  1. John Lu reported that Therrien said Parenteau is ready to play but isn't going to play him yet.

    Pacioretty-Desharnais-Gallagher

    Eller-Plekanec-Galchenyuk

    Prust-De la Rose- DSP

    Bournival-Malhotra-Weise

    Markov - Subban

    Beaulieu - Gilbert

    Gonchar - Pateryn

    Price starting

    Tokarski

    Scratches: Parenteau, Weaver

I have to say there is a lot of skill in that lineup.... Or should I say throughout that lineup.
  2. On the Eller thing: maybe there's some truth to it but if you look at the context, De La Rose's goals were to put the team up 4-1 and 5-2 respectively. If you're thinking team first then those goals aren't necessarily cause for a huge celebration. Of course, when a teammate scores his first NHL goal then I'd assume you'd want to be excited for them. With that being said, I personally think it's more likely that there was nothing personal going on there but it's definitely possible, pure speculation or not.

  3. Doesn't usually work out too well in the playoffs, that combined with lack of playoff experience. I know where I'll be putting my money come playoff time, hopefully I'll get favorable odds :) I went 7 for 8 in the first round the last two seasons and I plan on keeping it up

I'm not trying to change your mind but they do have Halak who was pretty good at keeping pucks out of the net in the playoffs once upon a time. If he plays like he wasn't a one hit wonder, then they have a chance. Much different system than the JM one though, I'm sure, and a lot of their guys lack playoff experience.
  4. It's impossible to do now. We could possibly face a Metro team in the first round if we win our division but the second round must be division vs. division.

If we end 2nd or 3rd and the Islanders/Pitts cross over into our bracket and beat 1st place then we'd meet them in the 2nd round. Of course, the Islanders or Pens would have to drop to a wildcard spot in the first place.

    ie

    1) Tampa

    2) Monteal

    3) Detroit

    4) Pitts

    1) NYR

    2) NYI

    3) Washington

    4) Philly

If Pitts beats Tampa and the Habs win, then round 2 would be Pittsburgh vs Montreal.

    Round 2: Pens/Habs & Rangers/Caps

Not very likely that it will happen with the current standings though.

  5. It's a great point. Heck, one reason we crapped out in the third round last year was because that Boston series was so incredibly intense/punishing. It makes a huge difference if you can sail through that second round relatively unscathed (remember the sweep of Buffalo in '93!).

It's an arguable point. I get it and all but it can be said the other way as well. If it's tougher for Montreal to play Tampa, than it is to play Pitts, NYI or NYR then it should be tougher for any of Pitts, NYI or the NYR to play Montreal or Tampa in the third round. The same goes for Anaheim having to face Nashville or Chicago in the third round as opposed to having played an "easier" second round opponent. Of course different teams matchup better against specific opponents but the point stands. Also, the third round was probably one of the easier rounds for the NYR last year because the Habs had such a tough second round. I did prefer the old system though because after a few years I'm really going to get tired of playing the same teams over and over again assuming things stay the same. Looking at the teams in our division though, it's hard not to see at least three of Montreal, Boston, Tampa and Detroit staying on top of the division for the next few years.

As for the East, I see 8 solid teams making the playoffs. I think the Habs are a great team and I believe they are contenders, but at the same time I don't see the East being as weak as last season. So I will be approaching this year's playoffs with caution. I think pretty much any of the 7 other teams in the playoffs right now would have a chance against the Habs. Of course, then there's Carey Price to shut down that theory! :habslogo:

  6. Not asking for superstars on bottom six positions Don.

Talking about having a fourth line for the play offs that is not made up of 9 bulldogs.

We had a pretty good 4th line made up of vets at the beginning of the season before we made some trades. Management's decision I guess.

I thought it was a decent first period as well. Kind of reminded me of a playoff game actually. Detroit's arena is one of the toughest places to be successful in the league.

