I am asking because I proposed a trade to take on Kerfoot’s “bad contract” but realized after he has similar stats to Byron
I really don’t know how to get the scoring power RW I think we need
Well you can look at team's ready to make changes to their core after years of early playoff exits, or other middle of the pack team's that what to make changes. So I think those team's would be
Calgary
Edmonton
Toronto
Minnesota
San Jose
Florida
Arizona
Pittsburgh
Buffalo
New Jersey
Nashville
Jets
Ducks
I think these are the team's who will try and make changes and would take on a guy like Domi or even a package deal like a Domi/Byron.
Kings
Detroit
Ottawa
I think are rebuilding so won't take on salary but more draft picks and prospects,
I would take Arizona out because I don't think they would want Domi back and I would take the leaf's and Jets out as I think they're looking for top line D and not a guy like Domi. Calgary is going to land hall so I don't think They would want Domi.
So the team's that might be interested in a trade with us for Domi and/or Byron i think are
Ducks
Minnesota
San Jose
Edmonton
Buffalo
New jersey
Nashville
Florida
Pittsburgh
These team's would be a good starting point to see what kind of trade We could work out.
One idea I was thinking was a trade with Boston " I know will never happen " but I was thinking this
To Boston
Domi + a 4th turns into a 3rd if we resign Krug.
To habs
Rights to Krug + Ritchie
Ritchie could turn into Bergevin favorite low risk high reward type of deal.

Honestly, I would rather try to trade Dome and Poehling to a team that has cap issues, and keep Byron. The speed is good!
Byron been to inconsistent since he was given that contract. Don't think we need him as much anymore. Would rather free up that cap space for someone else.

-Weal over Evans at C? I dont think so. I wouldnt be suprised if Weal is waived or dumped
-Byron is the perfect bottom 6 player. I think hes an integral piece right now to a team built on speed. (one of the fastest players in the league)
-Dadanov is a great RW that id be interested in at the right price/ term
-Toffoli is to soft and a perimeter player for my liking (we have that type of player already) no thanks
-Tatar Danault Gallagher are established as a top line 5on5. I think they stick together as we try and add to the other lines.
I see the season starting with
Drouin Suzuki Armia
Tatar Danault Gallagher
Its the KK line and 4th line that will get worked on currently
Domi* KK NOBODY
Byron Evans* Lehkonan
*needs a contarct
trade bait*
Weal (possibly waived)
hudon FA offered a contract and waived
Belzile FA offered a contract and waived
I still think MB and Kovalchuk have a deal in place (wink wink/handshake deal)...
Again, just my thoughts that he will play on one wing accompanied by a substantial upgrade to the top 9 .
maybe the Russians are back in la belle province
Kovalchuk (LW)
Dadanov (RW)
Romanov (LD)
and Domi gets traded for a prospect and a pick that we are told by some MB is not in a position to trade for (a ridiculous thought btw)
Ta-Da-Ga
Dr-Su-Ar
Ko-KK-Da ( a surprisingly BIG line)
By-Ev-Le
Yeah I kinda of edited my post as you were replying to it. I took weal out and put in Poehling as that 4th line center. Would rather trade Byron and free up that cap space. I mention maybe a package deal of Domi and Byron can bring us in a top 6 LW/RW. If we land a top 6 LW/RW in trade than yeah I wouldn't go after Toffoli but I do like Dadanov a lot and think he would fit in well in our line up.

I don't see the point in trading for RNH, if our idea is that we have to trade Domi cause with Suzuki, KK, and Danault, there is no room for him as a centre in the top 9.
Here's a first I agree with you Commandant . Don't see why we trade a problem for another problem. If the habs don't see Domi as a 5mil plus type of player and feel he's expendable with the depth we now have at center then we trade Him but not for a center. All signs is Hall is going to play for his home town anyway. Theirs some really key names out in free agency i think we should target instead of Hall.
Would like to see what a package of Domi/Byron could bring us.
If we can land Krug, I would also go after Dadonov and toffoli. They will add depth and scoring to our forwards group along with who ever we can get in the Domi trade.
Tatar / Suzuki /Gallagher
Dadonov / Kotkaniemi / ?
Toffoli / Danault / Drouin
Lehkonen / Poehling / Armia
Krug / Weber
Romanov /Petry
Chiarot / Kulak

I obviously agree that a player won't sign somewhere he isn't interested in just because a buddy plays there ... but friendships could be a factor if Montreal is "in play" come the final choice ... and it could help to overcome preconceived negative notions if a buddy sells the team and city.
It happens more than you think. But obviously money and term play a bigger factor.

