If you liked Pretender and Let It Die then definitely check it out.

Has it been out that long already? I guess it has. Anyway, thanks for the opinion - I'll have to get it.

  2. Houle remains without question one of the worst GMs in the history of the NHL.... The only rival in recent memory is the guy in Boston who pissed away Joe Thornton.

Somewhere Mike Milbury is mad as hell that you ignored him. :P

  3. My last purchase was The Essential Alice in Chains. Some great stuff, since I didn't really get into them when they were current. This probably won't be a widely-held opinion, but I think they would be even better if they made less use of harmonies and just let Staley sing.

From the radio, I've really enjoyed some of the Foo's latest singles, especially The Pretender and Let It Die. Has anybody listened to Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace - and can let me know how the rest of it is?

  4. Sundin is a perennial underachiever. However I'd take him in a heart beat at the maximum allowed salary.

Being in Leaf country I've seen Sundin play a lot, and yes, he is that good. Sundin can pretty much score at will, at least when he wants to.

Out of all the players I seriously believe that back in the day Sundin could have actually put up Lemieux and Gretzky type stats only he doest seem to always try as hard nor has he had the advantage of playing with Hall of Fame linemates like 66 & 99 had.

An underachiever? I don't see that. He's one of the few guys who gives a consistent effort out there for the Leafs, regardless of how futile it is to do so. It's absolutely true that he hasn't often had decent linemates, but he's no Gretzky or Lemieux either. Sundin is less about on-ice vision and more about overpowering the defence all around the net, not to mention a great shot.

I'd agree that if the Habs can get him, get it done.

  5. A big win for TSN, as they bought themselves an identity. I'm not upset the CBC didn't pay 'whatever it takes' to keep it, though. A public network has an obligation to treat tax dollars with respect - and we all know they won't lose 1 viewer because the theme song is different.

I like tradition as much as the next guy, but it's pretty easy to get carried away with sentimentality when things change, as many seem to be doing. A few weeks ago, I wonder what the result would be if Canadians were asked what 'made' HNIC. I'm guessing Coaches Corner/Don Cherry, the Hotstove, Bob Cole, Ron McLean, the logo, and yes, the theme song would all be mentioned, but I doubt the theme song would be in the top 3.

At the end of the day, it's still a song that will be associated with Canadian hockey, and with a network that will be increasingly a part of our viewing habits due to the new deal with TSN. I think the adjustment will be rather painless.

  6. I'm surprised at how many fans still underestimate the "professionalism" - not to say businesslike cynicism - of most atheletes. People talk as though Sundin is a True Blue Maple Leaf who, if he goes the UFA route, won't be able to "stand" playing for their biggest rival (and incidentally, Detroit is almost as hated a traditional rival as Montreal in TO). Or they think Koivu will hate him because of the Leafs days, or even his Swedishness. Or, for that matter, they talk as though Vinnie Lecavalier is just DYING to play for his "beloved" hometown Habs.

Wake up and smell the 8-million-dollar latte, folks. Sundin is a pro and this is a business decision, full stop. If he becomes a UFA he almost certainly will play with ANYONE who a) pays him a huge amount and b) gives him a chance to win. Koivu and Kovalev will do handstands at the acquisition of a player who gives THEM a chance to win. Much in the same way, I seriously doubt that Lecavalier gives a rat's ass about the :hlogo: - if he leaves TB it will be for similar reasons (money + chance to win). If the Habs offer both, plus maybe a few other intangibles (such as an attractive city) he'll sign with us; if not, he won't. C.f. Daniel Briere. Players are loyal to a sweater for nothing more than the duration of their contracts. It amazes me, frankly, that fans don't have the same attitude - loyalty to players for that same duration.

I agree that many fans get hung up on sentimentality or emotional connections. However, I think it's fair to say that Sundin would be hesitant to sign with the Habs, for the self-interested reason of his legacy. Having spent so long in Toronto, having denied them the chance to gain valuable return at the trade deadline, I know many Leafs fans and, quite likely, management, will be pissed off if he then decided to sign with a main rival. It would be a serious tarnish an otherwise unblemished Leafs' career in the minds of many fans. There are bound to be many teams interested in his services on July 1, and I would be surprised if he chose us if there's similar money available elsewhere, as there surely will be.

  7. Where have u been the last couple of months? Said that the domain-name was for sale and lots of stuff.

btw... maybe would be good to move this topic to some other place than habs talk, sorry bout that.

Seconded (although I think it was only a week or two - it just seemed longer).

Congrats and thanks to Matt for getting things back.

  8. If Huet was with the team the decision to annoint Price the starter would not have been made and they would still be 1 and 1A.

So the criteria and decision making would be totally different.