  7. Pacioretty - Desharnais - Weise

    Galchenyuk - Plekanec - Gallagher

Soon to be traded - De La Rose - Thomas

    Prust - Malhotra - Bournival

9 goals this season in 49 games. 5 are game winners. Weird value to his game on the offensive side of things. He has the worst +/- on the team out of our regulars so I don't know why people even bring up his defensive game. I really do think it'll be nice having him in the playoffs though. There'd be a lot of uncertainty heading into the playoffs without Bourque, Moen and Eller. I know (I said it) but they were our playoff performers last year after all (not so much Moen). I wouldn't be upset to see him go if it fills a void we're looking for though. I'd still rather see Desharnais go if we're even talking about packaging some players out for a nice return. He should have decent value as well. I'm also not trying to advocate trading either of them. I trust the right thing will be done and do agree that it's probably more likely Eller would be moved out of the two, especially from our end of things.

As for the game itself, I think we might actually win this one by a few goals. If the past is any indication of the future, then we shouldn't but I'll go out on a limb and say we win by at least 2-3 tonight.

  8. Personally I know next to nothing about advanced stats but it does seem like they are skewed a bit. Your example is similar to how these Habs play. They rarely ever just throw the puck on net or take low quality shots.

They did take quite a few the other day in our 6-2 win against New Jersey because of the goalie who was in net. That was supposedly the game plan. Be aggressive and shoot from everywhere. I get what you're saying in general though. When I read the comment about the Russian team, I thought about how the Habs play a strong possession game in overtime especially. It's a solid plan. Seems like we control the puck a lot more than other teams and it must have to do with our solid record in the extra frame.

  9. I made the argument a few weeks ago that Pacioretty is a Top 10 LW for sure, arguably Top 5.

Ovechkin, Nash and Zetterberg are the Top 3 in the league. Then you have a pool of players ranging from Parise to Pacioretty to Hall to Benn to Steen to Sharp to Sedin to JVR to Ladd for the next spots, followed by some "hot season" guys like Foligno, Schwartz, Versteeg, Palat and Saad.

Where you feel Pacioretty falls in the big group decides whether or not he's Top 5 at #4 or #5 but I don't see there being 10 LWs better than him.

I'm not looking at any stats right now and I know I probably should but...

    1) Nash

    2) Ovechkin

    3) Zetterberg

    4) Pacioretty

    5) Parise

    6) Benn

    7) Sharp

    8) Hall

    9) Sedin

    10) Steen

    11) Foligno

    12) Ladd

    13) JVR

The only thing is that I based most of those on this season and the future other than for Foligno. He'd be higher. I could also argue Patches at #3.

  10. It's amazing how amazing Pacs is. I'm starting to agree that he's almost as important as Price and perhaps even more important than Subban. I'm one of the few who picked Subban as being the most untouchable just earlier this season so it's a tougher one for me than it should be. He's truly developed into a force though. No matter how you break it down, Price, Subban and Patches are all all stars.

Hopefully the Habs DO break a sweat tonight because not breaking a sweat is usually what they do as they watch a bottom feeder beat them up . I do have a good feeling about this one though so hopefully all goes to plan.

    :habslogo:

  11. All I can say is that I'm really happy we have Carey Price. I was thinking last game how I as a fan am so much more calm when he's in net. I'm fine living without that "cardiac kids" feeling until the playoffs. Tokarski is great and all but it's a different feeling for me when he's in net.

As for the topic. I still think it's very unlikely that he wins the Hart but the more time has been passing by the more he has given people a reason to discuss him as a candidate this year. That's for sure.

I'd take Carey Price over any other single player in the league right now.

Call me crazy, but I think Crosby would have at least as much of a chance of bringing a cup to Montreal as Price does. If not more. I still think Crosby is probably the second best player ever and he knows how to win. He's quietly 4th in league scoring and it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up winning the race. Might not win the Hart "because he has Malkin". There are lot of good reasons that some elite players shouldn't win the Hart I guess.