The latest Domi rumour ... for a pair of pending RFA’s: Matt Benning and Andreas Athanasiou ... I could see Athanasiou as a good 3rd line addition ... 20 goal scorer, fast (sort of a 2nd tier Tomas Tartar ) ... but Benning has been a 3rd pairing defenceman the last two seasons on a defence that was hardly stellar ... he got Folin/Ouellette or less minutes ... might fill the 6/7 role but overall seems a bit light for Domi ...
It sucks that his the odd man out, like him as a player and a hab.

But 5 significant UFAs to resign.
Yeah would that make this a 2 year window to compete and see what we got with this core?

Nothing guarantees playoffs. Nothing.
But Allen should significantly improve the probability of us making it into the post-season (without a qualifying round).
Yes I agree like I said he will help our chance's. But you can't just base that on his numbers, different team in front of him now. I am just saying to your point stats means shit. Look at when we signed Kinkaid, everyone thought that was enough to make the playoffs alone last year, because he would give us more wins than the other backups. He didn't last half a season and we were going to miss the playoffs.
We still need that #1 LD, and some add depth in the goal scoring department. That with Allen and Romanov should improve our team and give us better odds on making the playoffs.

I will argue that our D, when healthy, is not so terrible. Certainly not best in the league, but Weber, Petry, Chiarot and Kulak are more than credible. And we are adding Romanov into the mix next year.
Our D isn't close to as good as the Blues. Allen is a better back yes, probely the best we have had here since we traded away Halak. But that won't guarantee us a playoffs because theirs a lot of different factor's one of which is our D isn't the blues D.

Over the last three seasons:
- Price: .910/2.77
- Allen: .909/2.67
- Niemi: .909/3.10
- Lindgren: .902/3.19
- Kinkaid: .875/4.24
- Montoya: .863/3.77
Nothing is guaranteed, but Allen should enable us to win some more games, and allow Price to get the rest he needs.
Don't forget he was playing on a team with better D in front of him then he will have here in Montreal unless we upgrade.

So we traded a 3rd and a 5th for a goalie that’s a decent starting goalie, that should reasonably be a real solid backup goalie that’s capable of lessening Price’s workload without much worry? We have cap room to spare and he has 1 year left on his deal. The only downside is the cap hit, but if it wasn’t for that, he would of costed a 2nd plus.
Goaltending solved. That should almost guarantee playoffs next year. Can you imagine a well rested Price the entire season?
Nothing except death and taxes are guarantee in life. A lot can go wrong. Should it help our chance at the playoffs yes, but not guarantee it.
But with this trade we just did we cock block and crushed the hopes of teams thinking they can try and trade for PIETRANGELO. As we helped the blues clear cap space so they can resign him.
In 2021-22 we will have a lot of cap space as we have a lot of guys that have 2 years left on their contracts.

Is this because of the expansion draft? Or is he now our back up?

Last few years has been good based where they finished in the standing.
Jury is still out on Poehling and most agree that none of these is a game changer... for example, Sergachev is a stud and playing top minutes on a cup contending team; but he does not carry that team on his back.
Where a Weber, who is a second rounder, is an all start and top defender on the teams he has played in
I was talking about: Sherbak, McCarron, Galchenyuk that right now should for the core and were three straight busts.
One dud every once in a while, its ok but a bunch in a row is not.
That was more when Bergevin was still thinking old school....." size and grit still won you hockey games".
When we retool and he switch to today 's NHL with speed and skill our draft picks got better.
-
What about this for a trade,
To Wild
Domi + a 2nd round pick
To Habs
Brodin
Could be a win win for both teams. Brodin could be that perfect fit to play along side Weber.

