Ok, you are going to have to give me a couple examples of GMs who are retooling through the draft, and making the playoffs consistently, while also being contenders..

Its not retooling its gm's that are able to keep their prospects pool strong at the same time being able to make trades and upgrades to their team, and be a consistent playoff team.

So if he traded away all our decent prospects and picks but made the playoffs for four years in a row (but lost in the first round every year) he’d be a better GM?

If this team was a playoff team every year and was a cup contender every year I will call him a good gm. Its not a matter of trading all our picks and prospects.

He goes all in on 1 player Every July 1st and if he doesn't get him , he has no plan b or c.  So he realize on a weak farm system full of  no NHL ready talent and bottom 6 caliber talent to be successful.

There's gm's in this league that manage to make the playoffs on a regular basis and still keep a good prospect pool and draft picks, also able to make trades to improve and upgrade theIr team.

So I am sorry but Bergevin has done nothing to me to show me he's been a good gm the past 8 years when it comes to the NHL club.

Has he done a good job on this reset yes he has. But that doesn't give him a pass on the last 8 years with this team sorry it doesn't.

I'm sure whatever happens Bergevin is the worst! Can I get a hell yeah?

He's the worst Until this team makes the playoffs on a regular basis. Sorry but regularly missing the playoffs doesn't give you the title of a good gm.

Considering he cleared waivers and went to Rochester... I'd say it won't happen.

That said, he's a UFA july 1st.  If they just want a body to play RD while Weber is hurt, there are worse options, but the salary is so big, I'd rather use our cap space to get an asset from a team in the race ala the Mason/Armia deal.

Oh I know but you know Bergevin.............

Because they are rebuilding and would get a lesser D with a struggling Domi. I know, I see that too.

I would do Domi, Kulak and Mete for Brodin and 1st if Brodin signs. It would solidify the CH's LD and give Romanov time to establish himself, sheltered by Chiarot, Brodin and Scandella. On RD we would be getting old with Weber and Petry, but Fleury and Brook would have time to develop.

But, I know that would be overpaying for a defensive LD and an unpriven 1st round pick 3-4 years away

Take out kulak and add Mete and a 2nd and maybe Minnesota takes it.

Brodin is one year away from UFA eligibility, Domi two.  It doesn't really make sense for Minnesota to part with a first-round pick to gain only one guaranteed year of team control.  Now, if Domi is amenable to an early extension, it makes more sense but with the year he's having, how willing is he going to be to sign long-term?  (I wouldn't be shocked if he opts for a one-year deal this summer in the hopes of restoring some value.)

The Habs keep saying they're not rebuilding so how much of an enticement is a first-rounder (likely protected considering Minnesota's current non-playoff status) to add basically a rental for next season?  (And how good is the insert name here guy?)  If they're parting with a core player in Domi, they probably want a core guy in return that's guaranteed to be around for a while.

If both Domi and Brodin are willing to sign long-term deals this summer, I could see a swap making some sense but if that happens, it's likely a 1-1 move or close to it at that time given the (likely) relatively equal team control.

Tampa Bay is believed to have been watching the Habs a lot lately.  I wonder if Thompson is who they're getting a look at, someone to shore up their faceoffs and penalty kill.

Could also be watching kovalchuk, they got  some injuries to their top scoring forwards. Could see kovalchuk as a fill in tell they get back.

I think the news that Weber was out for the rest of the year broke the club.

They have been trying hard all year to overcome the obstacles but that really sealed the deal and they are playing like it.

Its on Bergevin for not upgrading the D in the off season. Its the same team as last year, with the same weak D core as last year. Now  Weber is out and this group pretty much other than Petry is full of bottom 6th / 7th guys

Byron doesn't have that kind of value.

If we are going with Kovalchuk being a third, you are basically saying...

    Its saying Byron + 3rd = a 1st or a 2nd + prospect.

For a guy who hasn't even played in 3 months and was struggling before that?

    No one will do that.

    ---

also, league wide we have like 5 players in the last 15 traded at the deadline and then sign back to that team on July 1st.  Of those, almost all of them were with their team for a lot longer than 2 months.... so I think if you trade Kovalchuk, he's gone.  This isn't Plekanec where he had 15 years of loyalty to the organization.

Yeah but on a playoff team he adds vaule as a bottom 6 that can play on the PK. I think that big contract he got made him over think things and try to do more in order to live up to it. On a playoff team he can be himself.

But I see your point. If asking price for kovalchuk is now a 2nd round pick , just thought adding Byron could bring it up to a 1st.

Byron is the type of guy playoff team's love to add at the deadline.

The point here is that Kovalchuk's trade value appears to be a third-round pick, where as Domi (for example) would bring a much greater return. A third-rounder is not really going to help us much.

I would package Kovalchuk with Byron and try and get a 1st or a 2nd and a prospect.

This way if the team That trades for him can't resign him , they would still have Byron.

Plus we could always resign kovalchuk as a UFA July 1st.

This is just me and I'm only speculating here - but does anyone else get the feeling that Domi's teammates aren't all that particularly fond of him? I like Domi, nice player, but I'm just getting this feeling that there is something divisive in the dressing room and Domi could be at the root of it. I could be way off though... it's happened before.

Domi was fine here last year, whys this year different. If Bergevin is willing to trade domi its because he's agent is asking for too much money.

I was looking at a possibility of  packaging Kovalchuk with a pick of our own  to get an extra 1st pick somehow.

If we can keep kovalchuk I would look at packaging Byron with a 2nd and see what that could get you. If that could get you a upgrade on D I would do it or even a 1st round pick I would do it.

I was told the habs have 3 scoring lines

    When healthy.

    Tatar  / Danault  / Gallagher

    Drouin  / Domi  / Kovalchuk

    Lehkonen  / Suzuki  Armia

Next year when all are healthier Should be better that's if we re up kovalchuk.

    Byron  / Kotkaniemi  / Weal

Could be another good scoring line.

He may not be the same player he was during his prime but he is still the definition of a sniper.

There are articles all the way up to February 3rd, 2020 that use terminology such as “the Russian sniper” to describe him.

Yeah but he's not at the leave of Pastrnak right now 10 years ago yes, but now no.

Yes. Hopefully it's only this year.

At this pace, and especially without Weber, picking 15th is unlikely. Especially if Bergevin trades someone away, we'll be in the 8-12 range.

Mind you people picking 10-14 tend to win the draft lottery at move up to 3. So maybe we're in a good spot.

Havent you been arguing for the team to tank...

Now you want him to bring in a d rental for the 6 weeks weber is out?

    Wtf man.

Personally i think this seals the fate of the season as they arent going on an epic run without weber (and as much as i wanted it was unlikely with him).  Might as well be sellers, not buyers now.

Its too late now I don't see them getting a top 10 pick. We're just going to be picking at 15 again.

  16. They better not try and rush him back. Just rest him for next year.

Lets see if Bergevin actually makes a trade and brings in a replacement to help the D. Or is he not going to learn from not making a trade when Drouin went out, and just wait it out.