  12. lol so what? he was drafted to be the habs future number one center.

LOL ........ "its safer on wing he wont get run over" ??????????? hey play him less too, its safer. meybe dont dress him some nights....that even safer.

"Future number one center" I guess the future hasn't come yet. He'll be our number one center soon enough and then every point made here about how he "hasn't been already" or "never will be" will be moot.
  13. Almost every coach in the NHL tweaks their lines on a nightly basis and within games. Of all the criticisms of Therrien, that is the most pointless.

I think it's one of the most pertinent criticisms because the lineup and line combinations are really one of the only areas that is strictly a coach's decision. You do want to change your lines, especially within the game itself but I do believe there is a point where a coach can actually overdo it, especially prior to games. Perhaps the NHL is changing, I could agree with that with the amount of teams who are spreading their talent throughout the lineup. Goalies are pulled earlier than they ever were and perhaps it's been decided that the recipe for success is a balanced lineup rather than a clear 1st line, so I agree that things are changing and perhaps a coach has to be more proactive in lineup management than in the past. I think many teams still have at least a star or two on the first two lines but the difference between the first and fourth lines has become much less than in the past. Coaches also have to matchup their lines home and away and depending on the strengths of their opponent.

Now with that being said, I used to come on here even a few years ago and I can assure you that our lines were kept intact throughout the season a lot more than they are nowadays. The main time our lineup was changed were when a top player was slumping or when we wanted to put a goon in (now becoming more obsolete). The question is then is it Therrien who changes the lines so often or is the league changing? A combination of both? Either way, even if it is changing, then coaching is even more important than it ever has been when it comes to lineup decisions and if things don't go well then the coach definitely is the one who deserves to take the heat in this specific area; not the players who don't have time to develop chemistry with a linemate. In addition, he deserves just as much credit when things go well.

  14. "Price is now tied for fourth on the Canadiens' all-time wins list with Bill Durnan with 208 victories."

Hmm is that not a crazy stat? It seems like he still has a lot left in him. I guess we can start naming hockey arenas around the Montreal area after Price already.

    http://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/teams/montreal-canadiens-goalies-career-nhl-stats.html

Dryden was a beast. I think it's crazy how many of our goalies have been Canadian born throughout our history. 44 Canadian goalies, 2 Slovaks, 2 Americans, 1 Swiss and 1 French goalie out of goalies who have played more than 5 games. Even on the second page, 20 of the next 25 were Canadian. This also includes all the backups we've had.

  15. Hopefully we can keep up the good play against the Bruins from earlier this year. I remember after demolishing them in our last game against them, I browsed a few Bruins forums and their fans were really down on this year's version of their team. The Bruins have been playing relatively well as of late by the looks of it and I'm sure their fans have a short memory so here's to hoping we can put them in their place once again.

  16. Well the reason I said that is we get less P/P opportunities than other teams. Therefore we need a higher %. If the refs would give us a little more opportunities, then the % can go down. I would be very happy with 25% but I probably would be happy with 20%. I am happy as long as the damn thing works and wins us games. I am not happy when we go 0 for 5 and lose by 1 goal.

Not sure why you would be. I'm not happy when we go 2 for 4 and lose by one goal either.

  17. Good job boys. Still one period to go but I was ready to post that we need to have that killer instinct when it comes to having the opportunity to go up by a couple of goals instead of just one. It seems like too often we don't pot that extra one when given a golden opportunity (such as a late powerplay). I'm generally Mr. Positive and all but like I said, it seems like we don't put teams away early often enough.

Here's to hoping we keep it up in the third. If so, we'll definitely be alright.

  18. It is one of those games that has that eerily negative vibe surrounding it. As was said, the Rangers do match up well against us lately but I like that the game is on the road in this situation. The longer we can play a solid road game and keep the game close, the more the odds will sway in our favor. Hoping for a decent first period.

Final thought: I think our second line (AG, DD, BG) will be our best tonight.