Horrible Hockey30 rumour, that Calgary has offered Sam Bennet for Max Domi ... get real ... Bennet was a 12:31 player with the Flames, 4th line ... forgetting the tournament, Domi was a 14:45 TOI player with more than three times the production of Bennett in what for Max was a down season,
Unless it was really just an opening overture to serious discussions about Gaudreau or Monahan (or even Lindholm) it is just insulting
If I was Bergevin and I finally had this kind of trade opportunity's at his disposal, I would be looking for a #1LD over a forward. Top D's are hard to come by unless you can trade or draft them. We finally have the parts and cap space to pull off that kind of trade.
Forwards are more easily to get. So if Domi is the odd man out and is in play i would package our 1st round pick with Domi and finally try and land that top D.

I want useful additions as much as the next fan ... but I didn't want him signing Derek Brossard for $3.5 million last summer just because he had cap space available
Who said anything about that? Read the whole conversation first before you comment
I had said you don't need to hit a home run in free agency by signing the top player. you can spread it around and sign players that will add depth and produce.
That's why my question to Bergevin was why do you put all your eggs in one basket come free agency.

How do we know that he had no other plan, and no other UFAs or RFAs targeted?
Why do we have so much cap space? Because he didn't go after anyone else and then used the line we're going to let the kids play. That's how you know he didn't target anyone else.

In fairness, I think most teams do ... unless a team has tons of cap space and few players to add they have to focus on at most a couple of significant players as you are essentially offering the same "cap $$$" to more than one player ... have to be careful that you don't get an offer accepted by your "backup plan UFA" while your prime target is still deciding (all subject to your team feeling they have a legit chance at the "big fish") ... if you are talking about mid-range UFAs then if 2-3 players accept $4/5M offers you can always go over the cap in the "summer" and then move out the player(s) they are intended to replace ...
Well other gm's have a plan A,B,C,D if their top target doesn't sign with them and also have a time frame when to change direction to their next target if their 1st target takes too long to make a decision.
Bergevin doesn't do that
Vank--couldn't resign him , had no other plan
Markov/Radulov--couldn't resign them, no back up plan
Then use's the line we're going to play the kids but at that time no prospects in the system.
UFA targets
Trys to go all in for Johansen miss out , no other ufa's signed or targeted.
Trys to go all in for Tavares miss out, no other ufa's signed or targeted.
Trys a offer sheet for Aho doesn't work, no other target's.
We have had all this cap space now for what the last 5 years now?
You don't always need the home run ball, but a few key ufa's to add depth a scoring on each line is more impact full at times then that big fish.

What did you learn from the failure of your first five year window?
Would you be more aggressive with an offer sheet contract that you were with the Aho offer sheet, which was widely mocked as undervalue?
Under your direction, the team has failed to make the playoffs more often than not. How will you correct this, make the team a consistent playoff contender, if given the opportunity?
And then I get my press credentials revoked.
Your lucky their isn't any red button any more with those questions around here lol 😎

How about asking him why he puts all his eggs in one basket come free agency time 🤔

Agreed, If the Habs could land a top winger, e.g. Hall on free agency, we could move Tatar down to play with Danault and Lehkonen and that would be an excellent third line.
Drouin-Suzuki-Gallagher
Hall-Kotkaniemi-Armia
Tatar-Danault-Lehkonen
Byron-Evans-PoehllingOne can only dream
Why would you have Drouin on the top line? His done shit all since his been here.
If we can land hall which I think we won't heard talk he wants to play for his home town, the LW order should be
Hall
Tatar
Drouin
-
We're picking 16th, I would try and trade our first and a 2nd see what type of top LD we can get. They're some good forwards coming up in this year's UFA class. so if we can land a top LD through trade at the draft, then sign some forwards, we could be in good shape next season.
-
This playoff run hopefully has shown Bergevin that the retool is over and next step is to add depth to this team for next year. LW is week and D is week, those should be the focus in the off season.
-
This just shows we're not a deep team something you need for the playoffs. So I guess the question is are we still in retool? Or has this team shown enough to Bergevin that with added help and depth this team can make a run

I am giving up domi for the chance to sign Krug before anyone else which we could also give him a extra year (8 instead of 7) on a long-term max deal. and not end up in a bidding war to lose out last minute and end up missing out on a top D.