The Habs made the decision to annoint Price the starter, they essentially put all their eggs in his basket. And Halak seems to be an

"In case of Emergency" break glass option. They showed that down the stretch giving Price all the must wins and lobbing the gimmes

at Halak. They stuck by him in the Boston series and they will do so again tonight.

If he shits the bed again tonight you will see Halak in Game 5.

Good points. I would personally choose Halak, but will root for Price just as hard if he's given the nod (as I expect he will be).

I guess if it was an easy decision, Carbonneau would have immediately identified Price as the starter after game 3.

  9. I expect Carbo will go with Price again. I would go with Halak. To me, game 3 should have been Price's 'bounce-back' game after being somewhat weak in game 2, and he didn't get it done. This isn't the regular season where you can give all kinds of opportunities to get it together - we could be golfing by the time he does. A bit of a breather from the pressure-cooker might help Price out a lot, and I'm sure he would be back, refreshed, at some point if the Habs progress in the playoffs.

Also, part of the justification for dealing Huet at the deadline was that we had a great goalie in the AHL that could backup Price. If the trade hadn't happened and Huet had lost the #1 job to Price, would Huet be getting the call now? Without question - and he possibly would have seen work in the Boston series too. Halak has been solid in limited action, and has been a loyal soldier - he deserves a shot. Giving Halak a start might also serve to spark the team, as Koivu indicated.

  10. This kind of stuff is really hard to read. We've outshot them 2-1 for god's sake! There is nothing wrong with the way the team is playing. The difference is goaltending. And how you can fall for that Cherry, who carefully picks some lame shots to show and then claims that's all we're doing. And then one guy here actually said that "we're getting in Price's way" or something like that. You mean NHL goalies don't use body-positioning to block the shots they can't see!? You mean all NHL goalies see every shot that comes their way!!!!???? You mean NHL goalies give up 3 goals on 12 shots against a team that's barely pressuring them?

Wake up and smell the roses!!! I sure hope Carbo does. But please, PLEASE, DO NOT CRITICIZE THIS TEAM!!! They are playing as well as a team can play, with 6 hit goalposts so far this series, and a hot goalie against them...

    - Jack

I see nothing incorrect about what SoCalHab said - maybe YOU need to wake up. The Habs were fortunate to win game 1, deserved better in game 2, and were plain bad most of last night - down 2-1 in the series is about right. Shots on goal are meaningless if they're mostly from the perimeter, and if hitting posts counted, Kovalev would have been our leading scorer last year.

A 2 minute 5-on-3 and 1 shot on goal?? A travesty. Most of their other powerplays in the first 2 periods were equally ineffective. Price is part of the problem, but don't pretend that's where it ends.

  11. Says he wants to sign with the Leafs.

    *runs away*

What - did you get tired of penning long diatribes about a team that missed the playoffs? Now you're resorting to hit and run comments about... a team that didn't make the playoffs?

  12. So Captain, if I'm understanding you correctly, you're saying that you disagree with the decision to fire Nonis? ;)

You make a compelling (albeit lengthy) case. Just be careful - you wouldn't want your keyboardin' fingers to cramp up. Where would us Habs fans get our Canuck's information then? :P

  13. Some Boston fans are saying (hoping) it's a mirror image of 2004:

    1: Bos wins 3-0

2: Bos wins 2-1 in OT

    3: Mtl wins 3-2

... and the underdog (Montreal then, Boston now) goes on to win.

I agree with Wamsley that the goaltending advantage will prove itself over the course of the series, but it will be interesting to see how long the pattern holds.

  14. Just putting two hands together for our PM and his accomplishments ( to name a few ):

    - kicking "Canada's natural governing" party out of office

    - providing Canadians with one of the hottest economies around the world

    - reducing the GST

    - maintaining a budget surplus

    - respecting our committment to Afghanistan

    Way to go Stephen!

He's done reasonably well. Or at least not poorly enough that the Liberals think they can win. As for the accomplishments you've listed:

    - I think the voters did that

    - inherited

    - income tax cuts are more economically defensible

    - inherited (a lot easier to maintain than to get it there in the first place)

    - agreed

  15. I am monolingual with grade 11 French, and I wanted to switch to RDS anyway. I can only understand 1/4 of the vocabulary, but usually it's enough that I can follow the game. Boob Cole and Dung Cherry are a discrace to National television. It's called Hockey night in Canada, not Inept moron night in Leafland. I friggen hate both those idiots. In the 2nd and third you could tell that bastard wanted Boston to score. Couldn't get names right and didn't give the Habs credit for anything.

Apparently you need to re-read shortcat1's lecture.

I'm monolingual as well and have watched plenty of games in French (mainly when it was the only way I could see the Habs on SRC, way back when), and enjoyed it. My point wasn't to defend Bob Cole (who has certainly lost a step, but isn't nearly as bad as you've described) or Don Cherry (who I have no use for), but to point out the ridiculous characterization of monolingual people.
